Discussion / Question Some band recommendations to lighten the mood.

Hey guys, with the obvious events that have happened I imagine, like me, many of you are searching for new bands to check out. These are in no particular order and these are just bands I think black midi fans will enjoy, not all of them sound similar to black midi though. For each band I will give a few of my favorite songs from them.

King Crimson (Prog Rock) : Neurotica, Larks Tongues in Aspic, Lament

Primus (Experimental / Prog Rock) : Is it Luck?, Jerry Was a Race Car Driver, Mr Krinkle

Angine De Poitrine (Math Rock / Microtonal) : Yor Zarad, Fabienk, Mata Zyklek

Gevende (Prog Rock / Avant Garde) : Sermest, Refik

HENGE (Electronic Rock / Prog Rock / Psychedelic Rock) : DNA, Indigo Dust, Get Outta Ma House

Hesse Kassel (Post Punk, Post Rock) : Postparto, Pornomiseria

Injury Reserve (Experimental Hip Hop) : Superman That, Footwork in a Forest Fire

Lightning Bolt (Noise Rock / Experimental Rock) : Dead Cowboy, Assassins, 2 Morro Morro Land

Sprain / Shearling (Noise Rock / Post Rock) : Motherfucker I Am Both, Man Proposes God Disposes, God or Whatever You Call It

Squid (Post Punk / Experimental Rock) : Peel St, Devil’s Den, Green Light

Frank Zappa (Prog Rock / Experimental Rock / Jazz Fusion (The list goes on)) : Peaches En Regalia, City of Tiny Lites, Son of Mr Green Genes

YHWH Nailgun (???) : Tear Pusher, Magazine (Whole Album)

Touchdown Jesus (Prog Rock, Jazz Fusion) : Four Grand, New Swang, Cities

Live Recording/Radio Session Front of crowd photos from Geordie Greep's Vancouver show on October 8th @ The Pearl

As I've heard, this is also his last public appearance as of yet. With all the context, it's also very eerie to see the empty band set-up behind him... Truly sends a message.

I want to be clear, i'm posting this for those curious to see what it looked like from the very front of the crowd (directly below the stage), for documentation purposes only. I absolutely condemn Greep's actions, and fully support the victim's & band's decision in calling out his incredibly disappointing behaviour in full. This is just a piece of music history I was able to watch unfold in real time, in front of my own eyes.

Discussion / Question Would You See Greeps Backing Band Without Greep?

I loved that band so much; the way everyone plays off of each other was brilliant, and I would be really upset to see those guys never play together again. I would kill to see them play without Greep. I know Eden and Cameron are songwriters, and they could cover some Latin standards with Santiago.

"Audio and video cobbled together as best as possible from multiple audience recordings. We all know what happened at the show. One of the most devastating versions of this song ever recorded, knowing the context. Audio quality gets significantly better a few minutes in."

The last performance of The Magician for the foreseeable future. It's like watching an empire fall in real time. There may be more full songs from this show at some point, but this is the only one for now.

He's completely right, Geordie needs to take accountability and put down the booze indefinitely before he hurts another person like this.

Discussion / Question How to learn from this as a (hu)man

TL:DR = How can fans of GG learn from the events of this week and move forward?

I would like to ask for some input from those who have been following the events of the past few days - specifically on how men can grow from their mistakes, understand misogyny that has been internalised since they were young, and help their brothers do better. I was deeply impressed by the closing remarks of "Laura" in the Paste article, which are:

"This is not to say you’re a bad person if you’ve ever made a woman uncomfortable. Misogyny is deeply rooted in all of us, women included, and benefits no one. This is not to shame men for being raised to think this way, but to ask: how can we unlearn? How can we do better, be better? Almost every man has made a woman uncomfortable in some way or another, whether he meant to or not. Shame gets us nowhere. But I urge you to ask yourself when you crossed a line with a woman. When have you messed up and done wrong? Intentionally or not. Think, reflect, and try to do just a little bit better.”

All of this has had me reflecting on times I've been thoughtless and driven by ego, when I was a big drinker and using sex as a source of validation, and not really giving much thought to how my sleeping around and bragging made the women in my life feel. I have certainly made mistakes, I've hurt people, and I still live with shame and regret.

I'm lucky enough to be a few years sober after some serious therapy, and I'm now in a committed relationship. I remember how much I connected with The New Sound when it came out during my early sobriety. Through humour and creativity, the album helped me identify parts of my behaviour that I wanted to leave behind. I hoped it would start a movement of more character driven songwriting, the exploration of "the line between good and bad that passes through every human heart".

What I'd like to ask is, as someone who's been disappointed but not necessarily surprised by the events of this week, what can be learned from what's happened? How do we deal with artists who have inspired us showing a side that lets us down? Is there any reading materials or tools for men who want to ask themselves about consent, body autonomy or misogyny? I need there to be a better answer to all this than "all men are awful", to quote GG.

I'd like to give respect to the victim and Cameron Campbell for their statements and bravery. I also hope that GG can step away, do the work, and maybe in 5-10 years he could put his talents to work with something honest, vulnerable and reflective on what he's (hopefully) learned from all this.

peace

Discussion / Question i was at the vancouver show, and i'm still rattled by the audience behaviour.

i just need to get this off my chest as someone who was there when everything happened, and as a sexual assault survivor, not just some disappointed fan. hope that's alright.

this man came onstage, admitted to what was at the time acknowledged to be at the very LEAST sexual misconduct, and couldn't even get through his full statement without people cheering him on. in the videos going around, you can hear someone go "WOO!" literally while he is talking about his actions, and i think that speaks volumes to how much some people actually care about victims.

i don't know if anyone recorded some of the follow-up stuff too, but when informed that his bandmates wouldn't be joining him, several audience members volunteered to climb onstage and play with him.

i had to leave the venue or i think i would've had a panic attack. i really hope that with everything that has since come out, the people who cheered this man on mid-statement and fell over themselves trying to get his attention are taking a good hard look at themselves.

i also hope the same for the victim's "friend" who i'm hearing handed out those flyers without her consent. i've been in her shoes; i know how deeply violating it is.

my heart is with the victim and anyone else personally affected by this whole mess.

Discussion / Question Well...any new music recommendations?

It's 1000000000% over. The New Sound is, to me at least, utterly unlistenable given what happened. It had previously been my absolute favorite album of all time and something I had listened to almost daily, so does anyone have any recommendations to fill in that spot? Pretty much all of my buddies are metalheads, so finding something close to Greep's specific style of Jazz fusion has been a little hard. The closest I could get was BCNR, which are pretty good, but still not quite what I'm looking for.

here’s a little improv part from The Magician. As unfortunate as this situation was, the show was amazing. For lack of a better word it was very intimate and further solidified my respect for Geordie as a musician.
I have a couple of videos of full songs including the last 7 mins of possibly the best Magician performance from this angle if anyone wants em dm me :)

edit: here’s the google drive to all recordings cause i didn’t imagine as much messages lol
