Does sourdough starter count as an inanimate object? Mine is named Victor Hudough because one time I made a boule that rose in a very wonky way in the oven, and when I showed a photo to my friends, one of them called it a hunchback like Quasimodo. So I figured I'd name my starter after the author who created him.

Anyway, I've got my 5k run coming up on Sunday! My brother's running it with me, and a couple of cousins and two of my brother's employees will be walking it. It's a fundraiser for breast cancer research, so the support is very touching. Let's hope it doesn't rain on Sunday!

On the book front, I've finished a whopping four novels this week: Katabasis, The Blue Castle, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, and DCC 3. I've started DCC 4 now that I unsuspended my Libby hold.

Bahaha, that's a very clever name for your sourdough starter, I love it. And how lovely to have so much support for your fundraiser race! Have fun, and I hope the weather is nice.

What did you think of Katabasis? It's been on my list for ages, but I didn't have time to read it with the sub.

I liked Katabasis. If you're interested in dark academia, it's pretty good.

Love this name!

Have fun on your run, I hope you'll have a lot of support. Are you a runner or is it only for the charity aspect?

I'm a runner, though I've promised my mom I wouldn't go all out.

I love your name for the sourdough starter! I wish I had kept mine alive from the pandemic when the whole world seemed to be keeping and trading starters ๐Ÿ˜‚

I currently have a Camry named Tug! After a fictional horse. My car before this was a black Sonata with blue lighting named Nightwing. Before that, I had a super old mercury Sable named Calvin. ๐Ÿ˜

u/TalliePiters ๐Ÿ“šBookclub Boffin๐Ÿ“š 12d ago

Woahhhh! Nightwing is just perfect ๐Ÿ˜ wouldn't expect any less from a Dragon Rider!)) The others are cool too ๐Ÿ‘

Oh and my dad used to have a Sonata, I loved it so much, they're so elegant)

I love that you named your bike!! I've named all of mine. I currently have two, a regular one called Meredith and an electric one called Eleanor! That hyena head pendant sounds rock-n-roll!

1

u/TalliePiters ๐Ÿ“šBookclub Boffin๐Ÿ“š 12d ago

It's hand sculpted too (not by me though))

Oh a fellow biker! Meredith and Eleanor must be exquisite ๐Ÿ˜

I had a car that was white and super old I thought she looked all sassy when I would put the paddle boards on her racks and head to the ocean. It was like you could see her just feeling so proud that she could still do this.

My friend named her Betty White.

It stuck forever and the next owner still calls her Betty White.

She sounds wonderful!)

I was woken by an earth tremor at quarter past 2 this morning, magnitude was only 4.8 though so not big. They're still unsettling though! I never name cars but I can't stop myself from considering the letters in registration plates as acronyms and making up words. My daughter calls her car Tay Tay (it's a Suzuki Swift).

These things are always so scary! I'm sorry it happened to you, but I'm glad everything is fine.

A friend of mine also does the things with acronyms for the registration plates, I have realised I started doing it as well lol

New to r/bookclub ๐Ÿ˜Š Excited to be here! I just started Between Two Fires and Iโ€™m really enjoying it so far. Itโ€™s definitely not something I would have picked up on my own, so Iโ€™m glad I came across the recommendation. Looking forward to seeing what everyone else thinks!

I recently made a commitment to spend less time doom-scrolling, so reading has become part of that.

Edit: I'm not much of a decorator for the shoulder holidays (Halloween, Thanksgiving etc.,) I go all out Christmas though.

Welcome! I made a point to always have a book downloaded on my phone for this exact same reason, so that I can do something good for myself when I have some time that I would normally spend on my phone doing nothing.

I've only ever named my mounts (cars and bikes) and my plush toys. For the latter, I have a nemo plushie called Tony (it has to do with Tony Hawk and getting it at the same time as a skater cap) and an orca named Rata because I used to have a (pet) rat called Orca ๐Ÿ˜†

I want to name more things though. My phone should get its own name for sure.

2

u/TalliePiters ๐Ÿ“šBookclub Boffin๐Ÿ“š 12d ago

If I didn't have a hard time coming up with names I would've named EVERYTHING! Muahahaha

I'm a doll collector so naturally all my plushies (and dolls) have names too)

Whatโ€™s your favourite name youโ€™ve given one of your dolls & plushies?

2

u/TalliePiters ๐Ÿ“šBookclub Boffin๐Ÿ“š 11d ago

Ughh it's always so hard to choose! I'm going to say Bahamut and Tempest for two of my dragons - one quite small and the other one very large)

Oh these are perfect dragon names!

My current car is named The Lobster because it's red and after we bought it, we ate dinner at Red Lobster. Growing up, my brother and I shared a car that we called The Goblin, after Jareth in the movie Labyrinth. We had a Garmin GPS, which we called Mabel. As a kid, I used to name a lot of my stuff: I had an iPod named Wasabi because it had a green case, and my stereo's name was Butch because it was big and sturdy.

It's been a busy work week, so I'm glad it's the weekend! I'm doing some volunteering in the mornings both days, and then on Sunday night, my mom and I are going to a play called Romeo and Zooliet. It's the Shakespeare play but with super detailed animal puppets! The pictures kind of remind me how they do The Lion King on Broadway, and I'm super excited.

In reading news, I finished Children of Strife and loved it, I think even moreso than the third book. It feels like Tchaikovsky isn't forcing this series, but rather writing new books as he comes up with new ideas, which I think is a great approach. I just started Flashlight by Susan Choi for my IRL book club - has anyone read that one yet?

u/Material_Cookie5766 12d ago

Children of Memory is the third one, so if you liked the fourth better than that, you must have really got on with the crows.

2

u/Less_Tumbleweed_3217 Born To Read, Forced To Work | ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿง  12d ago

Yeah, the way I worded it was unclear. I meant to convey that Memory is my least favorite so far, so I was glad Strife was better. I did like the crows, but I found Memory consistently confusing and slow going.

2

u/TalliePiters ๐Ÿ“šBookclub Boffin๐Ÿ“š 12d ago

So Jareth was a favourite character of yours?)

The play sounds awesome! Please tell us how it went next week)

I am excited for fall and spooky season, for sure! We haven't decorated in years, since my son was little. And now we live on an odd block where it is only 3 residential properties surrounded by commercial and historic buildings, as well as a state park, so we get no trick-or-treaters. That makes it feel even less important to make the effort to decorate. I do enjoy putting some seasonal items out front though (mums, a pumpkin or two, maybe some decorative corn). I just finished a bunch of books, so I'm off to do a lot of discussion questions!!!

I'm ready for spooky season, but I don't decorate my house or anything. I usually watch a lot of scary movies throughout the month.

I'm currently reading Death with Interruptions by Jose Saramago. I have few more chapters to read for this week's discussion. I'm also listening to Fallow by Sarah Anderson on audiobook. It's really good so far.

Iโ€™ve been on a Reddit hiatus and now Iโ€™m back and looking forward to keeping up with my book subs again. Death with Interruptions is on my TBR shelf, maybe Iโ€™ll catch up later.

Welcome back! I have been very intrigued by Death with Interruptions so far!
