We are posting these here as Reddit rules have a fairly small character limit and we want to ensure that there is as little room for misunderstanding as possible!
Being civil: Please do not engage in condescending, rude, or aggressive behaviors. We can play nice even when disagreeing with someone. Please try to refrain from swearing too much on the sub. No personal attacks, harassment, or insulting others will be tolerated. You will receive one warning, then a temporary ban. If you violate this rule a third time you will be permanently banned. Mods are able to use their discretion on this if an individual's behavior may warrant immediate and potentially permanent banning or muting without a warning prior. Please don't make us have to resort to that.
If you have a complaint about a specific food/brand/etc., that is fine, but please stick to constructive criticisms.
Example: ✅️ I don't like this food for my cat/s because _________ VS. ❌ That food is trash. ✨️ Speaking to others this way will not make them want to engage with you or our sub. Please keep things informative. Yes, some foods will be better than others overall, or for some cats more than others, but please remember that fed is best and we need to feed the cat in front of us. ✨️
Everyone has different resources and access to different foods. Everyone's cat is different. Recommendations are great, suggesting that someone is taking poor care of their cat because they are doing their best is not. The only wrong diets are ones that are nutritionally incomplete, food that has gone bad, and food not meant for cats.
Please, no medical advice. Even if you are a licensed professional, it is not possible to diagnose someone's cat over Reddit. Broad guidelines are fine such as males being more prone to urinary blockages. However it is not okay to offer absolute advice for a specific cat, such as "your cat should be eating x amount of (specific) food x times a day".
If you are a veterinary professional or otherwise who believes someone needs medical advice, the best advice is for them to see a vet. You may bring up potential concerns and suggest they go see a vet, but do not diagnose these cats over Reddit.
No spam: This should be obvious, but additionally please do not bog down the sub with loads of "what should I feed my cat" posts. Please provide any relevant information with a post like this so that you can receive better advice and insights, such as your cat's age and if you've noticed any food preferences. Posting links with little to no context is also considered spam.
YouTube, TikTok, personal blogs, etc. are not reliable sources of information. Please refrain from using things like these as a source unless you can prove it was made by or cites a veterinary professional, however please try to use other ways of sourcing your information if able. Many people have advice online and can claim any amount of experience, make a profile that says they are certified without proof, etc.
And lastly, please remember that this is a place to discuss personal experiences. Please be respectful to anyone sharing their experiences with feeding their cat(s).
Thank you for taking the time to read this, I know it was long! Thank you for helping to keep our sub a helpful, informative, safe, and friendly place!

i bought this food last night. i just went to go feed my cats this food and the first half of the package smelled and looked fine. i went to go give my cat the second portion and it came out looking like this. i have a terrible sense of smell but the smell that this portion produced actually managed to make me run to the toilet and vomit. i have never smelled something that horrendous in my life and i can’t even get it out of the air in my apartment. i am so disgusted and can’t believe i almost fed my cats this garbage. it’s not expired until 2028 and the package wasn’t punctured anywhere

3 of my cats have been eating this for a couple of years, and I just opened a bag I bought a week ago and they are refusing to eat it! The bag looks the same, and unfortunately I no longer have the old bag to compare ingredients. But it's pretty obvious something has changed, since they ate the previous bag like clockwork and now neither one of them wants to touch it!
I am getting very desperate here. Everything I've been feeding them (which had been found through very expensive trial and error!) has changed formulas. They had settled for this Hill's kibble, Farmina kibble (which from what I understand has also changed recipes), and 2 types of Royal Canin canned food. Now they reject the Royal Canin canned food, the Hill's, there's only Farmina dry food left, for as long as they'll eat it. Then what? I have tried everything under the sun and they don't even recognize it as food!
Has anyone noticed their cats no longer eating their Hill's Science Diet kibble?

recently got some ziwi lamb cat food from amazon. is it supposed to smell this pungent, and have red residue all over the top. I put some back in thats why its so deformed, but it has this top layer of slimy stuff as well, as seen in the picture. and the pate is brown and red. sorry if this is a stupid question

Okay so, yesterday we went to get tartar clean up and guess what? My poor angel had 7 of her little needles out 😥. And that's actually the good part about her health but... I have to give her her pain meds in few hours but she didn't eat almost anything, she licked a bit of Hill's recovery pate but way too little. She has to eat something because this medication is known to upset stomach and will just make her throw up if it's empty. I'm scared to give her her regular wet food because it could get trapped in the holes between stitches and cause infection...

10 year old cat, had an ultrasound they said its IBS, inflammed GI trak. They prescribed hills z/d. She doesnt like the wet version, so giving her the dry. They just started a steroid but she is still having loose stool. She enjoys eating wet food, i'm giving her fancy feast. What can be done about the diarrhea? Unless it takes some time for the steroid to work? Its only been 4 days. Any help will be appreciated. Is it bad to be giving her the fancy feast in addition to the prescription dry food?

i have two cats, both 5 years old. one of my cats is missing half of his teeth after suffering severe injuries before he was brought to the shelter, so i just opt to soften both their kibble with a bit of warm water for a few minutes before feeding it to them. i give them each 1/4 cup of kibble in the morning and another 1/4 cup of kibble in the evening. in the evening i also give them each 1.5 OZ (half a small can) each of wet food. i have been feeding them hills science diet for kibble and i’ve trialed various canned wet foods but i get so many different answers online and even my vet isn’t super helpful about information…. just stated that any is fine. i have gone to different pet stores and recently i bought these - almo nature, apparently they are “complete” meals as opposed to just hydrating food, they seem to really enjoy the one i’ve fed them so far (mackerel and sweet potato). but they are PRICEY, im willing to pay it if it means they are getting the best quality but i also don’t want to break the bank if it’s not necessary. any info on best combination of wet and kibble would be appreciated ❤️ they are both healthy boys, just on the bigger side LOL, my one cat has some anxiety but they are happy and not picky eaters.

I need advice on what to feed my kitty girl while we wait for my husband's next unemployment check. We currently have EBT so we can get stuff like sardines (without salt) for the time being, but I know that cats need preoper supplements and such if you're going to be making their food. Supplements I can't afford at the time being.
I'm a SAHM and my husband recently lost his job and we've been okay with cat food until recently due to our other cat passing away from lymphoma and having to pay vet bills and then for his cremation and such. It'll only be for a week at most as we just got all our bills in order for the month but are short on money for any kind of proper cat food.
I'm hoping to get some advice on things we can buy with EBT to keep her sustained for the time being without upsetting her tummy or leaving her too high and dry on proper nutrients. Any ideas would be of a great help. Thank you.

**Solved - folks commented correct answer as well. Vet finally got back to me and I accidentally selected the non-fiber version however they admitted they should have caught it before they approved it. They gave me a refund on the big bag and they gave me ~60% discount to buy a smaller bag of the correct food due to their mistake - unfortunately the fiber response is not avail in the big bag. I have to say Royal Canin really should differentiate these two, I just searched for Gastrointestinal S/O not realizing there were two versions in nearly identical looking bags but at least now I know. Vet said the cats may have some digestive upset with the "new" food and to just go ahead and mix them until the wrong food is gone or just trash it.
Switched my cats to Royal Canin GI S/O due to vomiting and possibly allergies on their prior food. Has been an amazing month with the vomiting stopping and their skin things clearing up. It is expensive stuff so was just going to the vet or Petsmart to buy the small bags initially - well decided to buy a big 16lb bag through the vet and it is entirely different food. This is prescription food so it is validated before purchase, I thought I was going crazy so I double checked the big bag and yup it’s the right thing.
Obviously these are wildly different foods despite being the same prescription. I am beyond pissed and just have to go with it because I’m going out of town overnight and have no other option at the moment. Calling the vet when they open today to see what the deal is. Top of photo is what i have been getting in the small bags, lower is what was in the large bag.
Sorry for the vent but cat mama is big mad while trying to pack and get ready for an overnight trip.

After watching countless videos on YT of Chinese people rescuing stray cats and preparing homemade meals for their new furbabies, I want to compile a small recipe book of delicious homemade cat dishes for myself. Not as part of their regular diet, of course, as they're just fine on both dry and wet food. But rather for special occasions like holidays or their birthdays, as an occasional treat.
Easier said than done, as any time I try to search for myself I keep finding pages that are like "when preparing homemade cat recipes, it's important to consider blah blah blah". Which doesn't really help me since I'm not implementing homemade dishes as part of their regular diet, just as a special occasion feast. Any of you have recipes of your own to share or know where I can go directly to get recipes easily?

Hello,
As the title suggests I'm looking for more enriching ways to feed my cats.
One of them in particular has a high prey drive but as he's moved from kittenhood to adulthood has lost interest in toys. I think they are bored and I struggle to get them to play. We have all sorts of different toys and sometimes the mood will strike and they'll play but most days it's just me throwing cat toys and waving feathers and fishing rod toys and they just look at me like I'm an idiot.
As far as feeding enrichment goes, so far I've tried:
\* Lick mats for their wet food, which are fine for both of them
\* a few treat puzzles, one flat with moving pieces and one is a ball that deposits the dry food or treats as it rolls (The challenge with the treat puzzles is the older cat is so quick with them and has them all figured out that the younger cat doesn't get a look in. The older cat is slightly overweight and I'm also trying to make things more challenging for him so that he's not eating the majority of the food. 😂)
\* leaving little piles of their dry food around the home for them to find
I suppose it's especially for their wet food mealtimes I'm looking for ideas. Also if anyone has any tips for encouraging play beyond catnip/valerian they would be welcomed.

I hated the pouches at first, scraping around the bottom fold. Then realized just push the bottom flat, yeah, I'm all grown up now. Later, my cat refused all her food. Someone on Reddit posted about Weruva BFF broth, Thank you, anonymous poster ! Five the first day.... Now, if I could respond to the Amazon customer who downvoted the food their cat LOVES for the crease in the pouch to help them I could sleep in peace.

i just fed my kitten one of these and she adored it and then IMMEDIATELY vomited. is she going to be okay? i realize i should’ve slowly introduced it. she’s running around and being a demon as per usual. she’s 10 weeks old.

Since the 6-month-old kitten decided to stop all soft food, I’m meaning even broth with “floaters” (pieces, shreds, whatever you want to call it) of meat, I’m having a hard time finding anything anywhere that is plain broth.
No salt. No meat. No artificial flavors. No artificial colors. No grain. No onion. No garlic. No … that cats aren’t supposed to have.
Just all natural broth.
Does anyone know of any and where I can find it?
Thanks!
PS - it will be used as a side dish to her hard kibble. For added moisture and protein.

Hello everyone!
VetLife recently developed tube treats for cats on a hydrolyzed protein diet, called VetLife Derma HF Creamy Treats. I’ve been waiting for them to become available, and today was supposed to be the release date. However, they’re now showing as unavailable.
Does anyone know why they’re unavailable or if there’s been a delay in the release? I tried contacting VetLife support, but they’re currently unavailable.
I was really looking forward to getting these for my cat, so I’m wondering if anyone has heard anything or knows what’s going on.
Thank you!
EDIT:
They just became in stock as of 10-15 3:46pm EST.
SECOND EDIT:
My vet said the treat is not fully hydrolyzed, and the other ingredients could interfere with my cat’s elimination diet trial. Check with your vet before ordering.

We took a trip to the vet today and now I’ll be feeding them two separate foods. One will be on a prescription diet food, while the other will be free feeding on senior food. Does anyone have any advice as to how I can make this work? They’ve both been free feeding the same food until now. Neither of them do well with collars, and the underweight one is very anxious about food so I’m not sure a timed feeder or one that opens with a chip in the collar would help. Any advice welcome, and sorry if this is not the right place to ask!

I currently have covid and haven't been able to get out and do instacart. I ran out of cat food this morning and roommate isn't going to be home tonight and potentially most of tomorrow.
I have access to dry dog food as well as wet dog food. Will this be okay for them short term? I'm hoping by Saturday, covid is out of my system so I can get working again

We are currently trying to mix a wet food with our 2 years old female cat. She is actually not a lover of it since she prefers dry food instead.
Do you have any recommendations of what brand/s can we try for her?
r/catfood • u/Illumeis • 15h ago
It was in another dry turkey can. Please tell me this is skin because I've already called about the improper packing causing two cans to lose their seals and be unusable(they put no padding in the boxes, worse than chewy because they packed them in LARGE boxes causing them to get thrown around in the box), carb content due to the cans saying one thing and the faq saying a number that seems incorrect(ongoing they are getting back to me most likely Monday), and trying to see why my last box still hasn't shipped. Apparently they ran out of chicken kitten in most stores According to the lady on the phone.
Now I'm HOPING this is turkey skin. Y'all think it's skin? Looks and feels like wet paper or thin cardboard
