Megathread Photography Megathread!

Gonna start showing off some local photography in the subreddit sidebar! Anyone looking on desktop will see it, and you can see just by tapping See More on mobile.

Please reply with your best local photography. As a pretty large sub, more than happy to show off your best photos as far as Warwick, Stafford, and Worcester! Caption them with where it was, when it was, if it was an event then tell us all about it, maybe an aerial shot from a plane then what route/airline was the flight?

Any AI photos or stolen photos (each one will be checked) will be ignored and/or removed.

This thread isn't where absolutely all photography should go. If you've been on a day out and want to share where you've been, by all means, make your own post.

Meta The future of planespotting at BHX

I made a post on this a few weeks ago, but I thought I'd make a new one and I've politely asked the mods to pin this for a while.

I created this petition 6 years ago calling for a dedicated planespotting area to be created at the airport: https://www.change.org/bhxspotting

It's generally inspired by the "Runway Visitor Park" at Manchester Airport which I've visited a few times. While there are spotting areas dotted around the airport, I think a dedicated facility with views that aren't currently accessible with additional components such as a kids play area, a shop and restaurant amongst other things would make it an all-round experience and generally safer.

Sheldon Country Park has had a few incidents over the years, and I think a dedicated facility with tight security would be a much more pleasant place to visit.

It's also not as easy to access via public transport. You can get there via bus but unless you're stopping at Marston Green Station specifically, it's not as easy to get there via train, certainly not from Birmingham International. Something specifically signposted as "BHX Viewing Area" or something would be even better.

We've amassed 350 signatures in 6 years. I really want to get some momentum now and get it to a level where it's attracting some attention from those who could make this happen. I've contacted my MP myself in recent weeks but god knows if it'll be looked at.

Anything you can do regarding sharing it about would be massively appreciated, but there's no pressure at all.

It has been running for 70 years and is set in a fictional West Midlands village so where better to record it than in Brum!

Plans to move recording to London or Manchester (what a surprise!)

What are the odds of these 'patriots' being the exact sort of people they claim to protect the area from?

Question Has anyone actually used Circle up, 222place etc to make friends?

• Upvotes

Hi all, I'm trying to make new friends in brum and I keep getting bombarded with Instagram ads for things like girls get social, the girls club, Circle Up, 222place and loads of others. I'd love to meet people and try new things, but most of them seem to be subscription based and fairly pricey if they’re rubbish, and there are so many I have no idea which (if any) are worth it.

The reviews I can find all feel like they could be bot-generated or paid for, so I don't really trust them.

-Has anyone actually used any of these apps or events, either on your own or with a friend? Was it worth the money?
-Did you meet people you genuinely clicked with, or was it more of a one-off thing?
-Are there any free or cheaper ways you've found to make friends in a new city (clubs, meetups, volunteering, classes, etc.)?

Honest experiences, good or bad, would be really appreciated.
TIA

New city, starting fresh - looking to make friends & connect!

Hey everyone!

I recently moved to Birmingham. I’m originally from South India, but I spent the last 5 years living down in Swansea and Cardiff. Moving to a brand new city where I don't know anyone has definitely been a bit of a reset.

I'm 27, easygoing, and work in tech/research. Outside of that, I’m usually down for good food, playing badminton, catching movies, finding good coffee spots, or heading out for social drinks and arcade games.

Also, I'm a pretty solid South Indian chef lol. So if we become friends, there’s a very high chance you’ll be getting some top tier home cooked food out of it.

If anyone is around the city centre area and wants to grab a coffee, hit a badminton court, or just hang out, feel free to drop a comment!

At this point I might sound like I'm rambling lol, but it would just be great to make some good friends to survive Birmingham with 🙌

Question Anyone done Birmingham Cocktail Weekend? Worth it for a solo visitor? 🍹

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hi fellow Brummies! 😃🍻

I'm a 42 year old bloke from London (construction manager), and I'll be working in Birmingham for the next five weeks.

I'll be managing some fit-out works around Birmingham New Street, working nights, so I'm looking for things to do on my weekends off that don't involve me being stuck in the apartment and questioning my life choices. 😂

I've come across the "Birmingham Cocktail Weekend", which looks like four days of hopping between bars, restaurants and fancy venues, sampling cocktails along the way. (From Thursday 22nd - Sunday 25th October)

Basically, bar hopping with a slightly more sophisticated excuse for drinking! 🍸😂

Has anyone here been to it before? If so, what's the experience actually like? Is it worth going, especially if you're heading there on your own?

I'll probably be going solo, if anyone else is planning to go, feel free to give me a shout!

Also, if you've been before, I'd love to hear:

I'm essentially trying to make the most of my five weeks in your city rather than becoming a permanent fixture in the apartment bar. 🤣

Appreciate any advice, recommendations or general Brummie wisdom! Cheers, everyone! 🍻

Vegan Desi pub options

Hello Brum,

We're having people stay with us in December and would love to take them to a Desi pub, preferably in the city centre, but one of the group is vegan.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a place which has vegan options as well as the usual mixed grills etc?

edit: thanks for all the recommendations, looks like it'll be Soho Tavern!

Brum tech week

Who's going to a Brum tech week event?

I've had a look at the site and there are a ton of events. Hard to know what is worth attending. Anyone with any insights on what might be good, interesting or useful?

For me any event that emphasises networking and meeting other people who are building startups will be quite useful.

Lack of public bathrooms in city centre

It's very difficult to find free public toilets in city centre. Lots of restaurants lock their bathrooms so only customers can use them. Should I miss on the street then as there aren't many parks in some areas?

Question Erasmus as a blind person in Birmingham

Hi! I will probably do an Erasmus exchange next year, and I am looking for testimonies about going on Erasmus as a blind person in Birmingham.
Here are my questions, of course you can skip some of them if you can't answer! And if you prefer to answer by DM, feel free to message me, you can also send voice messages if that's easier.
How did you navigate around the city? I personally have a guide dog, so I think he will be able to guide me, but I still need somebody to show me some things. Did you ask a specialised association to help you? The university will probably ask somebody to help me with the basics, but is that enough?
Could you get help with other daily life tasks, such as paperwork or even computer problems? I often have problems with my braille device, and not everybody knows how to fix it, so I want to be sure I will be able to get help if I have problems.
How did you handle everyday tasks such as shopping? Where I live (in France), it really doesn't bother me to go into a shop and ask the seller to help me, but I don't know if that's just a French thing or if it would be okay to do it in another country too.
I know that there is a special scholarship for disabled people, but when I asked my teacher, they didn't know exactly how much it was. I suppose it has changed since your trip, but do you remember how much it was, just so I have an idea? I am trying to find other sources, but none of them agree.
In terms of housing, did you have specific accommodations in your apartment? In France, I know that some blind students can ask for an accessible apartment with more space. It's not my case because I didn't have my dog when I started uni, but I might consider this option if I don't want him to live in a tiny room. Do you also remember the price of the flat? Was it on campus or somewhere else?
Could the university provide the same accommodations for your exams? I think I won't have problems with common things like extra time, but I often need an isolated room with a secretary to help me in case my computer has a problem, and I don't know if every university offers that.
How long before your departure did you start contacting your university?
Was there anything you wish you had asked before leaving?
Thanks for your help.

Question Relocating home with Korean wife and two kids - any experiences of East Asians settling into Brum?

Good day to all. My wife is from Korea and we're relocating to south Brum later this year. I'm a local but we'd love to hear some first or second accounts of how other East Asians have felt settling into Brum. For some context, we're in our early 40s and we've got two kids, so non-student experiences would be more useful for us but any insight, advice or thoughts would be massively appreciated. Many thanks in advance!
