As I've gotten more into paddling I've wondered how to safely extend the season into early winter, and getting back out earlier than normal when spring first starts to show up.
It seems one of the big decisions is whether to look into full dry suits or the semi-dry suits. My takeaway is semi-dry is more comfortable for hours of paddling, but if you actually go overboard in cold water/air, you're going to be safer in a true dry suit. Does that check out?
I usually paddle solo or tandem in open canoes usually kneeling single blade style.
While we're on the topic, what else should I know? Layering, hands and feet, route planning, beacons, radios, etc?
Thanks!

Anybody know of anything that can remove leaf stains and is okay for gelcoat. I already tried starbright. And I did use a magic eraser on one or two spots but it was hard going.

Where have you taken it? Do you use it for fishing/recreation/etc? Are you paddling on lakes or rivers? Any tips for upkeep/maintenance? What do you love about it? What do you wish was different about it? Tell me everything!

From what I can tell it’s a 1998 old town discovery scout. Needs a wash, but it’s in good shape. Came with three pretty roached paddles, but they’ll do for now. Stoked to have a canoe again, gotta dust off my canoeing merit badge

Royalex. Needs new seats. Hull looks to be in decent shape. Any red flags?

This was local and I snagged this from Marketplace because I liked the color and I was looking for a fiberglass canoe. It's 16' OAL, and has no manufacturer tag of serial numbers.
It's probably a local Michigan manufacturer, but who knows. Does the design look familiar enough to anybody to guess at a manufacturer??

Anyone have any experience with this or similar t-formex/lite boats? Im in the market for an all around boat and am really limited to one boat. My main worry is the tformex lite will be flexy on the bottom of the hull. I think I am steering clear of composite boats for now because I am rough on equipment and know I will have a hard time keeping up on the gel coats. For some background my group generally does the allagash which has a combination of large lakes and class i and ii rapids. Next planned trip will most likely be the petawawa or dumoine. I know this is asking a lot from one boat and understand I will be giving up some performance on either end.

I rented a red one and it was so hard to maneuver. I sat at the back and had to row on the same side as the front person. I had to do the rudder? Paddle alot instead of J stroke.
Is this common? Could be a skill issue but id like to say im intermediate and i never had this issue before.

Hey guys! I’ve got yet another plea for canoe recommendations. I lead a scouting type organization in the east TN region. We enjoy taking advantage of the plethora of lakes in the area for a lot of our long weekend trips. We’ve done a couple 4-5 night trips in the GA swamp as well as weeklong trips in KY and many many 1-2 night trips on local lakes. This past week we were down in the swamp for 4 nights. I have been using an old plastic Coleman canoe for all these trips. On the second to last day of this recent trip I had the opportunity to try out a buddies Bell Northwind. It was eye opening to say the least. Not only did it glide in the water but it was SOOO much more stable. I am now looking to buy something used that I can take on these trips. Typically I’ve got my teenage son with me as well as gear and food for several nights. We pack light, often taking our backpacking gear and freeze dried meals. In the swamp we also need to bring water (had a 6 gallons this past trip). Looking for a couple best bang for your buck recommendations. Can’t spend several thousand, and hoping to find something use that would still give a similar sense of stability when loaded with 4 nights worth of gear. Tia!

So many birds! Magical place. Drove over the Gordie Howe bridge with the canoe too!

And no one’s around to hear, will it fall on my canoe?

Hello esteemed canoeing community. I have the opportunity to purchase this Scott prospector 15 for $1k CAD. It’s 10 years old and has been gel coated. I am an intermediate paddler (always rented or tandem with a friends) and looking to purchase my first canoe for a 50/50 split of solo and tandem trips. What are your thoughts on this canoe specifically?
