Meta [Meta] New Reader Orientation Post
Welcome to r/bookclub bibliophiles!
We are glad you found us! We recognise that it can be a lot to take in when you first visit the sub so we have created this post to help orientate you and figure out how to get the most from r/bookclub.
We love to hear from new readers, how or why you found us, what types of books you like to read and anything else you are willing to share. Please introduce yourself and/or ask any questions you may have in the comments below π
What is r/bookclub?
We are a reddit sub, public book club that anyone can join in with at any time. We host multiple books monthly so you can tailor your participation to your own reading preferences. You can even hop into older book posts because we never archive posts.
What are we reading now?
Our Monthly Book Menu post is always pinned to the top of the sub. Sort by "hot" in the Feed options if you don't see it. Alternatively head to the r/bookclub Google Calendar in the sidebar.
How do I get started?
Easy! Find which book(s) interest you, get your copy, check the schedule for which chapters will be discussed and start reading.
Discussion posts will be posted according to the schedule (note - our team is spread all over the globe. As such, posts may go up any time on the date given depending on the poster's timezone), and anyone can comment on those posts at any time. Remember to check which chapters to read for a discussion and do not comment on chapters further along in the book. This is considered a spoiler and is against the r/bookclub rules.
Can I pick the books that we read?
Yes! Well, kinda. Many of our books are nominated by you the reader. The book we read is then chosen by popular vote from r/bookclub members based on these nominations. Scheduled nominations go up on the 1st of the month and again on the 9th. Additional nomination posts occur at varying times through the month.
We also have Mod Picks, Evergreens and Runner-up Reads that are chosen by our hardworking team of Mods, Read Runners, Boffins and Thor's randomising wheel.
What are the different types of "reads"?
We read a wide range of works, and we have regular themed reads. You can find out about the different types and the definition of all the terms we use here in our FAQ
Where can I find more information?
The sidebar is a great resource for finding key info quickly.
The top menu has links to our wiki, current schedules, past selections, our Ministry activities and, most importantly, our FAQ and rules. Lots of helpful information there!
You can also contact the mods directly via the Modmail option in the sidebar (but be aware that it may take a few days for us to reply, we might be too busy reading).
What else does r/bookclub offer?
Loads of fun things!!
We run an annual Book Bingo, beginning in January every year (but it is possible to join at any time in the year).
We like to talk about reading as much as we like talking about the books we read, so we have plenty of Off Topic posts. Some are themed, like the Monthly Book Report, and some are free to chat about anything on your mind, like the Friday Chat Free posts.
You can also choose a fun user flair for yourself from the sub settings!
And you never know the Ministry of Merriment may make another fun activity for you to participate in later this year...
Most of all, we hope you'll enjoy reading and discussing books with us!
Happy reading newbies π

Hi there! Iβm a 39 year old female from Pennsylvania, USA. I have ADHD and am in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. I was never successful at reading books in the past, especially fiction, but I made it a goal of mine for 2025 to read one book per month. And so far Iβve read 10 (itβs July)! So Iβm ahead of my goal (super proud of myself) and I just wanted to see what a book club was all about since Iβm finding myself enjoying reading much more than I anticipated! Anyway, hi and thanks for reading!

Hello good people! I'm Evcer and I used to read a lot of books when I was a child, day in and day out when academic stress was sky rocketing. I am currently an aspiring 2D game developer (and I should be coding right now) but sometimes I'd like to read in between breaks. If I am being honest, I have NEVER been to a book club before (online or offline) so it's quite intimidating for a first timer. Also thank you for making those orientation post, it's quite a helpful thing to keep around.

Hi all, I joined when I found the bookclub when I created an account on reddit 3 days ago. I was always a keen reader, while having a preference for physical books. With the eyesight getting worse, I finally switched to reading on my tablet and phone since October 2023. Now I'm a vigorous reader for my own doing π. Not the 100s of books a year, but still surpassing my personal goal of 20 books a year. For 2025 I'm trying to get all GoodReads challenges. I'm currently reading The god of the woods from Liz Moore, after finishing The Thursday Murder Club. Two very different books, while there are dead / missing people and a couple of detectives. I didn't participate in the bookclub read, but I'll get back to the discussion on the go.

Hello, I am not really much of a book reader, I prefer comics. Tbh IΒ have never been in a book club irl or online. I found this through r/books (I am also new to reddit!) I joined because i want to read more things that match my taste (there are more books than comics). I can read anything that doesn't have romance.Β My favorite genres(?) are fairytales and psychological but since i haven't read a lot thats quite subjective.Β Thanks for having me! :)

Hey everyone!) Thanks for running this awesome subreddit! I'm Tallie, and I've been looking to join a book club for ages, but have been unsuccessful so far... Until I stumbled on this one! Looking forward to everything now))
I like good sci-fi and fantasy, and also non-fiction (I tend to take turns reading fiction and non-fiction), but I do not limit myself to these genres only (I was happy to discover the "Oliver Twist" reading plan)) English isn't my first language, but reading in it is a special guilty pleasure of mine))

Hi! New here and I realize this must be a dumb question but how does the schedule for each book work? For ex. Huckleberry Fin is chapter 1-17 on 2/2. Does this mean I need to have read those chapters by that date or start reading those chapters on that date? Sorry this is my first time attending a book club π

Hello, I searched out a book club reddit. I had an awesome school librarian run a book club throughout middle and high school. I tried to start a small one with some friends as an adult, but we were too disorganized and never got past choosing the first book. With so much going on, this does seem a little overwhelming, but I can understand why so much structure is needed. I'm hoping to have some great discussions here, and look forward to reading with you.

Hey everyone, I'm so happy I finally found an active book club online, I used to LOVE and I mean LOVE reading as a kid but as I grew up, school and life got in the way and consumed most of my time; however, I'm planning on managing my time like an actual adult now and make time for things I enjoy. I like to read almost everything, I like trying different tropes and genres, so almost no restrictions when it comes to recommendations :)
Unfortunately, most of my friends don't read and I'm left with only one friend that reads 1 book every year (which is fine), but as I said I want to read more, make it a habit, and discuss about the books I read; that's why I'm here. Can't wait to join different discussions and thanks for having me οΌγ₯οΏ£3οΏ£οΌγ₯ββ€οΈο½

Hello everyone!
I love reading and have always wanted a reading buddy, but most people around me are not interested in reading. English is not my native language, but many great books have not been translated into my native language, so I try to keep reading in English to access a broader range of reading options. I came from Mina Lee's video "how to actually get smarter again" and somebody in the comments siad that joining a book club where they hated all of the books they read ended up being beneficial. They had to analyze and articulate why they didnt like the text and yea. Son i thought to myself i should join a bookclub. But like there's not any around me so i thought reddit totaly has a book club. And kablam here you are so I think i am going to do the next one on feb 28? Picture of Dorian Gray is exciting, i haven't read it but i've been wanting to so it's perfect. Also, i wanna say i dont think i will hate all the books i read here like i meant like i meant that it would work out my brain. So thank you very much im excited to read Dorian Gray :)

Hello!!! I canβt believe I didnβt find this sub sooner. It is so nice to see a sub where a diversity of books are active and being discussed. I have been a life long reader, but I got back into serious reading a couple years ago. I kept coming back to this page after searching up the short stories in βNever Whistle at Nightβ and this page was the first result that popped up.
Anyways, I reached my goal to read 60 books this year and I will keep reading. It is one of the few things in life that brings me joy. I will read anything and everything as long as it is well written. My preferences though are horror, historical fiction, and gothic romance.

Thank you!!! I am actually still reading βNever Whistle at Nightβ, but I think the book is great. Some of the stories didnβt stick with me, but there were a few that was both horrific and profound.
I am also reading a couple of fantasy books right now. I am planning to go back to reading classics in September and just in time for fall.

Hello there, I am resuming my reading after a decade long hiatus of school and college education. I have been lurking here for a few days, going through the discussions and thinking how to join in. I think I should pick up a book from June and start participating in the discussions from now on. So happy to find a space that will help me stay in groove of my reading goals.
Happy reading everyone πΈ

Happy to have found this. Iβve been looking for book clubs in my area but most are women-only or senior book clubs. Nothing wrong with either of those but I am neither of those groups :)
Looking forward to July⦠I found this at a great time

Wow, how come I've never stumbled upon this before? Had to do a little Google fu, but I'm here.
Looking forward to participate in the July reads! I wanted to make my hobby a little bit more social, but IRL bookclubs are few and far between where I live.
Thanks for this great initiative!

Hi there! I have been trying to find a book club in real life, because I am an avid reader and would love to discuss the books I read with others.
However, my search has been unsuccessful so far which is why I was really happy when I found this sub. It looks super active and very well organised, so I am very excited to join!

Hey π Iβm Kay and I love books. I find it hard to find people in real life who share an interest in books the same way as me. I came across this group in a post regarding madam bovary.. Iβve ever only been in one book club and it was from my work. It was interesting to say the least. Iβm looking forward to seeing the discussions and books we are to read :)

Hi! I was excited to come across this sub when it was mentioned in a comment about best translations of Les Mis. I wouldnβt say Iβve been reading quite extensively throughout my life, but I feel that having had the toughest year of my life to date has pushed me to seek connection and find peace in reading other peopleβs stories, opinionsβ¦ Iβve been mind blown with how reading things as old as the 1800βs can still feel so relatable. Iβm excited to experience the diversity this sub brings!

u/Psyhe Nov 03 '24
Hi! I'm Irina, from Romania ^^ I found this place by googling, just now, what month is The tenant of Wildfell Hall set in / when does it begin. I haven't really found an answer, but I found this subreddit, which is even better! :)) Funnily enough it apparently was one of the reads in one *november*, the current month. Thing is, as silly as this preoccupation may sound, I can't gauge when it fits better, as it somehow has 'february' vibes for me, but I'm curious to read it... any suggestion?
---
What I like to read: literary fiction provides the richest reading experience for me. I also go for sci-fi a lot (and am on a mission to cover - no pun intended - as many sci fi classics as I can, I already read 'the main ones', trudged through some from a sense of duty, doing 'geek homework'... :)) ), but also read some new stuff. I do love fantasy, too, but only lightly dabbled in newer fantasy books, for now. I'm interested in historical fiction. Mystery is pretty cool to me. Well, I don't care much for genre, just that it has interesting ideas and is written well, with captivating prose, compelling characters and an enveloping atmosphere.
---
Your november list looks fantastic, saw some stuff from my 'soon-TBR' there but new interesting books too!

Thank you for offering this. I should have known that Reddit was gonna be the answer to my Google query βare there any book clubs that I can join where we discuss the book as weβre reading it, especially difficult books to read alone like A Little Life.β Lol
Iβm a little more than halfway through the book A Little Life, and I am finding myself needing very badly to find folks to discuss it with. None of my in real life friends are as voracious a reader, as I, and some books I can sail through no problem but most books, I wish I could discuss them along the way - not just at the end after Iβve read it. Thereβs too many thoughts, ideas and questions that I have along the way so I am absolutely thrilled to have found this sub and I feel like I might just live here. Thank you again for offering this. ππ½ππ¦π

Hi! I have recently rediscovered my love for reading. Initally I started reading again to lessen my screen time and instantly fell back in love with it. I mostly read YA books but have started to branch out to other genres. I hope by joining this bookclub I can keep up my passion for reading and discover more genres and books. I have randomly discovered this sub on my reddit FYP after joining r/books and r/buecher (German book subreddit). I have never been in a bookclub, so I want to see if it is something I want to keep participating in.

u/PolicyEvening1796 Jan 06 '25
Hello, everyone! Thank you for running this club! I used to read books a lot but gradually less and less books over the years due to a lot of circumstances. I'd like to go back to my old habit of reading many books for joy of reading and for knowledge gain. I like both fiction and non fiction books and often found myself "in the flow" when reading these genres: thriller, magical realism, science fiction, or historical fiction. I don't know what I will be reading yet since all books that you selected sound awesome but I'll be choosing one and start reading it.

Ah! And forgot to add some of my favorite reads. I track everything on The Story Graph, and some of my all time favorites are Creatures, My Absolute Darling, A Little Life, The Rabbit Hutch, Bunny, and Little Rabbit (a leporine trio!). I love storytelling that not only broaches the unconventional, but has you questioning your own perceptions or self-defined beliefs. And have a penchant for the dark and dramatic.

Hi! I'm excited to join. I was an avid reader as a kid and teenager, but it fell off at college. When Covid hit, I was out of work, and I read Where the Crawdads Sing, and my love for reading took off again. Now I read around 60 books a year! I read all genres but mostly find myself reading fantasy romance, historical fiction, and cozy mysteries. No genre is out of the limits, though I tend to do nonfiction via audiobook. I'm also a "mood reader" so I tend to read 2-3 books at a time from different genres according to how I'm feeling at the moment. I often rate books by how they make me feel and how I enjoy them vs. How well written they are.
Currently reading: Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune Winter Garden by Kristen Hannah (audiobook) Strangled Skein by ACF Bookens Good Inside by Becky Kennedy
Favorite Books/ Series:
Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien
Throne of Glass and A Court of Silver Flames by Sara J Maas
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (love the humor!)
Recent favorite this year thus far: The Women by Kristen Hannah

We have a lot of readers who read in different languages. Discussions often come with a summary that may help orient you into discussing the book in English (I know they have helped for me on the odd occassion I read in my 2nd language). Also we love being able to take about subtlties in translations in discussions so in fact it adds to the richness of the discussions when people do read different translations. Might be fun to try, if something really stands out to you. I can, of course, understand that it is all a bit overwhelming when you are new and adding another element into the mix is maybe not idea for your first read. There is no right or wrong way to participate though, so however you decide you want to get involved we are just glad to have you here fellow reader :)

Iβm also here because of the recent post in r/books. I love the idea of being in a book club, but have never actually done it because I am all over the place with what I read, and how much, and when. Some months Iβll read ten books, some months I barely read at all, so Iβve never felt like I am a good fit for a book club - or come across a book club that was a good fit for me, I guess. I absolutely adore reading though (mainly fiction) and love sharing book opinions with other readers, so I am happy to have found this sub.

Hi! Found you via the movie adaptation discussion of Little Women. I just finished watching two adaptions NOT being discussed. I'll need to find the 1994 and 2019 adaptions and watch them to join in. This book is a favorite from childhood. Currently I am listening to an unabridged audio version. (I am elderly and always look for an audio book to save my eyesight.) I just finished the audiobook of The Birthday of the World by Le Guin, and The Dispossessed, ditto, which I had read but never listened to before. I'm also relistening to The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison, a favorite. I'm two-thirds done with the hardback edition of The Magician of Tiger Castle by Louis Sachar, best known for Holes.Β
I must confess that I find the community a little overwhelming to navigate. There are multiple books being discussed at the same time. Although I do own some of the books being discussed, I would need to request most from my library. When will February's list be posted? March? There is a queue for most audiobooks, though not for Little Women, thankfully.Β
I am thrilled to be here and hope I can make a contribution, eventually. It's great that you don't archive the posts, by the way. It feels very welcoming to newbies. What else? I ran a wildly unsuccessful online book group during COVID that transitioned to an in-person group, which I handed off to a new moderator. It always has a waiting list to attend now. Lol. I also ran a very successful online X-Files fanfiction discussion on Live Journal, from 2007 to 2016. It was fun while it lasted, but the fandom moved to Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr (and apparently reddit) and I started reading books again.Β

Hi, I found this reddit when I Googled something about The Decagon House Murders by Yukito Auarsuji (reading it for a badge on the website Pagebound)
I'm an avid reader of different genres (both nonfiction and fiction). Hello! I'm glad I've found this subreddit and I hope I did before. I have always loved reading but I struggle a lot to keep motivated or to not forget, that's why I have so many unfinished books scattered around my house. I noticed that the books that I have actually finished are the ones that have been recommended to me by real people that are interested in what I think of them so recently I thought that a book club would be just what I need! I actually read about everything (fiction, science, political, self improvement, biographies and so on) so everything is welcomed!

Hi from Aruba π¦πΌ, I'm 37 year old living in the Caribbean, wasn't a fan of reading throughout schooldays but everything changed when one monthly allowance went to buying my first book. That was city of bones by Cassandra Clare and it made me a book collector after that. But 3-4 years ago or maybe than that I lost my mojo jojo of reading and I want it back that's why I search and joined this group. My book collection contains fantasy, sci fiction, romance, teens, detective, mythology, thriller etc type of genre. And I wanna keep buying more books and read them.. hope someone can help me.

Hi everyone! I'm excited to find this book club and participate in discussions! This year I've been making it my goal to read more, and I would like to continue my streak by reading books I'm interested in along with this group to keep me accountable. I also just enjoy how book discussions help me reflect. Looking forward to get started with this upcoming months Yesteryear, which has been on my TBR list!

Hello Everyone! This is my first time joining a book club. I've been reading off and on throughout my life, but never had someone else to talk about books with. So I'm happy to join. For fiction I like to read fantasy, horror, mystery and sci-fi books.

Hi, Iβm a 25F writing from Sauble Beach, Ontario! Iβve never been in a book club before, but since Iβve recently gotten my love for reading back, I thought this would be a fun opportunity! Since I am also beginning to write again, I thought the idea of analyzing books in a deep and meaningful way with others would be helpful in my writing journey as well:) happy to be here!!

Hi, I've always wanted to be part of a book club but it's been tricky to find people and have schedules match. Also throw in some neurodivergence and sprinkle a bit of demand avoidance and it's no wonder I've not succeeded. But I was drawn to this space cos I saw a post saying that a Robin Hobb book was nominated for book club and I was in! I love reading, largely most types of fiction (die-hard fantasy fiction fan), though I've begun to read a bit more non fiction. I just finished Butter by Asako Yuzuki, and now I'm super keen to read more translated works from around the world. Really looking forward to having a place to come to to talk about books and engage with others β€οΈ

Hi I'm from Sri Lanka, I really loved reading from my young age and used to go to library in my neighborhood. But as I reached my teenage years I was so drawn into the social media and looking at screens for hours. Now as I approached my twenties I want to build some healthy habits discover myself again. I am reading a book currently at my own pace and I hope I can discuss more about book's in this sub. Thank you!

Hello all!
30 year old mom of two, long time bookworm that's always wanted to join a book club, but for books that actually captured my interest so glad this seems to be varied in genres!
Most of my reading is done during my commute to and from work or when winding down for bed but this gives me an excuse to stay off my phone for even longer so happy to be here!

Iβve been using fable to run bookclub but I also spend a decent amount of time on Reddit. I figured itβd be great to add Bookclubs to the algorithm since Iβve been successfully running in person book club for 2 years. I just donβt get enough of chatting about it. So happy to be here!!

Thanks for running the club and orientation. I was in a book club online that never moved forward. Our group were ppl with autoimmune disease. Reading helps me deal with the frustrations disease can bring. This one seems very active. I can't wait to start! Is there a place or find a Mod where I can nominate a book? If so, Im interested in nominating "Maame" by Jessica George, which was the book we read for our stagnated club.
