What to do with books I no longer want?

I have a LOT of books, some of which I’m hoping to get rid of so I can make room for new ones and I’m curious on what I should do if libraries aren’t keen on accepting book donations?

Open Throat - Henry Hoke, thoughts (animal rights in literature)?

I read Open Throat this summer and it has been heavy on my mind since. For context, I'm a vegetarian and animal activist so I liked it partially for the awareness it brought to animal rights, specifically in the end. Something about the cornering of the animal and the fear beautifully captured in the verbiage moved me more than any animal rights book, though the novel isn't explicitly an animal rights book (to my knowledge).

I'm wondering if anyone else who read it also noticed how the first person narration helped to "humanize" animals so to capture and emulate human emotion on to animals.

Did any other animal rights people read this and what were your thoughts?

Did it do anything for the movement, did it depict a less than speciesist view on the relationship between humans and animals?

What do you do when you return to a book or series after a long break?

Hey everyone!

I'm doing some initial research into what happens when readers return to a book or book series after taking a break. This could be because life got busy, they started reading something else, or they simply didn't feel like continuing for a while.

I'm curious about your personal experiences:

  • What do you tend to forget? For example, plot events, character names and relationships, motivations, or details about the world?
  • What do you do to catch up? Do you reread previous chapters, skim through the book, look up summaries or character information, check discussions, or just keep reading and hope it comes back to you?
  • How well does that work for you? Is there anything frustrating, confusing, or time-consuming about getting back into the story?
  • What would make it easier? Is there something you wish you could quickly look up without having to reread large parts of the book?

If you have a specific example of returning to a book after a break, I'd love to hear about it!

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Grapes of wrath. Anti American?

Now that East of Eden has been adapted again. It got me thinking back to when I read Grapes of Wrath. Personally I can't even really see that book re-adapted (assuming it was ever made a movie to begin with).
My impression of the story struck me as a commentary against the American Dream and Capitalism. I agreed with it though.

Being a writer

Reading Yellowface by R F Kuang made me so eager to write and keep writing.

I have always wanted to be a writer. Wanted to write about myself, my struggles, or something entirely different, but whenever I got writing, I always felt that someone had written this story! I was feeling I was not doing anything different, just copying someone's work.

It made me so discouraged that I stopped writing on my book. Years passed, and I become a girl who writes in her journal only and nothing else. Even writing on journal got lesser. But now when I see my friends writing articles and short stories I feel a kind of jealousy that is known only to me. I don't have the feeling that why she/he is writing something but rather why I am not writing. Why I didn't publish or at least write a short story. I know there is a lot to tell and a lot to write, but why can't I change it into a narrative? I always have weird dreams about stories to form! I know I can be, but what's really detaining me? Just a fear of plagiarism? Or something else?

recommendations for underrated booktubers?

I’m looking to subscribe to more booktubers, and would like to support some lesser known booktubers (to me that is anyone under 1k subs.) I would love some recommendations, these are my preferences but I am open to check any out:

\- talk quietly and/or softly (I don’t like too much screaming and over reacting)
\- I don’t really want fantasy if that is what they mostly read as not really my thing (this can depend though)
\- a little bit of their personal life on there is fine but not too much

For those who read Blindness by Jose Saramago

Did you read the sequel? Would you recommend finishing? Or would you have felt satisfied with stopping after the first book?

I can't decide what I want to do. Book one seemed to wrap up so nicely, but book two seems like an interesting concept, too.

Thanks!

Anyone else often read the ending or the middle of a book before the beginning?

I do this with TV also. I don't want to watch anything that's going to make me sad or have a dog die.
