Benching Leonard

Despite Leonard’s two points on the day, Carbs said he did not give Leonard a shift for the rest of the third period after his 7:39 slashing penalty. Said we can’t take that frustration penalty. I checked the shift chart and that is true; he appears not to have played until after the ENG.

I like it. Take a stand. Withholding PT for a bad penalty even on a great offensive day sends a message the players will hear. And I trust Carbs will keep teaching Leno and building a relationship.

He didn't bench Chychrun or Sourdif for stupid penalties. And Chychrun has been committing a LOT of stupid penalties.

Chychy is just not a good defender. Most of his penalties are tripping or hooking but trying to do the right thing (and partly a function of having to play 24 minutes with our depleted D corps). I think it is fair to reserve punishment for egregious and selfish retaliation.

I did not like it, he was playing great - I understand sending a message, but I’d rather win the game against the defending champs in their house. Game was 2-2 when he took that slashing call and we killed the power play with 10 min left to go in the game. You can make the argument that Leno could have helped us win that game with how well he was playing.

This is short sighted imo - One loss this early in the season does not matter that much. Instilling mentality does

What? A loss is a loss no matter when it happens.

You're missing my point. One loss at this stage isnt going to derail the entire season. Losing control of your young players will.

It's not missing the point; you both have legitimate points. A loss matters the same no matter the point in the season, however, it's better to make correction efforts earlier.

And losing drives the message home even more.

I mean Sourdif lost the game with his penalty. Leno did not. If Carberry wants to bench one of our only talented players then go for it. Let’s lose.

Sourdif’s penalty was accidental in the defensive zone on a play that arguably should have been whistled for icing.

Leonard’s penalty was a selfish retaliatory slash in the offensive zone. Penalties happen but with rare exceptions, there is no excuse for committing an offensive zone penalty.

The difference is one was a penalty out of frustration and the other unintentional

I disagree. Carbs said the Canes player was off balance and the Sourdif penalty should not have been called, but regardless that was an effort penalty. Leonard’s slashing penalty was just taking an undisciplined shot at an opponent; selfish and foolish when we were tied up in the third. A coach has to drive out that bad habit even if it costs us a game.

If we’re in January I agree with you.

He needs to button up until fundamentals and frustration management or we will lose every game.

I actually think the opposite

It’s better to do this now than actually doing it in January, get this undisciplined penalty and punishment out of the way now, literally in the season

taking an undisciplined shot, getting away with it and then going back for more*

You must be an Alexander Semin fan.

It seems weird to start enforcing that on Leonard when you never did that to Ovechkin despite countless bad giveaways over the years. Accountability is great, but it shouldn't just be on McIlrath and Leonard.  There has to be a team standard and everyone needs to be held accountable for it.  Nobody should be exempt. Hopefully we see more of it going forward.

I don't think a bad giveaway is the same as intentionally slashing a guy out of frustration

Bad giveaways are different than frustration penalties. Additionally, its Ovi. He's got 76 games left in his regular season career. Ryan Leonard barely has 76 in his career total. One you can instill values, the other you work with. He plays with an edge but that doesn't mean its okay to take bad penalties. He needs to learn the line, and consequences for crossing it will help make that clear to him.

I think at a certain point we can look at what Carbs has done with so many players and say that he knows what he is doing.

I agree with this take 100%, Ovi has had countless turnovers in crunch time situations that have hurt the team, yet he’s still out there when we pull the goalie with 2 mins left. I’d much rather have Leonard out there with the goalie pulled than Ovi at this point.

Let's face it, Ovi is treated differently. If he was treated the same, we would be having a serious discussion about Ovi seeing Nacho Duty as some of analytics are starting to point out

I don't think we should panic and go nuts but few fans and even Capitals Front Office want to point out very massive problem.

Yikes. He seemed okay-enough last season, but this is... yikes. Hopefully he figures something out...

This.

Coach Carbs was on the Sports Junkies at 7 AM today and addressed penalties.

Those guys are still at it?? I remember listening to them through my boombox as a 14 year old in MoCo. I’m on the other side of 40 now.

They are celebrating their 30 year anniversary this year.

The refs were especially bad last night, that’s for sure. I have no idea how Protas’ goal got disallowed but the Canes’ was a goal.

If there’s one thing I hated it was the coaching last night. Our line combos were terrible, our PP was embarrassing, our PK on the sourdif penalty was awful. Kyrou barely was on the ice, Leno got benched, sourdif cost us the game. Not to mention Ovi is useless on the ice. He’s like a beer leaguer who dumps or passes as soon as he gets the puck. We need better line combos, and those lines need more ice time.

love that carbs sat him after the slash even with two points already. soft discipline is how bad habits stick. if leno knows a dumb penalty costs him the rest of the night hell think twice next time, points or not

Crapbery won't bench a vet when he is playing lousy, but staples offense to the bench. Wish the Caps had Jon Cooper!

1

u/DeformedArthurRegion 1d ago

Jon Cooper also wouldn't bench Ovi dude.

u/Maximum_Anteater_806 1d ago

Carbery’s boss wants Ovi to play. The players are pretty devoted to Ovi, and Ovi accepts a reduced role, but only to a point. Ovi right now thinks he is rounding into form after a shortened training, camp and an injury. I would like to see fewer 5 v 5 minutes especially with his linemate Ilya struggling. Maybe we will see that if the underperformance continues. But right now Carbery is playing the hand he is dealt.
