Resources Just passed the exam- here’s my take on BDS vs BAS

I used Reddit to choose my study methods and wound up starting with bds. As I was studying it seemed everyone was saying that BAS was more like the test so I used them as well. With BDS it was sometimes wordy but it did a really good job of covering every possible topic on the exam. It made me really prepared since the questions were very similar format and the test was a little less wordy so it felt easier.

With BAS, I watched every single video and a lot of them were very surface level and did not cover a lot of topics. Their mock exam questions were also not clear at times and I did not find them similar to the test. Sometimes the lack of a comma really changed a question so I had to guess what they were asking. I think BAS would have been nice if the questions were more objective and if the videos were more thorough. The only advantage of BAS is that you get to listen to lectures instead of having to read the information. If you do BDS the way they recommend ( where you don’t answer the questions unless you know the answer, and click on the hint button when you don’t) it is good at teaching because they were very good at explaining the answers. But again- it’s a ton of reading if you complete the whole thing which I did about half.
( I also tried the study notes aba app for a short time but it wasn’t my thing )

Vent A rant.

Someone anonymously posted the attached question on Facebook. I find it atrocious for several reasons, but the comment I made was, "if you did the assessment, don't you already know? This reads as incompetence." My comment got deleted and I was banned from the group for two weeks because it was "mean."

Do you know what's mean?

Assigning a BCBA who made the attached comment to work with any client, regardless of age. Their comment raises serious questions about their ability to conduct a thorough assessment, analyze the data, and use those findings to develop clinically appropriate, individualized goals. These are fundamental responsibilities of a clinician, and failing to meet them does a disservice to both the child and their family.

Looking for a company based in California, or in pacific time zone that has a fully remote part-time position available. I'm a BCBA based in NY and am available to take on more clients. I can work early mornings to late evenings (10pm).

If this is a company you work for or you know a company that offers out of state employment, would love a referral. thanks!!

Discussion Question 2 part time jobs

Hey everyone,

My full time remote position is burning me out. My caseload is super high and I’m feeling like I can’t do it anymore. Has anyone quit a salaried job and gotten 2 part time hourly jobs? What did you think about it?

Vent How do I find a job as a behavior tech who competed the 40 hour training?

Hi everyone! I’m 18 years old and trying to start my career in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) as a Behavior Technician.

I recently completed SOAR Autism Center’s 40-hour RBT training and received my certificate. I also have approximately one year of volunteer experience supporting children, including children with autism.

I’ve applied to multiple ABA companies, but I’m struggling to get hired. Some employers never responded to my applications, and a couple of interviews didn’t lead to job offers.
I’m specifically hoping to gain clinical based experience so I can learn from experienced RBTs and BCBAs, develop my practical skills, and continue working toward my RBT certification.
I’m willing to learn and receive additional training. Ideally, I’d like to find an entry-level Behavior Technician position that accepts applicants without formal paid ABA experience and offers paid training or support with the remaining certification requirements. I’m located in South Jersey,
For those who have been in a similar situation:
How did you land your first clinic-based Behavior Technician job? Do clinics hire 18-year-olds who have completed the 40-hour training but haven’t obtained their RBT credential yet?

Advice Needed Counterfeit ABA Textbook?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I just started my M.S. program and just bought the 3rd edition ABA textbook, which was suspiciously cheaper than what it’s supposed to be. It was from smartbookdeal.com. Now I’m wondering if there’s any reason for concern, and if it makes sense to return it and buy from a more verified seller or store, which would be more expensive. Any chance all the content remains the same and it’s just a counterfeit copy? If paper quality is the only thing different I’ll take the trade off.

Discussion Question Are Remote BCBAs North Korea proof?

I was watching this documentary about how some remote IT jobs are occupied by North Koreans working on behalf of the Kim regime. Do yall think this would be harder to do for a BCBA role?

Advice Needed Any BCBA’s including yoga in their practice?

I’m a BCBA interested in developing a business providing neurodiversity affirming movement and yoga programming that integrates emotional regulation and social emotional learning. I would love to do small groups and push into school districts. I would love to connect with anyone who has done/wants to do something similar to bounce ideas and questions off of each other!

Vent So close to finishing my hours…

Is anyone else getting close to finishing their BCBA hours but feeling completely burnt out or just depleted.

I’m at the point where I can see the finish line, but some days I leave sessions feeling completely worn out. I have a client who engages in very intense tantrums, and while I understand that he’s having a hard time regulating and that his behavior isn’t personal, navigating those moments can still be incredibly exhausting.

I try really hard to approach my clients with empathy, patience, and understanding, but I’m also human. Some days, the intensity of the behaviors takes a lot out of me, and I find myself feeling mentally and emotionally drained afterward.

I care about my clients and the work that I do, but I’m realizing that understanding the function of a behavior and empathizing with a client doesn’t mean that experiencing it day after day isn’t hard.
I’m so close to finishing my hours, and I’m trying to push through, but some days I’m just tired. 😭 Can anyone else relate? How do you navigate burnout during this stage of your BCBA journey?

Advice Needed Seeking a BCBA mentor for self-pay business model . . .

I’m looking for a BCBA that operates a private practice sustained by self-pay clientele. I am most interested in parent training and clinical behavior analysis for parent-child relationship and partner relationship challenges. So far, all I’ve found are influencers who likely earn most of their income from social media or selling their product. If you’re willing to offer this service or can recommend someone, I’d greatly appreciate it.

Advice Needed New job growing pains

Hi everyone. I am having a hard time adjusting to my new bcba consult role at a school district. I am facing pretty high stake meetings with attorneys and advocates that get pretty uncomfortable. I know it’s part of the job, but the anticipatory anxiety of those meetings is getting in the way of me actually enjoying my day to day.
The problem I’m running into is that I’m truly pouring my heart into behavior programs and seeing progress, only for me to get ripped apart in meetings by these advocates.

Has anyone experienced this? How do you cope with not taking it personally? I’m debating switching districts but only started in August.

Advice Needed Recieved a note audit from previous company

Hi all!

I received a note audit from my previous company (I left two months ago) for notes dated almost a year ago - November 2025.

There’s about 5 I’ve being asked to correct and most of them are simple changes - my question is, based on the ethics code and my responsibilities, do I need to update these notes?

When they initially reached out, I thought it was for notes that were recent but this is almost a year ago and I’m not sure I feel comfortable updating notes from that long ago - the missing information is generally simple, like updating a check box here or there for participants.

But they updated the note formats for a lot of these and they’re wanting to change to the new format - this includes extra information that was not previously required at the time of the note. Which would mean adding in information for something that took place almost a year ago.

To be completely honest, I’ve been extremely busy and burnt out in my new role recently and I’m not sure I have the capacity to tackle these changes - obviously if there’s an ethical need to, I can and will, but k would really rather not. Is this my responsibility? Or should they have brought this to my attention in the 9 months I was employed with them ?

Discussion Question Fieldwork-School or Clinic?

Looking for seasoned advice. My local school district has a BCBA on staff and we are discussing them being my supervisor and me working as an interventionist for them. I also just signed on to Positive Behavior Supports. I see pros and cons to both but I'm wondering what your thoughts are? I love having a predictable schedule, one BCBA overseeing me, and structure. PBS is all in-home here and entirely virtual with a lot of chatter in groups saying it's difficult to get unrestricted with them.

I'd love for any thoughts to be shared before I drive myself mad with this decision lol.

Resources First try!

I recently passed the exam!

I used two ABA technology mocks and the understanding behavior mini mocks and understanding behavior mock exam 1.
I scored around 78-79% on ABA tech and 81% on understanding behavior.

I highly recommend ABA tech they have difficult questions similar to the exam and higher edit quality of questions to UB.

Good luck out there!

Advice Needed LCSW & BCBA simultaneously?

I’m interested in pursuing LCSW & BCBA.

I worked as a RBT while getting my BSW & I really loved it but I was so deep in my BSW and felt like the best option would be to continue with MSW > LCSW since the field is broader.

I had the itch to continue BCBA but I didn’t. Now I graduate with my MSW this December. I still plan to work towards my LCSW but I’m wondering if there are people out there who have done ABA cert/hours+ LCSW hours at the same time.

Also any recommendations on certificate programs. I’m looking for advanced programs if possible.

I’m hoping to finish aba cert & hours, sit for exam them begin LCSW studying and sit for exam the following year. Not sure if this is realistic or attainable lol.

Advice Needed Is becoming a BCBA worth it for a mom seeking a flexible career?

Hi everyone! I’m considering becoming a BCBA and would love some honest advice.

I have a Master of Health Administration (MHA) and currently serve as an Air Force officer in healthcare administration. I’m planning to leave the military and, as a soon-to-be mom, want a career with more flexibility—ideally part-time, remote, or school-schedule opportunities.

I worked as an ABA technician during undergrad and enjoyed it. I know BCBA responsibilities are different, but my experience leading teams and managing healthcare operations gives me confidence that I can learn the clinical and supervisory side.

The additional ABA coursework I’ve found would cost around $6,000. The most daunting part is completing the 1,500–2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork while raising a young child. I’d like to qualify before the 2032 eligibility changes so I can use my existing master’s rather than earn another degree.

My three main questions are:

Is becoming a BCBA worth it, and does it realistically offer the flexibility and work-life balance I’m looking for?

How did you find supervision and earn your fieldwork hours, especially unrestricted hours? If you did this part time or with children, how long did it take, and did you pay for supervision?

If BCBA isn’t a good fit for these goals, what other careers would you recommend given my psychology background, MHA, and healthcare leadership experience?

TL;DR: Soon-to-be mom leaving military healthcare administration, with an MHA and previous ABA technician experience. Considering BCBA coursework but concerned about completing fieldwork hours. Is the career worth it for flexibility, how did you complete supervision, and what alternatives would you recommend?
