Players Only Dodgers' Alex Call blasts controversial Sydney Sweeney ad

https://www.thebiglead.com/dodgers-alex-call-sydney-sweeney-novig-commercial-soft-porn/

Since the last post about this got deleted because it contained a X screenshot, hopefully this one actually stays for comment.

Who is that ad supposed to target? The people who crow about patriotism are too busy at their keyboards to serve.

The people who actually join the military want a job with benefits.

There’s a fresh batch of 18 year olds every year

Those batches are getting smaller every year as well, so the armed forces will need to get an increasingly high percentage of them to sign up if they want to maintain their numbers.

It's almost as if something happened 18 years ago that ruined the economy and made people not want to have kids

Yeah that was definitely a metaphorical kick in the nuts although it seems like there are other things at play too

Uhg, my first thought was “What happened in the late 90s?”

Somehow is even more cringe that the “army of one climb a mountain hoorah” stuff I remember as a kid

At least those didn't feel like something written for an Ironman movie, that is supposed to be so over the top you know it's fake.

Reassure the people who are already on their side. It's like how car ads are often actually for people who have already bought the car and meant to help them feel reassured of their purchase decision.

meant to help them feel reassured of their purchase decision.

So many American manufucturer ads stopped even touting the actual build quality of the car and it's all blah blah, America, Patriot, America, Be Proud, Buy our vehicle cause America.

Car ads are almost all emotional appeals, even if they aren't claiming patriotism. There's no logical way to try to convince people to buy a hugely expensive item with massive depreciation that people use on average 4% of the time (and even then, most of that time people hate using it, because it means dealing with/being stuck in traffic.)

Maybe I'm in the minority then, cause back in the day they used to provide info like crash test ratings and other data from tests or award categories. It wasn't exclusively the patriotism angle. Even some of the pickup truck ads don't even advertise how much weight in can tow. It's just 30 seconds telling us in multiple ways to be a patriot by buying their product.

We keep the middle class poor and college expensive so we can sucker in kids who want to escape the cycle. If some of them die, fuck it!

It's just as much intended to reassert the social norm of troop worship and the image of "America (and the GOP) = strong"

But the people this actually will work on already feel that way because they're beer bellied LARPers who put Punisher logos on their lifted pick-ups. Those guys aren't signing up for anything but diabetes.

Those people are immensely important to this regime.

You have people at home that would aggressively shut down any questioning of what the hell our military is doing.

Keeps red towns red and keeps regular people from understanding that you can condemn your government while still being patriotic.

Sorry for the rant.

But do they really want to enlist when they could get stuck indefinitely on a rusting aircraft carrier in the Indian Ocean?

And a whole lot of them have been offline since Ukraine hit those Russian data centers. What a strange coincidence! Like mentions of Fauci dropping off by like 60% at the same time on Twitter.

My wife and I are both veterans from long ago, we both got out 24 years ago. Just yesterday we were talking about the current state of the military and its leadership and my wife says to me, "Who the hell would join the military today?"

I imagine those ads are completely useless and targeted at people who already know they want to join the military, ad or no ad.
