If De Paula kept that hot streak into October, Ohtani would be benched.
17
u/ChrisKamanMyEye 6h ago
De Paula never went cold. He was productive all the way until he got demoted down to AAA when Shohei came off the IL.
27
u/YasielPuigsWeed 7h ago
De Paula has gotten on base in 2/3 October PA’s
He never went cold. If you add up his September and October PA’s he’s gotten on base a little over 50% of the time he’s gone to the plate.
This decision is based on Ohtani being Ohtani, not anything to do with De Paula

Way too small sample size. If Ohtani said it doesn’t bother him then I’d still take a slightly injured Ohtani.

Happy as a Brewers fan, sad as a baseball fan. Game 4 last year was one of the greatest things I've ever seen, and his ABs just look so diminished from what Ohtani should be. But also fuck the Dodgers, revenge sweep incoming let's fucking go.

Yeah, as a dodger fan I think Milwaukee wins this series. But it’s crazy how so many are acting like this series is over when a game hasn’t even been played in LA yet.

aside from two playoff games his stats in October are horrendous. small sample size will all due respect tho. he looks so lost against good pitching still. 47 game sample size. nevermind
64
u/YasielPuigsWeed 7h ago
He has an .870 career OPS in Postseason
2024 World Series was bad because he injured his shoulder on that steal and it screwed up his hitting, otherwise he’s been pretty good until this year (where injuries have him screwed up again)
6
u/theerrantpanda99 New York Yankees 5h ago
Judge also has a .822 career OPS in the postseason. But people will always remember the cold streaks more than the hot ones.
1
u/Outrageous-Opinions 4h ago
It's pretty obvious that teams target the superstars in the post season and it's up to the other players as they have more opportunities.
The reason why miggy ro was able to hit that homerun last world series is because they pitched to him because Ohtani was next.
-6
u/TooMuchPowerful Los Angeles Dodgers 6h ago
His 2025 wasn't great either, hitting sub-.150 going into Game 3 of the NLCS. His average is saved by the two games where he went nuclear: Game 4 of the NLCS (the 3-3 3x HR game) and Game 3 of the World series (4-4 with the 2 doubles and 2 HRs).
As bad as he looks now, he looked about as bad going into Games 3 and 4 for the NLCS last year.
21
u/joethecrow23 Cincinnati Reds 5h ago
Yah, if you don’t count the parts where he’s good, he’s actually pretty bad!
-3
u/TooMuchPowerful Los Angeles Dodgers 5h ago
I'm really just pointing out he has the ability to turn it on. He has in the past, just last year. Whether he can do so through these injuries, we can only hope. We'll find out soon enough.
-12
u/dmforjewishpager New York Yankees 6h ago
.677 minus those two games. Anyways both these numbers don’t mean shit just watch his at bat quality it’s pure shit.
5
u/YasielPuigsWeed 6h ago
Yeah we know he’s been bad this Postseason and we also know why so I dunno what you’re trying to say
He certainly hasn’t been a bad October player as a whole. Game 1 NLDS 2024 HR that may have changed the whole series, shredding the Mets in the 24 NLCS, greatest individual Postseason game performance ever in 25 NLCS, 1.278 OPS with 3 HR in 25 World Series, etc.
So far the only Postseason team that really managed to keep a healthy Ohtani at bay was the 25 Phillies who basically had a murderers row of lefty arms and got 2 Sanchez starts in 4 games because of the way the off days set up
6
u/ARDrummist American League 6h ago edited 4h ago
Bruh I swear it's always yankees fans who are on this. I think it's some weird Judge postseason cope (Ftr I think postseason stats in general are kind of dumb and too small of a sample to draw any meaningful conclusions).
3
u/YasielPuigsWeed 6h ago
Yeah I feel like Postseason perception is kind of a hybrid of stats and “moments” so to speak, with moments carrying more weight. If you have the big individual moments that contributed massively to winning series and titles then no one cares about the overall stats much.
Judge has never had his moment. He was actually very good last Postseason but they lost so it didn’t carry much weight.
-3
u/dmforjewishpager New York Yankees 6h ago
.677 career post in 47 games. health arguments aren’t gonna work
40
u/Zaphaze Los Angeles Dodgers 7h ago
Take away the 2024 World Series post game 2 where he tore his labrum and had to get shots in between innings and this playoff stint where he’s clearly injured as well and suddenly his stats don’t look so bad.
19
u/DaOldest Los Angeles Dodgers 7h ago
He hit the 2nd most home runs all time in a postseason run last year and also the 5th most total bases in a postseason run ever
0
u/joeh4384 Detroit Tigers 4h ago
I thought they should have benched him then too. No reason to play a clearly hurt guy who is like a quarter of his usual self.
1
u/Zaphaze Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago
He was mostly used as a decoy in that WS after game two, and it worked. The Yankees continuously switched righty arms w fresh lefties when Ohtani came to bat. Part of the reason is the dodgers did a good job hiding the extent of the injury, publishing articles of Ohtani’s texts in the dodgers chat saying he feels fine, as well a Dave himself saying Ohtani is ok, only to have surgery days after the series. Not to mention there wasn’t a surefire replacement like JDP this year.
So I’m fine w him playing that year as his presence still had an impact on the game, whereas this year w JDP showing promise and Ohtani looking even worse over a much larger sample size, I’m much more inclined to say he should be sitting out.

Their numbers are nearly identical. Both have career .235 ba in the postseason. Judge has a .350 .obp vs Ohtani’s .375. Judge has a .830 ops to Ohtani’s .860. They’re separated by a few doubles and walks.

Roberts is a balless weasel for allowing him to remain in there to hurt the rest of the team. If Roberts doesn’t have the balls to pull him, Ohtani should step up and do what’s best for the team too. Obviously Ohtani wants to play, what player doesn’t? The manager not pulling him is a disgrace if they know he’s injured.
18
u/raginghardon420 Los Angeles Dodgers 7h ago
Yeah the 3x WS Champion manager who has never had a player bad mouth him is a weasel… listen to yourself guy
0
u/YP_Schwartzy Milwaukee Brewers 6h ago
You can argue your point all you want, playing an injured player that is hurting his team isn’t the right decision.
5
u/sittingducks 7h ago
Roberts has always placed a lot of trust and loyalty in his guys. Just like how he decided not to pinch hit for Rojas in the 9th inning of G7 2025 even though the guy hadn't had a hit in months, or how he trusted Treinin to stay on the mound in 2024. It's worked out very well for him the last two playoffs, but sometimes those decisions don't pan out and of course hindsight is 20/20.
1
1
u/CalebosO4 Toronto Blue Jays 6h ago
I will say that the "hadn't had a hit in months" is a bit hyperbole considering he had a hit earlier in the game, so he wasn't hitless for a month when the decision came (and he also didn't play much in the postseason so it's not like he was 2025 postseason Andy Pages bad at hitting for a month straight). But going into the game, he didn't have a hit since Game 2 of the WCS which was a month before, which is what Joe Davis was referring to.

I guess I get it, he's the star & the best player, if he says he's good to go, I guess you have to listen to him? But since he's such a competitor I assume he'd say he's ready to go even if he isn't. Cal played through an injury for a lot of this season & it hurt the team a lot.

At least we have the moral victory of not starting our injured superstar to give the other team an automatic out.
With that said, 70% of our lineup were automatic outs anyways, so maybe we should have chanced it.
1
u/Horakochan Los Angeles Dodgers 3h ago
Its ok our lineup is mostly auto outs too so it turns out when entire team is dead it doesnt matter if u add one more or not. Mookie and tucker are only 2 doing well and tucker was 8th until this game lol..

Rare yankees W over the dodgers.
You’re not wrong, if Judge was on the Dodgers they would’ve just thrown him in the lineup after he asked nicely a few times.
19
u/AdamantArmadillo Los Angeles Dodgers 7h ago
I don't really get the point of moving him down unless you're going to move him to 9th so he has the top of the order backing him.
4
u/Lucky_Alternative965 Los Angeles Dodgers 7h ago
I'd say the 6 spot is probably the spot in the lineup for someone who's expected to do nothing and with the least amount of pressure. The 4 and 5 spot often do the damage if the top of the lineup gets on base, and we definitely dont want Ohtani batting there. And the 8 and 9 spot are somewhat expected to get on base and set the table for the top of the order, again, we definitely don't want Ohtani there. If he was going to be in the lineup, the 6 spot is probably the best spot for him, I don't mind it. Just happy he's out of the 4/5 spot.

2
u/Aduialion Los Angeles Dodgers 5h ago
He's supposed to be the DH. Literally is job his be better than 9th guy hitting on the roster
1
u/AdamantArmadillo Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago
Technically to be better than the 10th guy. Regardless, he’s obviously not living up to what his job is. The idea is to snap him out of his slump by getting him pitches to hit with big hitters behind him.
6
u/Tricky_Warthog_6645 7h ago
If you have to keep dropping the best player of our generation in the lineup further and further, don’t you think there’s something seriously wrong with his ability to play? You don’t ever drop a player like Ohtani in the lineup if he’s healthy and in a terrible slump.

I said it once got downvoted to hell but I will say it again. Endorsement deals. You guys don't know how much money is at stake
6
u/Budget-Ocelots Major League Baseball 6h ago
Probably 80% of all the MLB postseason endorsement deals. Maybe even 90%, since who would want to spend money to sell ads during the AL playoffs?
And I can't wait for the MLB dooming from ESPN if the LAD are out of the playoffs. Many articles and shows will say less than 8M viewership blah blah, down 50% YoY or some shit, and MLB deserved the lock out for a failed product.
4
u/JamminOnTheOne San Diego Padres 6h ago
How is money at stake? His existing deals are mostly long-term. He's going to be less attractive of an endorser if he misses a couple games this post-season?
-4
u/lemonpigger Washington Nationals 5h ago
It’s about the Dodgers’ endorsement deals. They have massive deals coming from Japan, and taking out their biggest icon during the playoffs wouldn’t help. Shohei might want to play because he’s competitive, but the Dodgers also have an incentive to let him play.
1
u/Boulderdorf San Diego Padres 6h ago
Yeah, like I'd take any chance to dunk on Roberts, but it's not really up to him anymore. If Ohtani wants to play, he kinda has no choice but to shrug and go down with the ship if that's what it comes down to.

Four might be normal but five seems to be optimal these days in the regular season at least. Most teams have an off day either Monday or Thursday until rainouts and stuff cause rescheduled games. For example, Skubal has a career ERA over a run higher on four days rest vs. five.
