🏯 Daily Life How cooked am I? Lost package

My mom sent me a surprise package from the USA, and its been MIA for 2 weeks.

I have a very large jewelry collection, most of which I left in the US when I moved to China. I haven't been back to the US since moving, but figured I would get it the next time I went back to visit. For my birthday, my mom sent me a package with all my jewelry through USPS. Didn't ask me, just did it. Tracking shows it arrived in China October 1st... and its just been sitting in customs, with no updates, for 2 weeks.

The thing is, that collection had a lot of gold, silver, precious stones, and heirlooms from my grandmother, great aunt and great grandmother. I can't get any updates about it from USPS, and my mother only had it insured for $200, when realistically its probably worth at least $3k, or more. What is the likelihood that I ever see my very valuable and sentimental collection of jewelry again?

🏯 Daily Life Have any foreigners successfully applied for a Chinese credit card?

My mother in law helped me ask CITIC and they told her I need 500k to 1m RMB in my account to get a credit card.

Is there another way? I cut my banking ties with my home country for tax / capital gains reasons and I’d like to use a get a new Mastercard.

I’m between HK and mainland and I need to spend lots of money per month for work which I mostly get reimbursed for, so I’d like to capitalize on the points.

🧳 Travel Gluten-free... any hope?

My parents will be visiting from the States in a few months. Step-mom is celiac (upset-stomach kind, not anaphylaxis.) From research, I have gathered the following:

  • this is gonna be tough
  • biggest contaminant risk is sauce thickeners
  • most of the trip, thankfully, will be in areas that bode well for finding clearly-labelled GF food and restaurants (Shanghai and Beijing)
  • allergen cards are a nice thought but can't be relied on

Tips/reccs/best practices/horror stories/etc. all welcome.

📱 Technology Can you follow people/see the feed in the Duolingo app in China?

I just downloaded Duolingo in China and soon figured out I can’t follow or be followed by anyone outside of China. But can you follow people within China? It looks like you need to put in their exact user name but even then the app doesn’t find anyone. Also I’m told there’s a button to see the feed of your friends achievements, but I can’t find it. Do you need friends before it appears? Or is the feed and following people just not a thing for mainland accounts?

📱 Technology Wireguard Configuration File

Hi! I am an American living in China and will be living here for the next two years, if not longer. Does anyone have experience with a WireGuard configuration file that actually connects to a wifi router? I want to play my PS5 and watch videos from it. I have a router (GL.iNet) that can take on a WireGuard file. I tried astrill China Supercharged 3-5 and those did not work, does anyone know of a wireguard file that does work?

Thanks!

🧳 Travel Bag Xiamen Airline

Hello,

I'm going to Cambodia for 7 days and Vietnam for 15 days in November. I'm flying with Xiamen Airlines. The carry-on size limit is 50x40x20.

I was planning to bring a 40L carry-on backpack—either the Decathlon Forclaz Backpack or the Osprey Farview—but they're too thick, especially the Decathlon one.

Do you know if any of these bags will work, or do you have any other recommendations? Otherwise, I think I’ll have to check a bag...

Thanks for your help

🧧 Payments Alipay flight ticket refund — how can I withdraw the money without a Chinese bank card?

I received a refund for a flight ticket into my Alipay account, but I can’t withdraw the money because I don’t have a Chinese bank card.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Is there a legitimate way to transfer the balance to an international bank account or get the money refunded through another method?

I’m not based in China, so getting a Chinese bank card isn’t really an option for me.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

📰 News Could someone help me download a 3D model from MakerWorld China?

Hi! I've been looking for a specific 3D printable mount for my GEPRC Vapor X5 drone, and I finally found exactly what I needed on MakerWorld China.

Unfortunately, I can't download it because the Chinese version requires an account, and I can't register without a Chinese phone number.

Would anyone with a MakerWorld China account be willing to download the STL or 3MF file for me?

I'd really appreciate the help. Thanks!

🏯 Daily Life Gifts from new Chineese friends how do I reciprocate?

Yesterday after playing badminton with some of my new friends we went out for dinner and drinks and I had trouble arranging a car for the next morning, and it was like an intercity 100 rmb on the green app 300 rmb on didi type car. He arranged one and this morning a very nice car comes to pick me up that I guarantee cost a bit of money. I am taking them to dinner on Saturday although he insists he treats me I'm planning on secretly getting the bill, but I don't know if I should send him a red packet on Whatsapp? He insisted on no repayment. He is also probably in his fourties and I am in my twenties if the age dynamic plays a role in the etiquette I should use.

Any insight appreciated, I hate being indebted to non banks but I don't want to seem transactional either.

¡Gracias!

💼 Work/Career Anyone worked at Financial Street Huize Kindergarten in Beijing?

Has anyone worked at Financial Street Huize Preschool Education (金融街惠泽幼儿园), particularly the Qianmen campus?

I received an offer for a foreign homeroom kindergarten teaching position, but so far cannot for the life of me find any information from current or former employees.

I’d be interested to hear about the management, workload, curriculum, work life balance, and overall experience. Any firsthand insight would be appreciated.

Just curious if anyone has any restaurant recommendations in Tianjin. Not necessarily just good food, but I'd be interested to know where I can find good authentic food representing the various cuisines of China. For example, is there an authentic Liaoning restaurant? Shanxi? Henan? etc etc

🪜 VPN Searching for expats willing to test my VPN service and get me feedback

I've set up a new vpn and I want some real feedback. Even if I'm in China, I know that VPN's sometimes stop working with different regions and different carriers, so I want some feedback to be able to develop a more reliable service in the future.

If you want to participate in a free test, please send me a DM and I will provide you with links and credentials (for free)

I specially want to get feedback, so if you just want a free VPN please don't contact me, there are plenty of other options!

Its a VPN using vless + hysteria2, with special servers with some premium routes to avoid congestion in peak hours (when normal VPN's start to fail)

Edit: Some context, since people are (rightly) skeptical. I’m a dev living near Beijing, and over the last few months I’ve had a lot of trouble with VPNs that actually work. I’ve used Mullvad and Astrill, but both struggle in peak hours, and Astrill is pretty expensive for me. So I built my own.

No email or personal info needed: you get a random account number, nothing else. I don’t log your traffic or browsing, only aggregate connection stats (does it connect, latency, which carrier/city) so I can see what works where. In return I’d ask for a short report: city, carrier (Mobile/Unicom/Telecom), time of day, works / doesn’t work.

💼 Work/Career Realities of teaching in China

I have a teaching degree and registration, which is helpful when finding work as a teacher.

A few years ago I moved to Japan to work as a teacher, something I’ve wanted to do since high school. The salary is really low, but the kids are really nice. Unfortunately my work environment is really toxic and exploitative. Naturally I started looking for work elsewhere. I hear good things about China. I don’t speak the language like I do japanese, and I’m not as fascinated by the culture and scenery, but there is lots of opportunity in china and the currency seems way more stable and profitable

Perhaps it’s clear that my head is spinning with pros and cons and indecision. I’ve been in Japan for over two years and I really do like it here, I’m just terrified that if (keyword IF) I find a new job here in Japan that isn’t toxic or exploitative, then the yen will depreciate so much I become trapped here

My questions boil down to this: is life in china worth it? What salary should I be aiming for? How much time off each yeah should teachers be getting? What is the reality of living behind the Great Firewall? What is the dating culture like there (I hate being single but Japan can have a challenging dating culture I’ll be honest)

🛂 Immigration Relocating from the UK

I am finally making the move at the end of this year.

I need some advice for relocating from the UK to China.

Could someone with experience please give me some pointers?

1) When you left UK, which platform did you find with most success for getting rid of your second hand items before leaving the UK? Currently I am thinking of using Facebook marketplace and Nextdoor.

2) Which International moving service did you use? Currently I am thinking of using Seven Seas, and wondering what others might have used.
