Bringing home a blind cat today, and advice?

He had a double enoculation two months ago, so that's how long he's been blind. He had really bad infection when the foster agency picked him up.

I already have two cats, and I'll make sure to take the steps to introduce them, but this is my first time around a blind cat

Edit: This post is still surprisingly active, so I thought I'd post an update.

The blind cat is doing well and we ended up naming him Mimir. He's got two cat brothers and he loves sitting in the window hammocks when the sun is on them. He's a fat little guy that is sweet sometimes and a brat others, but we love him.

I'll post some pics in the comments.

Mouse followed his seeing brother up to the window, but is still learning how to come back down. I really wanted to help him down but I know he needs to learn on his own. This is his second time trying to come down, the first time he fell behind the TV stand 😭. He is such a BRAVE little guy

Pacing in blind cats. Is it a sign of stress?

I always thought my cat was checking the perimiter of his territory by pacing from corner to corner and listening for changes. I saw a post some days ago and they thought it might be boredom, I googled it and Dr. Google says my cat has anxiety.

I thought about it for some time and I realized my cat did start pacing more again after I went back to work after 3 weeks time off. He didnt even greet my friend who he usually loves to greet and cuddle.... Also when I open the balcony he often paces for hours on the balcony and starts rolling over to spread his sent a lot.

Whats your experience? It is really a sign of something wrong? Am I just worrying to much? I love my little guy and I dont want him to be stressed. :(

My blind kitty Milu can open doors (not this door though)

You guys loved my post about my two blind kitties Milu and Ravi so here is Milu trying to open this door, it has never worked, does she try every day anyway? Absolutely. does she actually want to be on the other side? absolutely not (my roommates cats live there and she doesn’t like them) she is actually able to open other doors successfully though, she is super smart and can open almost anything, well except for that particular door as it requires quite a bit of strength to open and she cannot even get the handle down with her body weight. Also since she is so cute I added a picture of her in the hammock. (She climbed in herself)

I also want to add her doing that isn’t really a great sign, often she does it to get my attention or when she is bored. When she was an outdoor Kitty with other doors she could let herself outside, so that’s where she learnt it and picked up the habit. But with this door she mostly does it to get my attention as she wants to be fed I think (even it isn’t actually food time)

Update on Runa: resident cat introduction, and peeing on my bed. looking for advice!

Hi everyone! I shared Runa here a while ago, so I wanted to give you all an update and ask for some advice because I’m honestly getting a little desperate trying to figure this out.
Runa is now fully integrated into the household and has free access to the whole apartment. I have another cat, and although they’re coexisting much better now, my resident cat still hisses at Runa if she gets too close. Nothing too unusual for a slow introduction, I think.

One important bit of context: my apartment only has one bedroom, and when Runa first arrived, she stayed in my bedroom while I gradually introduced them. Once they started spending time together freely, Runa became much more interested in hanging out in the living room, playing, and even sleeping on the sofa. Meanwhile, I’ve gone back to sleeping in my bed with my resident cat, who has always loved sleeping with me.

I’ve been wondering whether the peeing might be related to territory or scent, since my bed and bedroom used to be Runa’s main space. When she first arrived, she peed on my bed. I cleaned the mattress myself with an upholstery-cleaning machine, and then, about a week ago, I had it professionally deep-cleaned with an industrial machine as well.

About a week after the cats started sharing the apartment, Runa had an episode where she peed on the bed three days in a row. My vet thinks this is behavioral rather than a functional/medical issue, although I’m still keeping an eye on it.

Before I went away for a few days, I covered the mattress with puppy pads, then a waterproof mattress protector, and finally the sheets. I also have a FELIWAY Optimum diffuser plugged in in the bedroom. While I was away, she seemed to do pretty well. I’m not sure whether the puppy pads helped because of their slightly plasticky texture, or whether something else made the difference.
When I came back, she went about a week without peeing on the bed, even after the professional cleaning. But today, I put some pillows back on the bed, and she peed on one of them.

These were pillows she’d peed on before, but I’d already had them washed and hygienically treated. I’ve also noticed that she rubs herself against this particular pillow a lot, almost as if she’s trying to leave her scent on it. I wonder whether there might still be some residual urine smell that I can’t detect, or whether this is more about territory, comfort, or stress from the change in her environment.

For those of you with blind cats, or anyone who’s dealt with inappropriate peeing during a multi-cat introduction:

Could this be related to territory or scent, especially because my bedroom used to be Runa’s safe space?

Has anyone had success with any other strategies?

I love both my cats and really want to help Runa feel safe while keeping my bed usable. I’m open to suggestions because I’m running out of ideas. Thank you so much!

Question Holiday planning for my sweet boy

Thumbnail

Hi everyone, I'm new here because my FIV+ sweet boy recently went blind

I'd love to see my family for the holidays (I'm in NJ and they're in FL) but I'm struggling with what to do with him.

Ideally I'd love to have a home sitter but I don't have anyone here who can stay over with him and I'm really uncomfortable with a stranger sleeping here and giving him his daily meds properly.

I found a vet boarding service but that of course means he'll be out of his comfort zone. They'll isolate him because of his FIV (he doesn't like other cats so maybe that's good?), and it's not an overnight service so no one will be there after 7pm

He's affectionate and even more clingy since his eye troubles. I can stay home with him and it will save me money but that will be my second holiday in a row without seeing family.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated, I'm really at loss on what's best for the both of us.

Cat tax paid happily 😊

So my cat went blind due to cancer, while there won’t be positive outcome, she’s still active.
How could I play with her? Sometimes she just wander from corner to corner like she’s bored, and I don’t know what to do.

My (one eyed) boy Stevie: 50% cutie patootie, 50% crazy. Wondering if he would actually let me put a pirate patch on him (and where I could even get one) 😂🎃

According to the girl I adopted him from, he mostly sees shadows from the eye he still has. But that never stopped him from chasing flies (and my other cat Mila) around the house and being a velcro cat.

Our FIP fighters— Muning (blind cat) and Forbie have become very picky with their food, and we're running out of the only wet foods they'll eat with their medicine!

NOTE: We are verified user on r/Straycats and r/rescuecats. You can check r/PawsitiveGuardians for more updates.

Hey everyone, quick update from our blind rescue cat and her friend.

Our FIP warriors— Muning and Forbie are currently in the middle of their treatment, but they’ve developed quite an attitude about their meals. 😹 The only wet foods they'll reliably eat and the ones we use to help them take their daily GS pills without a fight are getting harder to keep in stock. 🥲

This is a huge priority for us because Forbie, one of our rescues, cannot be stressed under any circumstances as her asthma is easily triggered. Making mealtime smooth and struggle-free keeps her safe and breathing comfortably.

We are hoping to find a few wonderful sponsors to help us restock so their treatment routine stays smooth and stress-free:

• Zealandia Canned Food: ₱120 (\~$1.91 USD) / can

• Petsup Real Meat Pouches: ₱989 (\~$15.75 USD) for a bundle of 30 pouches

Thank you for reading and for helping us keep these fighters strong! 💛🐱

Question Blind kitten whiskers breaking off

Thumbnail

Looking to see if anyone has had a similar experience or any advice on my 3 month old kitten Moonie. For context I adopted him from the shelter around 8 weeks old (lots of whiskers I’ll include pictures). He was already blind from a previous infection when I got him but his eyes got infected a couple weeks into having him he needed to get a double enucleation. He’s had some complications since then and is still in the process of recovering. He’s on his third antibiotic currently and just came back from the vet today where they said his eye is healing great and I made sure to bring up his whiskers because they look like they’re breaking off and they have no idea why. I’m wondering if anyone has experienced this. He is FIV+ and I know they said it could be the mom’s antibodies and to retest but given how long it’s been taking his body to fight off the infections I think he may have it. Also his whiskers are not cut!!!! He is also the only cat in my house so if any one has had a similar experience or any advice I’d really appreciate it!

Question Are they playing?

Thumbnail

Hello! The first cat is Zo, my blind kitten. Second pic is Zuri who is not blind. I adopted Zo about 4 months ago and she’s 2-3 years old. They seem to get along fine most of the time but when Zo tries to play with Zuri, Zuri will hiss, growl, lower her ears, and get on her back. She doesn’t bite or hit her with claws but everything else makes me think she’s fighting while Zo is playing. Zo doesn’t seem to care much and will initiate these plays/fights despite hearing Zuri growing and hissing. She is silent during the squabble and also does not bite or hit with claws. She seems more confident. The squabbles are only for a few seconds at time then they move on like normal. I’m just not sure if this is something I should break up or let them do? They will still nap in the same spots together, don’t fight over food, and every once in a while I’ll catch Zo grooming Zuri. I’ve never had a blind cat nor a young cat before, nor have I had 2 cats at once before. So this kind of behavior is all very new to me! Does anyone have thoughts on this?

I foster failed Marcel in June after his enucleation and he is just the best kitty. His paperwork says he’s a domestic shorthair but he’s turned out to be a very fluffy guy. He loves to be held like a baby and his favorite toys are pom Pom balls. He still doesn’t jump, but he’s a climber. He tells me he wants to be held by trying to climb up my legs lol. He also lays incredibly flat like he goes boneless. I love him with all my heart🫶

The last pic was when I first started fostering him😭 he was so small

Can anyone share their surgery stories?

Thumbnail

Hi😊 I am the owner of two purebred Burmese and my family recently went through a rough time with my oldest. He got an injury to his eye (don't know how) and we spent about a month trying to make it better. We finally got closure last week by an eye specialist that we could try a surgery to keep what little vision he has left, but his eye could burst by just jumping from his scratching post. Second option was to remove his eye. He just had it done 3 days ago and we just think he looks a bit "rough" because they shaved his fur. Does anyone have pictures of how their kitties looked right at surgery compared to when their fur came back? I love my little teddy bear and just want to hear from other fellow owners what they experienced❤️

Medical Questions my blind girl always has blood in her nose

Thumbnail

female 2 yrs, adopted at 3 months old with full double enucleation. she had one underdeveloped eye (left) and a severe infection in the other eye. sadly, the adoption center my wife and i got her from isn't known for being very good, and they botched her first surgery. she went in for a follow up surgery at 6 months because her left eye never stopped leaking blood. that surgery ALSO didn't work very well. she has been evaluated by our own vet who said the leaky eye isn't detrimental to her health, she most likely has a duct somewhere in there and a small hole that fluid and blood drain out of. she said to be careful of yeast infections so we keep it extra clean and check it daily. but i really want to know if that has something to do with her odd nosebleeds. she always seems to have tiny, dried, dark spots of blood around her nostrils. sometimes she cleans it off, which is how we know they are not just markings. i never, ever see fresh red blood in her nose, same with her eyes. only dark red crusty blood. could this be related to the ducts being left inside her eyes? she was at the vet recently and our vet said she was doing amazing, bloodwork and everything looked normal. does anyone else have the nose blood thing going or know what it could be related to? we have two other cats with single eye enucleations and they have no oozing, no blood leakage, and no bloody noses.

Just wanted to share my lovely blind boy, Keith! He is the smartest kitty i know. You wouldn't even realize he has no eyes with how well he navigates his surroundings. I find him on top of our kitchen cabinets sometimes! I don't even think my seeing cats know how to get up there. He will be 4 next year. He has truly been a wonderful part of my life. And I was originally told he would be a hassle to deal with. Might not know where the litter boxes are, might not know where the food is. He knows everything like any other kitty would :] and he sure loves his crinkle toys. Carries them around and cries until someone comes to see him!
