The Canberra Street Cat Alliance is legit. This isn’t some lady in her living room.

Being a registered charity doesn’t give them a free pass. If they’re willing to disregard scientific evidence when it comes to their core activities, I see no reason to blindly assume they’ve crossed every t and dotted every i with their coffee trailer.

What what scientific evidence are they disregarding? I'm out of the loop

Trap, neuter, release is the main one, shocking that it's still allowed in ACT.

Desexing doesn't stop cats from hunting native wildlife, it conflicts directly with ACT cat containment laws, and studies show it fails to shrink populations in urban environments without an unachievable >80% sterilization rate.

80% is totally achievable for CSCA. CSCA has extinct a number of colonies through their work.

CSCA has reported an intake of 600 cats (TNR, adopt and euthanised) across 3 years.

80% is not achievable achievable by any means.

Where they have focussed their efforts, it is totally achievable. They have hit 100% desexing rate for quite a few colonies.

The issue is that CSCA doesn't just desex these cats. They return them to the wild and provide ongoing food and care through those very colonies, keeping them in the environment where they continue to prey on wildlife.

Desexing stops reproduction, not predation, and research has shown that TNR does not reduce cat populations without extremely high, sustained sterilisation rates that are unrealistic to maintain at scale.

The whole organisation seems more focused on caring for feral cats than reducing the harm they cause. There's a difference between animal welfare and evidence based pest management.

If the goal is conservation, success means fewer cats and less native wildlife killed, not maintaining a permanent population of introduced predators in a desexed state.

Pay no mind to the crazy cat lady above

Different people behind it than the last sordid one.

Sounds like these guys actually own? the cats this time, so very different from last time. Oh, and they actually have food services premises and qualified employees.

u/Livid-Cat4507 3d ago

There are no cats. It's to raise money for the org which rescues cats.

i want to pet the cat

27

u/Wild-Kitchen 3d ago

They are a registered not for profit so will have all the required insurance and licence. And yes, the cats are theirs

The comments here are going to be fine. Just fine.

That coffee cart setup actually looks quite decent, but running it without barista is bold move

u/Pseudophryne 3d ago

Sounds like a catastrophe.

I’m Bank ing on it 🙏😂

The Canberra Street Cat Alliance is a fantastic organisation - two of my resident felines came from their foster to adopt program. Cat tax: Gus on the left (he knows that he is not supposed to be on top of that range hood) and Purdey, among the cookbooks.

These guys are actually legit however.

My only disappointment is the AI. There are so many artists in Canberra that could happily chug a gallon of water and whip up something nicer.

u/IntravenousNutella 3d ago

I understand the reference, but if it's in partnership with the street cat alliance it's legit.

Looks like there might also be no cats?

2

u/fertro 3d ago

"We have no cats, Kathleen!"

38

u/wakitriii 3d ago

I'd support them if they didn't use trashy AI

17

u/jonquil14 3d ago

It’s quite a choice for such a visible bit of decoration 😬

20

u/wakitriii 3d ago

Truly. I'm in the process of setting up an insta page where I can compile all the businesses in Canberra that think it's okay and normal to use it.

1

u/Fujaboi 3d ago

Alright, but these guys are a not-for-profit charity, so I think you can leave them off

Unfortunately AI is cheaper and easier to source than local talents

15

u/GildedLamington 3d ago

Theft is cheaper and easier than saving.

u/Glass_Palpitation420 1d ago

There were ways before AI and there are ways after. Being a small business does not justify doing damage to the environment and stealing art from actual artist. Canva, procreate, clip art studio ect ect there are so many options. Using AI is just lazy.

The CSCA is not a business. They are a charity run entirely by volunteers and do not receive any government funding.

2

u/Cultural_Victories 3d ago

It's a volunteer-run charity, I'm not going to judge them.

8

u/idontfuckingcsre 3d ago

they could make something in paint in 15 minutes that would look better and not steal from artists

14

u/SwirlingFandango 3d ago

It's different to the last one!

Last time the coffee was made by cats. This time the coffee is made out of cats.

Indeed. Mods really need to nuke this before Cat Street Alliance starts getting harassed by the "My target is valid so there are no bad tactics" crowd.

14

u/dizkopatio 3d ago

I support the street cat alliance just thought its a funny situation. I hope all the cats get homes and people can pat them before or after a cup of coffee. Infact I wish we could have these things simultaneously. Wish them all the best

One of my cats is a Street Cat Alliance alumni. Good organisation

1

u/TomamoT 3d ago

Where in Crace is this? At the shops?

3

u/TomamoT 3d ago

To answer my own question, it's not in Crace proper, it's just off the Barton Highway.

Pretty odd spot but I guess the rent is cheap.

In any case, this is nothing resembling the notorious cat cafe and OP should feel bad for spreading bollocks

1

u/angrypanda28 3d ago

So is this an actual cat cafe where i can pet cats? Or is it just fundraising?

3

u/crankygriffin 3d ago

I’m pretty sure there are ethical reasons not to run a cat petting cafe. Yes fundraiser!

-3

u/Majestic-General7325 3d ago

I'm so here for this

-4

u/Jumpingjehosephat99 3d ago

This is the kind of drama I need in my life.

-5

u/Euphoric-Blueberry37 Tuggeranong 3d ago

You have alerted the hoard

0

u/Spare_Judgment7957 3d ago

Crace is a cat containment suburb though lol

-2

u/createdtothrowaway87 3d ago

Are the cats making the coffee?

-4

u/hdhdhdhdzjursx 3d ago
