Discussion 5 opening traps that catch Indian beginners all the time (and how to avoid each one)

Following up on yesterday's Ravan post: today's head is "Chhal" (deceit), a bot that only plays opening traps. While building it I collected the traps that catch club players most. Here they are with the escape for each:

1. Scholar's Mate

1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 Nc6 3.Qh5 Nf6?? 4.Qxf7#

✅ Escape: 3...g6 or 3...Qe7 defends. Never leave f7 guarded only by the king when a queen and bishop are both aiming at it.

2. Legal's Mate

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d6 3.Bc4 Bg4 4.Nc3 g6? 5.Nxe5! Bxd1?? 6.Bxf7+ Ke7 7.Nd5#

✅ Escape: don't take the queen. 5...dxe5 loses a pawn but survives. When your opponent "blunders" their queen, ask why.

3. Fried Liver

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5 Nxd5?! 6.Nxf7! Kxf7 7.Qf3+, and Black's king is dragged into the open

✅ Escape: 5...Na5 is the main line and avoids it.

4. Blackburne Shilling Gambit

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nd4!? 4.Nxe5? Qg5 5.Nxf7?? Qxg2 6.Rf1 Qxe4+ 7.Be2 Nf3#

✅ Escape: 4.Nxd4 or simply 4.O-O. Greedy 4.Nxe5 is exactly what Black wants.

5. Englund Gambit trap

1.d4 e5 2.dxe5 Nc6 3.Nf3 Qe7 4.Bf4? Qb4+ 5.Bd2 Qxb2 6.Bc3?? Bb4! 7.Qd2 Bxc3 8.Qxc3 Qc1#

✅ Escape: 6.Nc3 holds. Under pressure, develop pieces rather than chasing the queen.

The common thread: f7/f2 is the weakest square early on, and a "free" piece in the opening is usually bait.

Which trap got you when you started? Mine was the Fried Liver, in a school tournament 😅

(P.S. the trap bot is Head 5 of the Navratri challenge from yesterday. Link in the comments if anyone wants to try it.)

Variant Chess Will chess always just be 1v1? I spent over a year building a 4v4 team variant showcase

Hello guys. Introducing you Olympiad Chess, a team-versus-team chess variant designed for up to 4v4 (8 players max) in a single match.

Steam link: [Link]

Free Demo: [Link]

This project is the result of a year long commitment to answer a question I kept asking myself while watching events like the Chess EWC 2025 (Unfortunately, I was very busy this time around I wasn't able to focus on it this year) and the FIDE Olympiad: Will chess forever just be a 1v1 game?

Most multiplayer chess variants run into two major issues when they add more players:

  1. Boredom: Waiting for players to move in a slow, circular order quite honestly takes forever.
  2. Chaos: Distorted board shapes, weird angles, or random mechanics ruin the core identity of classical chess.

I, on the other hand, followed one simple rule from day one: keep the identity of chess intact.

How it Works:

  1. Synchronized Team Turns: No matter how many players are in the match, turn order is strictly Team White moves, then Team Black moves, and so on. Instead of waiting through a slow turn order, all teammates coordinate and make their moves freely during their team's turn. This keeps the pacing fast and rhythmic, just like classical 1v1 chess.
  2. No Distorted Boards (Instead, it's a Shared Central corridor): You won't have to relearn anything, such as circular or cross shaped board layouts. Instead, standard 8x8 boards sit side by side. The middle ranks (ranks 4 and 5) act as a single, shared corridor connecting every active board in the match.
  3. Cross-Board Dynamics: You can advance your pieces into ranks 4 and 5 to assert control over the central lanes, slip across into an adjacent board to attack an opponent where they are weakest, or rush over to reinforce a teammate who is getting squeezed.

The game uses standard classical piece movements and rules, pure calculation, no rng, no cards, and no stat gimmicks., It's just chess, basically.

You can find the full breakdown of the rules and detailed guides on the Steam Community hub here: [Rulebook]

I'd love to hear some feedback on the concept at least! But please visit the store page, or check out the demo if you're interested!

News Made a Navratri chess challenge for Indian players: beat Ravan's 10 heads before Dussehra

Full disclosure, I'm the founder of nearChess, a chess platform for Indian players. For Navratri I built something I think this sub will enjoy.

Kehte hain chess Ravan ke mahal mein paida hua, and that Mandodari beat him at his own game. (Historians say chaturanga appeared around the 6th century, but the legend is too good.) So: Ravan's 10 heads are 10 chess bots, each one a classic mistake:

  1. Lobh (greed): grabs every free pawn

  2. Krodh (anger): reckless attacker

  3. Moh (attachment): never trades

  4. Matsar (jealousy): copies every move you make

  5. Chhal (deceit): opening traps only

  6. Jaldbaazi (haste): 1+0 bullet against the bot

  7. Asatya (untruth): puzzle rush with fake sacrifices

  8. Swarth (selfishness): convert a winning endgame

  9. Bhay (fear): break a fortress

  10. Ahankar (ego): the boss, on Dussehra

One head unlocks per day, earlier ones stay open, and everyone who beats all 10 gets their name on a live Ravan Dahan on 20 October. Free, runs in the browser.

Curious which head gets people the most. My bet is the mirror bot.

FIDE's expected-score table overstates rating gaps by about 20%. I tested it on 1.5 million classical games.
