Current Events The new White House Press Secretary says she's a lawyer. Er, really? No bar in America lists her. In Florida, claiming you're a lawyer without a license is a felony, so I filed.
Kate Sharon Zacharia, aka Katie, graduated from Pepperdine Law. She has a JD, if you will. But a Juris Doctor is a degree, and a degree doesn't make you a lawyer, an attorney, or anyone's general counsel.
Those take a license, and Katie comes up short in that department. California's State Bar told CNN it has no record of her, and Popular Information searched all 50 states plus D.C. and came up empty. I dug through The Florida Bar's directory and found nothing either.
No worries, says Katie. She passed the bar "when I moved to China."
It's Chyna, dearie. That's the accepted pronunciation in your orange-tinted tribe.
Editor's Note: Sorry, it's Jyyyna.
Down here in the Sunshine State, Zacharia has worked as "general counsel" for Trump Media, which is headquartered in Sarasota. Under Florida Statute 454.23, holding yourself out as qualified to practice law here without a license is a third-degree felony. It's called the Unlicensed Practice of Law, or UPL, so I dashed off a 22-page complaint to The Florida Bar, plus one to California, where similar shenanigans went on.
This being Reddit, the trolls will chime in: "Who's this Chudley guy, and what does he know?"
Well, unlike Ms. Katie, I don't claim to be a lawyer, and I don't hand out legal advice. I file paperwork, and I do it really well. Those of you familiar with my work can vouch for that.
Last year I sent six UPL complaints to the Bar's Tampa office, the same office that will look at Zacharia. All six were accepted and investigated, and they're now before the local UPL committee. I know how this process works.
The Bar makes the call. I just hand them the record.
