Looking for advice on a lens I’m looking for Astro

Hey guys, I’m reinvesting into photography, I used to shoot on a t6i a loooong time ago. Loved it. Recently I got pulled back into this hobby. I made the jump to mirrorless and went with the r6miii I have some older ef lenses from my dslr days. But I want to get back specifically into astrophotography, any thoughts on going with the 16-35, 2.8 II USM?? I know I’m able to use it for other applications like landscaping and I do like that too. I guess to not make this any longer, anyone have experience with this lens in the Astro world??? Any advice/ recommendations are and will be greatly appreciated!!!

Gear Buying Advice Why Canon over Sony? Help me choose

Almost everyone I know has been recommending Sony to me, but I’d like to hear your opinions on Canon.

I recently started a marketing agency in India and am looking to invest in a hybrid camera for our content production.

Currently, around 90% of our work is video and 10% is photography. As we grow, we may take on more photography projects, so I’m looking for a reliable hybrid camera.

My maximum budget is INR 2.2 lakh ($2,322) for the camera body, and I can spend around INR 1 lakh ($1,055) on a lens for now.

Here are the prices I found in India:
Sony A7 V — $2,350
Canon R6 V — $2,000
Canon R6 Mark III — $2,300
Nikon Z6 III — $1,790
Nikon ZR — $1,580

Almost everyone recommends Sony because of its autofocus and lens ecosystem. For example, I can get the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 for around $1,000 which fits my budget.

However, I really like the R6 V and R6 Mark III, but I’m open to other Canon camera suggestions too.

Are there any affordable non-L-series lenses that offer good image quality and value? Can you convince me to choose Canon over Sony and suggest a good lens within my budget?

Canon R6 Mark II vs Sony A7 IV vs A7C II — Best Used Setup for Street Photography and Portraits?

Hi everyone!

I currently own a Canon R7 with an EF 24–70mm f/2.8L II USM lens, using an adapter.

I mainly shoot street photography and portraits, and I'm considering upgrading to a full-frame camera. I'm deciding between the Canon R6 Mark II, and the Sony A7C II, all on the used market.

My priorities are:

  • Good image quality and low-light performance.
  • Reliable autofocus for portraits and street photography.
  • A lightweight, compact setup that's comfortable to carry around.
  • A fast lens suitable for portraits, preferably around 50mm and f/1.4–f/1.8.

I'm open to switching to Sony if the overall system better suits my needs.

Budget: Maximum US$2,000 for the camera body and one lens combined.

Experience level: I've been using the Canon R7 for street photography and portraits, and I'm looking to upgrade to a full-frame system.

An important requirement: Third-party lens compatibility is a major factor in my decision. Canon and Sony's original-brand lenses are often beyond my budget, so I want a camera system with a good selection of affordable third-party autofocus lenses, especially from Sigma and Tamron.

For those who have used these cameras, which would you recommend, and why? Would you keep the Canon system or switch to Sony?

I'd appreciate advice based on real-world use, especially regarding image quality, autofocus, portability, and lens options. Thank you!

T6 Rebel Single Shot In Focus Mode

Post image

Hey folks, got an odd issue I can’t find online here. My t6 won’t shoot more than a single shot if it’s not in live mode. I have all of the appropriate settings, have tried different lenses and cards but nothing has fixed it. Fully functional in live shooting though. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Objectif Canon 24-105 ou 28-70

Bonjour a tous,

What is the correct AF method for tracking running shoes - R5 Mk ii

Post image
57 Upvotes

I'm looking for the best AF method to track running shoes. I have a shoot where a runner is coming into frame but I only want it to focus on their shoe. The end frame is quite wide with the whole runner in frame but I want to focus only on the shoe. Outside of turning subject detection off, is there a method that would help me on this?

New to me body, this is the lens I have.

I'm a printer, but I've recently picked up taking pictures myself. Been using a very old eos 50d, picked this eos 7d up on a whim because it's pretty similar and I like my 50d. It's basically new and the layout and feel is nice plus kinda familiar. Less than 8k clicks. I'd like to pick up 2 lens, one for general use and one for birds. For birds, I want something like a Sigma 600 or something I think. I have no idea what a good general lens is though that's lighter and smaller than the efs 18-200 I have now. I'm printing on a Canon 2100. I'm a noob at taking my own pictures and my budget is limited to not crazy. Figure I'll try to rent before I buy on telephoto for birds... but is less than 600 bucks crazy? General use lens budget is maybe less than 200? Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Gear Buying Advice Pancake lenses for Canon?

I've been using Canon for years now: T5i, SL2, M50 and R8

This will be the first time I'm going on a trip with the R8 and I'm wondering if there's any other pancake lens besides the 28mm RF. It serves me pretty well but I like variety

I was thinking about something a bit wider, or maybe some good vintage glass? I have the EF adapter so it's also an option

Either way, any tips for photo traveling?

Gear Buying Advice Canon RF wide angle lens recommendations

Hey,

I’m experiencing decision fatigue for various reasons and I might need some advice. I currently own the Canon RF 50mm 1.2 aswell as the 85mm 1.2 and both produce absolutely gorgeous photos and im very happy with them. I’m still in need of a wide angle lens. I’ve previously owned a sigma 35mm 1.4(back when I used Nikon DSLR so I don’t have it anymore) and while it was nice I always felt there wasn’t enough difference for me between 35-50. I also tested and tried a 24mm and 28mm (Sigma Art back then). There I felt 24 was a bit too wide for me and 28 kinda hit the sweet spot. I also tried the canon rf 24-70mm 2.8 and therefore shot on a zoom lens actively for the first time and really enjoyed the versatility that it gave me yet I sometimes wish I could’ve gone down more in aperture especially in low light situations.

So now my real issue is do I go for a 15-35mm 2.8 to get a variety of focal length or is it just too extreme for someone who only shoots people (portrait, fashion, fantasy)?
Or do I go for a prime but then I’d have to decide between 24 or 35mm since the 28mm one only comes as an entry lens and reviews have not blown me away.
OR do I go absolute ham and get the 28-70mm 2.0 which probably would be want I wanted and would give me the flexibility to use mostly one lens and be able to not have to log around 3 heavy lenses at once but with the fear that it will kinda make my prime lenses obsolete ?

I love shooting wide open with bokeh but I need a wide angle for tighter spaces or more dynamic shots.
And I feel like I’ve made the “mistake” of buying high end lenses at the start so now everything lower feels like it’s not “good enough”. (Truly a first world problem)
I’m doing photography both partly pro and partly for hobby reasons.

Do you have any recommendation what you would do or any other lenses that are worth considering that I haven’t mentioned?

Help me chose the right one

Hi there! Looking at a new camera to learn manual on that has great image quality even using auto focus. Also would like to get a lens for sports photos from a distance. Looking at the T7I. Any other budget friendly options out there? Someone told me to get a mirrorless, but I don’t think I want to spend that much. What about the 80D?

Gear Buying Advice Canon R50: EF Lenses with an Adapter or RF Lenses?

Hi everyone! I’ve always wanted to get into photography, and I recently bought the Canon R50!

I’m still learning about lenses and noticed that there are quite a few EF lenses available on the used market for much cheaper than RF lenses. I know I can use an EF lens on the R50 with an adapter, but I’m wondering if it’s worth going that route as a beginner or if I’d be better off saving up for RF lenses.

I’m mainly interested in taking photos of my dogs, family, and friends, with some nature photography as well. Since I’m just starting out, I’m hoping to keep costs reasonable while still getting good-quality photos.

For those of you who use the R50, would you recommend buying an adapter and exploring EF lenses, or investing in RF lenses instead? I’d love to hear your experiences and recommendations.

Gear Buying Advice Photographing a 5k - new Sigma 50-120?

Hello all! I’m brand new to this hobby, having a ton of fun, and looking to get some experience- I figure i have to start somewhere, so I’m planning to volunteer to shoot a local 5k race (hopefully I won’t be the only one! I’ll be very clear with them that i’m just starting out).

I have:
Canon eos r100.
Canon rf s 18-150 f3.5-6.3
Canon 50 f1.8

I don’t think my zoom lens will allow for the low iso, high-shutter speed and subject isolation i’m looking for at f6.3.

My question - would the new sigma 50-120 f2.8 be the best lens for this event? It seems perfect. Or would the tamron 17-70 be better?

Also - any other advice for something like this? I know my way around the camera pretty well (have taken >1000 pics of family and vacation).  Planning to shoot jpegs and make sure i’ve got a spot where runners are facing the light with background far behind.

Open to any advice folks have! Thanks all.

Tech Help Marks / Dust in EVF - R6 MKII

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I’ve just moved from Lumix to Canon 🙌🏻 I bought a used R6 MKII from WEX Photo and Video graded 8 out of 9+.

I noticed these marks (pictured) in the evf - is this worth sending back for? I got the camera for £1,136 - which is the max of my budget. So snapped up the price given used are at least £1,400+

I’ve checked the sensor, it’s not that. I’ve check the lens, it’s not that. The marks don’t show on the LCD or images. I’ve cleaned the front glass of the EVF.

Any wisdom please would be great, I don’t want to return it unless I have to as the rest of the camera is mint condition apart from this and has a low shutter count.

Do you think future Canon full frame cameras will get smaller?

I moved from a 70d to an r8. I am very happy with the size. I don’t need ibis or 2 card slots or a bigger battery. But thinking about the future- I have no desire for an R8 mark ii or iii if they continue the same style as the ii. So the next option is to just get an R6 which is even bigger.

Is there any chance they make a small full frame again in say 5 years?

Bit of advice in preparation for a safari please, r7 (80d and lenses chat)

Hi, little bit of context. I have been in and out of photography in phases. I have a canon SLR from years ago and followed that with a 400d for which I have a few lenses, the only things worth keeping are a 50mm prime 1.4 and tamron 17-50 2.8. I haven't been doing anything for the last decade I guess.

I have just bought a used but very nice condition 80d to get my skills dialed back in (it is amazing how much you forget). It is great although I haven't gone far beyond familiarisation yet. I am using that with the above 2 lenses.

I am going on a Kenya safari next Sep and want to to take two cameras. I don't want to be switching lenses with all the dust and we will be going as a family and my daughter who is very artistic would I think enjoy manning one of the cameras.

Thinking the 80D does the views, the people, closer animals if wanted, portraits and such and another camera has a telephoto and is more focussed on the wildlife. The intention is also that new body becomes my main camera and is versatile for portraits, my dog, family etc.

I am leaning towards an r7 with a RF100-400. this seems a good balance of reach and weight and would be a big step up body wise.

As a second use I also want to take some talking head type vlog videos for work and have been recommended a sigma 18-50 2.8 for that purpose and an upgrade on my now old but decent tamron (which would need an adapter).

I have plenty of time to get the new body, I would want a couple of months practice with it. Is the R7 and crop sensor the right choice? is it worth waiting for mk ii may be? Should I be looking at something else (within the canon RF family only). I am happy to spend a bit more than the R7 if particularly worth it but my research seems to show it is a good choice. How about the RF100-400 and the sigma 18-50? good choices for my purpose. Hobby only but I would like good results. thanks all!

Looking to use this camera I have for a photoshoot and I want these type of shots, is it possible with my canon eos m50 mark ii with the 15-45 mm lens ? Doesn’t have to be this exact quality but very close…I am sure I can’t get it exactly like these as most of these are shot on older and more expensive cameras/lenses. I know some of these are different but point out which ones if needed, all help will be very helpful. Any equipment that would be useful to get lmk

Canon Selphy CP1500 printing grey/blue tinged photos

Hoping someone can help or has found a solution to this.

Just got a Canon Selphy CP1500 and when I’ve gone to print my first set of photos, they’ve come out with a grey/blue tinge. It’s a bit disappointing because in my research this was the printer that came out on top for scrapbooking and printing photos from home.

I’m printing from an iPhone via the Selphy app and don’t have a computer / SD card to print from. I’ve also turned off image optimisation.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

R8 Mark 2 price is confusing

I shot on the original R8 and thought it was a great camera. I got it for around $1,200 on Amazon and use the RF 24-105f4. Now they've released the Mark II with essentially a joystick and Ibis for $1800. For around $100 more you can get an R6 Mark 2 or an a74. Even the Lumix S5 Mark 2 is within the same price range with more features. I love the R8 and think it's the best full frame entry level camera you can buy for the price. I was really hoping the Mark II would either be around $1500or $1600 or have more features like a bigger battery for the price. It's still new and the price will surely come down. Does anyone feel the same?

Tech Help Canon 1Dx error 20 - repairable?

I was shooting my team's practice tonight when my 1Dx suddenly decided it was done - I got the Error 20 and the shutter buzzes when I power it up or down. Pulled the battery for half an hour and put it back in; no difference. No visible issues with the mirror box. I've taken around 100k shots with this in 10 years, and while it was supported by Canon CPS I did have it serviced a couple of times for routine clean/check.

Am I out of luck? Does anyone repair these any more? I really don't want to buy an R-series camera and a whole new set of lenses... Thankfully my 1Dx mk II is still going strong.

Looking for new camera

Currently have a canon t6 with efs 55-250 and 18-55.

Budget $1600

Looking to get a new camera. I really want to upgrade the body right now and lens later using an adapter for now. I will primarily using it for sports (football and wrestling). Mirrorless would be preferred as well with sticking with canon but I would love all recommendations please!

EF 14mm 2.8L - On crop sensor samples

Hi,

I mostly shoot wildlife and portraits - so have always had crop sensor cameras and never felt limited with that stuff - but I have felt limited by my widest lens being 18mm on some occasions. I know almost nothing about wide-angle photography, except that every great shot I’ve ever taken was by accident.

Having never shot full frame, I don’t know what “22.5mm equivalent means”

I have a trip coming up where it could be useful. I was on a very tight budget of $250AUD for a lens, and was looking at used examples of the Tamron and Sigma zooms in the 10-20mm range.

Anyway, a near-mint 14mm 2.8 came up in my price range and I jumped on it because it was dramatically cheaper than any example of that lens I’ve ever seen and F2.8 could make it viable for indoor vlogging too.

I am likely away for when it arrives and won’t actually be able to use it for a few weeks, so I’m itching to see samples of the lens on a crop or any real-world usage. Please share your photos, and your reviews of the lens - even if not on crop sensor cameras- I was not expecting to buy it and have done no research.

If it’s a terrible lens, let me know, I’m about to start the research now 😂

Canon R50 V + 14-30mm + RF 50mm f/1.8 as a first hybrid kit (mostly photos)? Sanity check before I buy

Hi everyone! I'm about to buy my first interchangeable-lens camera and would love a sanity check.

**Use:** mostly photography (travel, portraits, everyday life), with some video. I live in a sunny coastal city, so I'll be shooting outdoors a lot.

**What's in my cart:**

- Canon EOS R50 V with RF-S 14-30mm f/4-6.3 PZ:

- Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM

**My reasoning:** the 14-30mm covers wide shots, interiors and video, and the 50mm covers portraits and low light. No overlap between them, and I can add a telephoto later (maybe the 55-210mm).

**My doubts:**

  1. The R50 V has no viewfinder. How much will I miss it for photography, especially in bright sun?

  2. Would I be better off with a regular R50 or an R10 with the 18-45mm kit lens + the 50mm for about the same money?

  3. Is the 14-30mm too wide/limited as a main lens for photos?

Thanks in advance for any advice!
