There's so many box seats today where they serve prawn sandwiches and these people priced out.

u/Redbubble89 Boston Red Sox 3h ago
In Britian, "Prawn sandwich brigade" is a derogatory term for people who attend English football matches primarily to enjoy luxury boxes and corporate hospitality, It is a shrimp salad sandwich in American English.
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane coined the phrase after a Champions League match against Dynamo Kyiv in November 2000 to crictize home support. "At home they have a few drinks and probably the prawn sandwiches, and they don't realise what's going on out on the pitch." 'Ted Lasso's Roy Kent is based on this player. If you are American like myself, it is an out there reference. Baseball has priced the working class out and while it is safer, it is sterile and a lot of the 1%ers and those with a lot of disposable income aren't interested in the game.

Maybe Vancouver gets too much shit. Sounds to me like they just like partaking in a time old Canadian tradition.

Montreal riots for sports as well
1
u/Medical-Tank-960 Chicago White Sox 2h ago
Montreal takes it to another level because their sports riots have political and cultural subtexts (Richard Riot).

I always wonder what makes a happy crowd turn into a riotous crowd. Looks like in this case they were agitated by the cops.

u/mesquitegrrl Minnesota Twins ⢠Brooklyn Dodgers 4h ago
thatâs usually what it is, honestly. cops are masters at escalation.

I was also hoping Saskatoon would riot again last year, just to watch those shitty 8th Street cops attempt to shut down a gathering that wasn't a peaceful car meet-up for once.

It's horrible watching these clips. Like the famous one of Reggie Jackson and the Yankees, winning the World Series, and instead of being able to celebrate, they are running for their lives. This is definitely something the game and society has improved on.

I wonder if it has anything to do with getting rid of lead in gas and paint. I know there has been less violence in general since then.

don't English fans still rush the field after their club wins a championship? not condoning it but I've always found it interesting how American college sports and some European pro sports have field rushing, but not American pro sports.

u/GutterRider Los Angeles Dodgers 6h ago
We used to do it all the time, but at some point they decided it wasn't a good luck, and probably not safe for the players. Wasn't it in the late 90s and those NY WS where they started having cops manning the foul lines? That's how I remember it.

This is a good video on the history of rushing the field in the MLB if you have 15 mins

u/JamminOnTheOne San Diego Padres 5h ago
In 1986 in NY, they had cops on the foul lines, and then a bunch of cops on horses came rushing onto the field right after the final out.

At Dodger stadoum, they had cops up on the cement that was essentially the top of the dugout

Eh maybe on the field, but we see and hear about death and rioting happening within the streets all the time during a parade or right after a team wins a championship. I remember there was a shooting during Chiefs parade, someone fell and died during the Dodgers â24 parade, and then you have instances of looting and people eating literal shit off the ground after the Eagles won their first Super Bowl. People are nuts

No society is much worse then it was then , of coruse something's have gotten better but we lack even more freedom now then even the tiny amount of freedom we had then and that is simply unacceptable in my eyes, we built a prison around our selfs for "safety" and now the rich and the powerfull want to lock us in to that prison now that they have the technology to do so (mass surveillance and the ability to process all that information , plus mass media control to manipulate the uninformed, as well as the general suppression of education to keep people stupid) , but we americans (well humans at large tbh but ima start were i live) need to stop this before its to late but we wont cause we love our bread and circus......

We were out in the local suburbs and things stayed calm. Had one friend that was in Detroit and he came to school the next day bragging how he had helped flip over a police car.

u/MidtownKC Kansas City Royals 8h ago
Definitely happened in '76 when Chambliss went yard in the bottom of the 9th of game 5 to clinch the penant against KC. They beat KC the two years you mentioned as well, but not sure if those resulted in on-field incidents like this.
Edit: It was only the LCS, so they at least had the good sense not to burn the place down before the World Series.

Back when you can do a take out slide into the second baseman and throw punches at him and the umps didn't eject you. Baseball was weird back then.Â

Yes -- my dad was on the subway on the way home from that game when he heard wild cheering. The subway was stalled and two guys stole the home plate and left the train (to a crowd of boos) after the doors closed....well there was some type of maitenance problem, and the doors opened with the train still not moving, all the guys that had home plate rushed out after them..comes back to the train 5 minute later with the plate to a chorus of cheers saying they beat the crap out of those guys and got it back.
...not sure how moral the story is but it is a story.
