MLB union proposals

Everybody has seen the commercials MLB has put on tv about their proposal to the players. And would they accept it or say no?

The players union is going to say no to pretty much everything the owners have put out there. Especially if it has a salary cap attached to it. Unfortunately the 99% of players that won’t get mega contracts are too stupid to think for themselves and are failing to realize a salary cap helps them

Hmm. Sounds familiar to another situation…

Maybe Scott Boras can promise them a $5000 DOGE-ball check.

Or maybe a $90 medicine ball check

The owners want to pay the players more but the damn players won't let them!

More players will make more on average

Median, no, mean, absolutely.

On an AAV basis, in the short term, yes almost certainly

In the long term and over the course of their career, almost certainly not

I don’t really care if you don’t care about the players maximizing their earnings, they’re all making good money after all. But let’s not pretend like it will make them more money in a meaningful sense

I disagree, only if the owners actually are forced to open their books to show how much they make and share the revenue.

I fully believe that 85% of owners hide their profits to justify not spending money on payroll.

If an owner is actually forced to be transparent and share their revenue it will increase salaries. It also might force out owners who use this as a Ponzi scheme.

The owners are the ones pushing for it. You’re saying they want the cap even though it will make them lose money and could even get them forced out of their ownership stake?

Actually, if this was a Ponzi scheme (makes no sense in this situation but let’s go with it) it could even open them up to criminal litigation

And this is what they want? You gotta explain their motivation to me

Another part of that though. How many players ever truly get to play "long term".

By “long term” I meant in terms of the league, not individual players. You’ll see a flattening of salaries in the short term, but a widening long term.

And that’s the thing. The point of the owners’ proposals is to ensure that most players don’t hit free agency until well after their prime. And that most players won’t even hit arbitration before falling off

It does because it guarantees a revenue split between the owners and players. There currently is no such guarantee, owners could take as much of the pot above the salary floor and the players can’t really force them to distribute more. It will probably depress the salaries of the top 1% and mega agents a little bit at first but eventually the revenue guarantees are the rising tide that lifts all boats.

I think you should think a little harder about why the owners would want something that would lead to them spending more money, and why players would be against something that would increase their incomes. The answer is that your framing is incorrect and you’re making a lot of assumptions about what a system that could be agreed upon would ever look like

Thank you! I have tried to explain 1,000 times to cap supporters that the owners proposing a plan that will cause them to increase labor costs makes no fucking sense and they always just ignore the blatant contradiction and go back to insisting the players are stupid for not understanding how good the owners' proposal will be for them.

To be clear I do support a cap what people say about it just doesn’t make sense

I wasn't against the cap but the more people who have to totally bullshit me about how the players will totally win actually if the owners get what they want is driving me in the opposite direction. If a cap was so great it would not require a bunch of propaganda pushed out into the media by the owners.

Well, they’ll probably go on strike.

But if the ALCD and NLCS should tell you guys anything, it’s that maybe the Pirates woes go much deeper than payroll. The Rays and Brewers have marginally higher payrolls, and Cleveland’s is actually less than the Pirates. So maybe it’s not all about buying players or shelling out big money contracts.

Maybe the players the Pirates draft just aren’t very good or aren’t being developed right, because three small markets are poised to make the WS and Milwaukee is up 3-0 on the high priced Dodgers.

The players will never accept a salary cap

I honestly think they will... Eventually. Not until a salary floor of the Union's liking gets added to the proposals though. That could take awhile though ...

The same thing was said about the NFL and NHL
