General Discussion Two Years In on Bolt Action v3, What Are Your Thoughts?

Version Three dropped in late September, 2024 so we all have had two years to play and think! As such, I figured I would throw a general discussion thread up to share thoughts and reflections on how it has been so far. This thread is intended to be pretty free-wheeling, so any and all insights are welcome, but to kick things off, some of the core questions worth considering and weighing in on:

  • What changes do you think the designers got right?
  • What changes do you think got wrong?
  • What changes were simply unnecessary (Right, wrong, or neutral)?
  • What small things still need work but seem attainable with the current ruleset?
  • What are you hoping for with releases post-Armies of Europe?
  • How has v3 been for competitive games, versus casual?
  • What would you focus on for a hypothetical Version 4 in however many years (or Version 3.5 if you prefer)?
  • Was v3 an improvement on v2?

Just a quick picture of today’s game. It’s being played on a 12’x6’ table set in the eastern front in 1944. Roughly 3,400 points although we don’t really care about points it’s more about the scenario.

Very rough draft but working on some raised roads/railroads. I was thinking of gluing them to cardboard with and wider base and using some sculptamold to make it smoother

Modeling, Painting, and Terrain Building Pro Tip: because of the identical suspension type and layout, you can use your spare Maultier track assemblies and plasticard to make Bren Carriers.

Now TECHNICALLY the specific setup is more in line with the American T16 Universal Carrier, which had 4 roadwheels instead of 3, but same dif.

Im using this concept to build the Panzerjager Bren since Warlord refuses to release it and I think its a cool Universal Carrier variant. Though Im not so far along that I can change it to something else.

From tonight’s game. Lost, again, but great fun! Second shot - dramatic encounter between panzer IV and a Stuart. The little feckers kept putting HE pins on my Panzer so it didn’t do much. Every game is a lesson learned :D

Hey everyone!

I’ve been working on a Bolt Action 3rd Edition list builder for our OC Bolt Action community and I’d love to get some more people trying it out. I originally developed this for our local community to help with building scenarios and custom profiles. I was hesitant sharing this with everyone because truthfully idk if I have the bandwidth to handle a large user base but I can tackle those issues when they come about.

You can try it here: https://ocboltaction.com/army-builder

You don’t need an account to give it a go. You can click Try Now and pick a nation as a guest. If you want to save and manage your companies, you can register and it will then save your lists.

A few things it offers:

  • Build platoons, configure units and upgrades, and track points and order dice.
  • List validation to help catch missing requirements and platoon restrictions.
  • PDF exports with weapon profiles and special rules, in a familiar roster format.
  • Shareable army links, with a QR code on saved army PDF exports.
  • Custom scenarios with additional rules, armies, and units, plus community armies such as the Chinese forces.

There’s a lot of army data and plenty of unusual rule interactions, so I’m especially interested in people testing armies they know well. If you spot an incorrect points cost, missing option, wrong restriction, or something that just doesn’t work properly, please let me know. I did try my absolute best in making sure everything is correct but I'm almost positive I got some things wrong!

You can report bugs on our Discord: https://discord.gg/yKeRzTH2m9

If possible, include the army/book, unit and option involved, what you expected to happen, and a screenshot or shared list link. A book/page reference would also help with rules or data corrections.

General feedback is welcome here too, especially anything confusing or awkward to use on mobile.

Thanks to anyone who gives it a try!

Rules Predictions for Vichy and Free French rules

Now that the teaser for the pre-capitulation French are out, what are we thinking for Vichy and Free French?

I'd like to see a lot of the Vichy rules be similar, perhaps swapping the artillery related rules out to represent the German support but keeping the FFL and Chasseur rules.

For free french, I'm expecting to see a lot of British and US equipment available, and perhaps Airborne or even Commandos as an option?

What would you like to see?

General Discussion The Soviet Armies - Bolt Action

Here's a new article about the Soviet Army. It took me several weeks to write it, and it wasn't exactly a walk in the park. Usually, the words just flow from my mind to the keyboard, but this time, I struggled a bit to get them down.

I don't know why that was.

I hope you won't struggle too much while reading this article.

Rules Inconsistent Costing for Military Police

An interesting inconsistency that I found...

The USA has a MP unit. It has rifles by default. It has the "Back in the Fight" Rule with a range of 6". It has the "Traffic Direction" Rule (which because it is US, gives a +1 boost rather than negating the -1 boost). This costs 9 pts per inexperienced man.

The UK has a MP unit. It has rifles by default. It has the "Back in the Fight" Rule with a range of 6". It has the "Traffic Direction "Rule (which is simply the negation of the -1). This costs 9 pts per inexperienced man.

Italy has a MP unit. It has rifles by default. It has the "Back in the Fight" Rule, but with a range of 12". It has the "Traffic Direction" Rule (which is simply the negation of the -1). This costs 8 pts per inexperienced man. Despite being more powerful due to the double range, Italy's MP unit costs one point less than the US and UK.

Germany has a MP unit. It has rifles by default. It has the "Back in the Fight" Rule, with a range of 6". It has the "Traffic Direction" Rule (which is simply the negation of the -1). They get a whole extra rule, "Chained Dogs", to negate "Shirkers" on Strafbats within 6". This costs 8 pts per inexperienced man. Despite being more powerful due an extra rule that they lack, Germany's MP unit costs one point less than the US and UK.

As far as I can find, these have not been corrected in the FAQ.

So basically we have three different point costs for MPs, with the US/UK being the same, but pricier compared to the Italians and Germans, who each have some variation that buffs their MP units in comparison, but nevertheless they cost less.

Please make it make sense.

Rules USSR rules really aren't that "fun"

Looking at the new French rules, being very themed, histroical and fun. As a Soviet player I cant help but feel jealous....

Why is it we don't have rules like Deep Battle, maskirovka / masking, Shock armies, Guards ect. Instead we have 40K commissars. inexpericed units that might lose a pin when close to an enemy, Mased batteries which is the opposite of Soviet artillery doctrine.

Even the infatry squads, most are just generic units. Why are partisans just inexperced, Guards are just regular. Siberans and Naval troops are just tough fighters, Where are squads like Sturm groups, Mountaineers.

Maybe even split the book up between early war and late war. The Red Army in 1941 was very driffent to the Red army in 1944 / 1945. When the whole thing is combined it feels like a bit of a mees.

List Building 1249 Jäger & Hetzers

Jäger inspired light infantry late war force that moves through woodland and uses the mobility of Fieldcraft and ARs to hit at mid range. Hetzers seem historically appropriate and fit the hunting theme. Leaning into Spahltruppen.

I'll be using the Victrix LW Germans with lots of field caps.

Obviously buying squads as Gebirgsjager to access Fieldcraft but I think it makes sense. Trying to use move through difficult terrain and the range of ARs in place of buying transports and SMGs.

I can get an extra dice by reducing squads to 6 men but that seems a bit like weakening the main force. I'd be buying something like a medic or an MMG which isn't that effective. A sniper would be thematic but I see opinions on them are mixed. Not using Light Mortars or AT Rifles because it's late war.

Thematic but effective is what I'm going for. Wagnerian Forest Jäger Kamfgruppe.

Feedback appreciated 👍🏻 Is 14 OD too low?

I know myself, if i paint a squad of 10/20 infantry i will be burned out and I wont paint another squad for weeks or months... So I decided to paint the whole army in one tedious go but oh boy am I happy right now to be done with all this infantry. Now I only need to do my tanks.

General Discussion French Unit Suggestions

I was already leaning towards collecting French and the national rules have definitely sold me as an artillery fan.

That being said, what in your opinion are some standout French units and models? Also thoughts on the new starter army with no armor included as well as the FFL platoon?

Currently play US and Brits and typically find myself building light to no armor British lists so I feel as though the French are right in my wheelhouse.

General Discussion Churchill Variant Ranking

How would you all rank the various Churchill versions? I personally love the tank and want to use it a lot but have no idea which ones are good/bad. I’m definitely eyeing the AVRE because of how silly it is but aside from that one, how do the others rank in comparison to one another?

M4A2 Shermans of the 27th Armoured Brigade’s, 13/18th Hussars. Some armoured support for my South Lancashire regiment infantry, a few days into the Normandy campaign. Allied logistics may have been good, but always cases of crews “living of the land” hence the chicken on the rear, for that nights tea

List Building Need review on my list.

I am playing US Army, and I will play against my friend this weekend, who plays German.

He loves tanks, and I know he owns a Tiger and likes to use it.

Do I need to prepare to destroy it, or should I aim to have lots of infantry that can capture points?

Here is my list:
The light anti-tank gun would be used against his half-track.
Can change the scout car for a sherman.
