Hello!

Im looking to buy my first sand boa and I'm looking to adopt a sand boa in the NC / SC (preferably near the Charlotte or Columbia area).

Any breeders near by?

Quail/Chick/Duck feeding in place of Rodents

Post image
23 Upvotes

I purchased my Dumeril's Boa in February of 26. He was severely underfed from the breeder (breeder claims it was a maintenance diet). At 2.5 years old, he was 163 grams and a right at 20". About as big around as a thumb. The first few weeks were nerve racking because he would NOT eat mice or rat no matter the size, or feeding method. Tried shoebox, tried leaving it there, yada yada nothing worked. A few people on this page suggested quail and POOF he eats like a machine now. I keep trying mice/rat every now and then, even tried scenting them with the quail but no go. That's fine, I'm fortunate to have a local breeder who raises them specifically for snake/reptile. She also breeds chicks and ducks.
My boa has been eating day old quail. Started 1 at a time, he's up to 4 at a time. I just fed him his first week quail old last night.

My question is, with quail obviously not having the same nutritional content as a mouse/rat, what should I be feeding him qty wise? Is it still the 10% rule? After 8 months, he is now at 400 grams and about 22". I also have chicks and ducks also. I know ducks are fattier, but didn't know if that was a good thing or bad thing to try and get this little guy to grow.

I don't want to power feed the guy, but I also don't want to stunt his growth too much with what growing time he has left. I got the Dumeril's boa to hopefully get something a little bigger than my male ball python, but not as big as a BCC or BCI.

Thanks!

I think absolutely everyone needs a pepper in their life 😂 she has only been with me one week now and I plan to try and ease her into handling for necessary things like health checks and cleaning tanks and such in a few weeks after a meal and some settling in. She will track you throughout the room, strike when you walk by, etc.. curious to see what kind of progress can be made with her! She is absolutely beautiful and is fun to watch explore when she isn't busy hunting you through the glass.

I'm sorry for the poor photos but I'm curious as to just what my new baby is. She has the saddles like a bci/bi but has the eyelashes like markings like a bcc/bc.

She's currently in a small quarantine tank and will be getting moved into a proper enclosure once I know she's 100% good to go. I come from the ball python and colubrid side of snakes so any and input is welcome so I can provide her the best care.

I want a second opinion on if my boa is overweight? And how often should I feed him. He’s currently on a 10 day schedule with just one large mouse.

Normal behavior?

New to BCI, so please excuse my ignorance. Just want to make sure I’m doing this gorgeous fella justice.

Going on week 4 in his new home with me. He is in a 4x2x2 PVC. Warm side is 85-86, cool side 79-82. Various natural and plastic hides large and small, ropes and sky hides. He has eaten three times here now. But he is staying burrowed almost in the same spot for extended periods of time.

I’ve read that this can be normal nervous behavior, but I have also read that I could be failing him miserably. Any thoughts or help is greatly appreciated!

Has two meanings: Boa constrictor occidentalis and Best Constrictor Objectively.

PS, he was fresh out of the shipping box and a bit chilly. That’s why his tongue was flicking slowly. He’s settling in beautifully, already having taken his first meal with great enthusiasm. Active, alert, and handsome as heck.

Hi, everyone ive posted before with my first boa.

I've been keeping my boy around 84-86f(amibient) all day in his warm side with day time 91f basking spot on his cork log. And 77-82 cool side( I try to keep it below 80)

My question is are the good temps even during digestion or should it be higher during this time? Or higher in general?

Help finding Light Guards

Hi I’m working on setting up a pvc enclosure and my plan is to use lights that would require some type of guard. I have everything so far the only thing I cannot find is a guard. I’m looking at an alternative to the Arcadia Lampguard 26”.

Any direction would be appreciated. right now it’s to fabricate my own I would prefer not to as I am probably over building it increasing the cost.

This guy was given to a friend of mine as a motley jungle. I can't shake the feeling that there's something else, especially with how light his overall coloration is, and moreso, how chocolatey all the usually black patterning is. Any help would be great.

Found this monster piece of coffee tree wood at the Chico Reptile show this weekend. I haven't seen him use it yet but I'm sure he appreciates the new area he can climb. Its the most ive spent kn wood so far.

Other picks of him are him climbing around a clothes drying rack. I absolutely recommend it for outside of tank enrichment if you're looking for ideas!

Not to be dramatic, but I feel like I left a piece of my SOUL behind today with this IMG Motley baby. I had to physically give all my payment methods to my friend so that I wouldn’t buy him. 🫠

(…I got their business card. I might still buy him lol)
