How we shot our latest Apple Immersive Film for Ford (17-min BTS & Production Breakdown)

Hi everyone, Antoine from altitude.101 here.

We just wrapped up our latest Apple Immersive project for Ford, shot with the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive. Because shooting for spatial/immersive formats comes with a unique set of creative and technical hurdles, we put together a 17-minute behind-the-scenes documentary covering the entire production from prep to post.

In the video, we break down:

  • How we approached storytelling and framing for an immersive format
  • Camera rigging and movement (especially around vehicles)
  • Managing lighting and hiding the crew on set
  • Our post-production and spatial workflow

The final film is currently playing all week at the Paris Motor Show ("Mondial de l’Auto"), and watching people experience it in the headset for the first time has been incredible.

Since there are still relatively few deep-dives on Apple Immersive workflows out there, we wanted to share as much of our process as possible. Happy to answer any questions you might have about the shoot, the gear, or the workflow!

BMPCC4K and SSD Storage

Just got a PCC4K off of eBay and was hoping to be able to use a nvme drive in a usb-c enclosure as storage. Tried formatting it as ntfs and exfat, but it doesn't show up in the storage menu on the camera. Is there anything I can do to get it to show up and be usable? Or what are the drive requirements to be able to use an SSD as storage?

Can't get Video Assist 12G to recognize BRAW from Sony FX6 (HDMI)

As the title says - have the newest firmware for both the 12G 5" Video Assist and my Sony FX6.

RAW (HDMI) output set on FX6 (v6.01 firmware), switch 12G VA to "BRAW" codec... and it says something like "Codec Not recognized or supported" in the top left corner.

Any suggestions on what I might be missing here?

*EDIT: tried connecting to an FX3 with newest v7x firmware that has BRAW option, and was able to get the monitor to recognize BRAW out of the camera with the same HDMI cable.

So seems to be something to do with the FX6

ATEM Mini Extreme vs Extreme ISO

Hey

Has anyone perhaps tried swapping the firmware on a BMD ATEM Mini Extreme switcher for the ATEM Mini Extreme ISO firmware? Could this be a viable solution for enabling ISO recording without buying a new switcher?

Production Camera 4K files not working. Need help!

I am currently editing a project that has two large files from a Production Camera 4 K that behave quite weirdly.

When first opening them a few months ago, I already had issues. One file shows the first few frames and a bit of audio, then stopped and played static noise. The other one didn’t open at all. When opening them in DaVinci (newest Studio Version) they showed as „Media Offline“. The person who recorded them said, they work completely normally for them.
Somehow a few hours later, both files worked inside DaVinci.

Now revisiting the project, nothing works. I can’t open the files with any program. VLC plays static, no image. QT-Player won’t open them. DaVinci shows missing media.

There is a smaller file, around 5 seconds that has been accidentally recorded. Funnily enough those 5 seconds work just fine. So it might not the be the codec after all, maybe the files are too big? But I have never had such issues with 500gb B-Raw or MP4s.

One file is 200gb (~ 2h) and the other 70gb (~ 45min) large. The Codec is Linear PCM, Apple ProRes 422 HQ. I tried loading them from an external HDD and an external SSD on a MacBook Studio 2019 with MacOS Sonoma 14.6.1.

Can anyone help or has anyone had similar issues?

BMD UltraStudio Mini Monitor 12G and M1 Max Chip

I went to BMD support and Apple support, both said their stuff is working properly.

I have a 2022 Mac Studio running 3x USB-C to HDMI display adapters (4k@30), one HDMI out (2k@30) and then one BMD UltraStudio (US for short) as mentioned in the title. The Mac supports this many monitors/pixels but I have an issue with desktop video not detecting the US under a specific circumstance.

If I have no thunderbolt ports plugged in, then I plug in the US first, it populates in desktop video. Then I can plug in my USB-c display adapters and see my displays. If I reboot while it’s all wired and working, then the US doesn’t show up in desktop video. If I unplug all thunderbolt devices and start with the US, it again works properly.

I am well below the power consumption and bandwidth limits of the ports, which makes sense because it all works fine once it does populate.

Any one have tip, tricks, or trouble shooting ideas? Thanks internet big brain!

BMPCC 6K FF — Questions about low-light noise, gyro stabilisation and workflow

Hi everyone!

I'm considering buying the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K Full Frame. I really love the image quality, colour science, highlight rendering and overall cinematic look, but I have a few concerns before making the investment.

I'm a professional videographer working on commercials, interviews, documentaries, reports and events. My work involves both controlled shoots and run-and-gun situations.

I'd really appreciate some real-world feedback on a few things:

1. Low-light performance and noise

How does the camera perform in low-light situations? I know it has Dual Native ISO 400/3200, but how clean is the footage at ISO 3200 in practice? Is noise manageable without heavy denoising, especially when shooting with an f/2.8 lens?

2. Handheld shooting and gyro stabilisation

For those shooting handheld, how do you deal with micro-jitters, particularly at longer focal lengths? How effective is the gyro data for stabilisation in DaVinci Resolve, and does it produce reliable results in real-world footage?

3. Fast turnaround and proxies

For occasional projects where the final output is only 1080p social media content, could I record BRAW and H.264 proxies simultaneously, send the editor only the proxy files, and have them edit and export directly from those proxies in Premiere Pro? The editor wants to minimise storage usage, so transferring the large BRAW files isn't ideal.

Also, since the proxies have a flat-looking image, would applying a conversion LUT in Premiere Pro be enough to get natural-looking colours without additional colour grading?

4. BRAW compression and storage

Which BRAW compression settings do you use in real-world professional work? I'm looking for a good balance between image quality and manageable file sizes.

I'd especially appreciate feedback from people using this camera for actual client work rather than controlled tests.

Thanks!

Need confirmation on BM wireless camera workflow

Hey everyone... got a request to figure out how to have an iPhone follow a tour of people throughout a business that's spread out over 3 floors and I'm trying to nail down a workflow. Need someone to confirm that this is the proper workflow, using BM tools:

  • Use iPhone running BM Camera App as wireless/roaming camera
  • Connect iPhone to WiFi network, connect BM Camera App to BM Cloud Router
  • Set BM Cloud Router up on studio computer (running switcher), configure BM Camera App as source and BM Streaming Decoder 4k as destination
  • Connect BM Streaming Decoder 4k via HDMI/SDI to ATEM Television Studio 4K8 switcher
  • Confirm/test signal stability/latency/etc.

Is that the basic workflow? I understand there will be latency, some minor investment in software/cloud access/etc and there's thing to refine (like not using a public wifi network, etc) but aside from the $800 for the hardware decoder... is that the general gist of the workflow? Is that what it (basically) takes to use the BM Camera App as a wireless video source to be controlled from the 4K8 switcher?

If anyone has ANY firsthand experience with this workflow, it'd be HUGE to hear from you... I'm kind of under the gun to provide information for the powers-that-be, of course.

Ultrastudio 4k Mini help

Hello

So my ultrastudio 4k mini decided to brick itself. Desktop video setup isn't recognizing it. Even with the 12.4 version. A few days ago everything was fine

I already did the terminal force update.

Thing is, the screen is lit up BUT it's not reacting to any of the buttons I press - menu, audio, video.

Is it fucked? Can I do anything at all?

I don't have any other thunderbolt cables or other Mac computers.

Cage recommendation for PYXIS 12K - leaning towards Kondor Blue over Tilta

I just purchased a PYXIS 12K, and met up with a friend of mind who shoots with a 6K. I originally had the Tilta Camera Cage Pro Kit on my list to get as I'm looking to build my kit, but he recommended Kondor Blue instead, especially for its modularity.

I was trying to do a bunch of reading on Reddit, and it seems like others agree that Kondor Blue is better, though it seems like it would involve piecing together a cage kit vs. having one mostly put together (which was my original draw to the Tilta kit).

  • On this thread someone said: "I have the Tilta one too, but for me it has a lot of flaws. One being the V Mount plate is directly connected to the camera, which Blackmagic themselves don’t recommend. ... I believe it’s because the power isn’t regulated from the Vlocks & the extensions, so any overdraw could find its way through the battery connectors and fry the camera. It’s happened to quite a few FX6 bodies, and that’s why there’s a warning sticker on the Tilts battery adaptor saying they aren’t liable if there’s any damage. Not the most confidence inducing!"
  • Folks on this thread also had some mixed feelings about the cage.

Anyone have experience with either cages willing to share their thoughts/experiences?

Thanks!

Treating Myself to an Early Birthday Gift: BMCC 6K Full Frame to Complement My FX3. Would Love Some Advice!

Post image
64 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

Decided to treat myself to an early birthday present and picked up the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K Full Frame (L-Mount)!

I'm just a hobbyist who really enjoys photography and filmmaking. I currently shoot with a Sony FX3, but I've been wanting to explore the Blackmagic ecosystem for a while now, especially BRAW, the color science, and the overall image rendering.

I'm particularly drawn to a softer, more organic, almost dreamlike look.

I'm planning to use the BMCC 6K for more intentional, planned shoots where I can take my time composing shots, lighting, and experimenting with color grading. That said, I'd also love to use it for some run-and-gun filmmaking.

A few questions for those who have experience with this camera:

1. Lens recommendations?

I've been looking at the Panasonic Lumix S PRO 24-70mm f/2.8. From what I've seen and heard, the rendering is beautiful, and the focal range seems incredibly versatile. Ideally, I'd like to start with one really good lens before expanding into primes. Would you recommend it, or is there something else worth considering? I'm especially interested in lenses with character rather than an overly clinical look.

2. Autofocus performance after the latest update?

I've heard Blackmagic has made improvements to autofocus through recent firmware updates. For those who have updated, how has your experience been? Is continuous autofocus reliable enough for casual handheld shooting or run-and-gun situations? I'm coming from the FX3, so I know my expectations need to be different.

3. General tips for a newcomer?

Any must-have accessories, recommended settings, rigging suggestions, or things you wish you knew when you first started shooting with this camera?

I'm excited to learn the system and experiment with a different filmmaking workflow. Would really appreciate any advice or experiences you guys are willing to share!

Thanks in advance!

Dysfonctionnement v 21.1.1 speed editor

Bonjour,

Best V Mount Battery for BMPCC6K Pro

I bought a used BMPCC6K Pro and I believe the internal battery support or whatever is shot as it only stays on for a few mins before shutting off. I've replaced the batteries and chargers but with no success. Stays on when plugged into the wall with the d(?) Port. The weipu or whatever.

I know there are some older posts here about the best v-mount battery for the 6k Pro and was wondering what the general concensus was.

I was looking at the Core swx powerbase edge as an option.

Please let me know what the best options are under 150~usd. Thanks!

Do fiber cable transmit tally information?

Hey everyone. I'm currently remodeling my recording studio and wanted to equip it with a multicam recording/streaming rig.

Since I already have a couple of blackmagic cameras I'm thinking of getting an atem mini pro and staying in the blackmagic ecosystem.

My question is:

The HDMI cables would have to be somewhat long, so I'll be using fiber HDMI. But I want the musicians to know which camera to look to.

So would a directional fiber HDMI cable also carry the information needed to use the tally lights on the cameras?

Thank you for the help
