The Hernandez double play when Misiorowski was on the ropes was game saving for the Brewers.

u/bigbluethunder Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
Yepp. Pratt has been shaky so far this post-season, he needed to field cleanly and get it out quickly on that one, and he executed perfectly. Hopefully he can be more solid this series, as we'll need him to be.
Turang makes these turns just look so easy. What a joy he is to watch.
13
u/The_Boredom_Line Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
That one to get them out of the 5th was something else. Going to his left, spinning, falling away from second, and still getting enough on the throw, and a perfect strike to Coop nonetheless, was such a difficult play, but he made it look incredibly easy.

u/atowelguy Colorado Rockies 2d ago
I still don't think that should've been a balk on Misiorowski
64
u/Pack87Man Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
As a Brewers fan, I was less mad about that and more mad that they didn't call a balk on Vesia when he picked off Bauers. You can't be technical letter of the law to one team and loose towards the other. Vesia was nowhere near stepping towards first.
18
u/ImaManCheetahh Los Angeles Dodgers 2d ago
lefties and righties have been held to different balk standards forever, I don’t really get it
12

Vesia wasn't up there doin' a balk like that (or maybe he was, idk what a balk is anymore)

this national league post season has been crazy (for brewers fans at least lol)
No game with a lead over 2

u/MunchySmallz Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
Since beating Cincinnati 20-0 to lock up a playoff berth on September 11, we have not won any game by more than 4 runs
And one of those 4-run wins we were tied with St. Louis going into the 8th inning
8
u/JonnyXX Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
We were 11-3 since then though. Not counting postseason.

Yeah I know I’m saying we’re winning games but it’s always tight 😂

Miz getting knocked out early looked grim for the Brew Crew. Being able to dig in and squeeze out that 1-run win is huge for their confidence the rest of the series after getting swept last year.

u/1sinfutureking Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
Something worth remembering is that this bullpen is nasty. They’re throwing gas and they love to get at it

Ashby has been my personal MVP of the post season so far. Dude has been lights out

u/Our-Gardian-Angel Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
By the time July ended I was worried that he might be fatigued as a result of Murph's bizarre obsession with pitching him what felt like every other game during the regular season. But I'm glad he rediscovered his form in August/September and has looked so good in the postseason so far. When Ashby is looking like this, it makes life so much easier for the pitching staff.
2
u/aDarkDarkCrypt 2d ago
Im not as worried about him considering he originally started out as a starter. Same with Patrick. Theyre built for multiple innings and longevity unlike someone like Megill or Uribe.

u/atomiczap Milwaukee Brewers • Madison Mallards 2d ago
10000000000% would rather have him get the game 4 start over May. Lot more confident in him putting up 3 scoreless than May.
5
u/lucasj Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago edited 2d ago
Watching the game I definitely thought Miz looked worse from the 2nd on. Skubal looked much better - until all of a sudden he didn’t. Murphy helped by pulling Miz at the right time. At the end of the day Miz managed the trouble he created while Skubal earned two runs and was looking worse than Miz on fewer pitches by the time he was pulled. Miz’s struggles make me nervous, but even so, he kept them to small hits and prevented them from stringing enough together to get home more than once. Way more pitches than I would’ve liked.
1
u/Joementum2004 San Diego Padres • Los Angeles Angels 2d ago
Honestly, that was when I knew Milwaukee would win. Not scoring early off Miz was a giant missed opportunity, and their bullpen is so good that it’ll make the end of games virtually automatic.
25
u/rednite_ Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
Great game, it feels good to know we can’t get swept. I hope we can find a way to beat Yama today too. Would be huge to guarantee at least one more game in MKE this year and have a strong series lead.
44
u/TelltaleHead Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
Feels good to get another win in a game where Mis didn't really have his A stuff. I have to assume we get a good start from him this postseason at some point?
Feeling generally better than last year where it seemed we were completely overwhelmed offensively. Obviously our offense wasn't amazing last night but it was a significantly higher median quality of at bat last night than in last year's ALCS. It felt like we worked the count more. While we didn't capitalize on them, we did have a few opportunities to blow the game open as opposed to last year where we never even had those opportunities.
14
u/deuteranopia Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
The defense really had his back out there, and the offense did well enough against a tough pitcher to pick up the pieces. I can't wait for this afternoon!
12
u/BarcaJeremy4Gov Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
I'm not expecting much more than 4 out of him the rest of the way. he's alrady pitched more innings this year than ever before and hes got at least 3 more starts ahead of him. i'll be thrilled to get through the order once, plus the top 3 or 4 and then give it to the bullpen.
16
u/Bhliv169q Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
In all fairness, he probably gets into inning 6 if the 2nd inning isn't basically 2.5 innings worth of pitches.
3
u/BarcaJeremy4Gov Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
probably, but this is the second start in a row where hes had some command issues, getting a ton of fouls hit instead of swing and misses, and his velo is down a few mph.
3
u/Gryphon999 Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
He's up over 50 IP from what he had last year between AAA and MIL.
Skubal, on the other hand, is about 40 IP down from the last two years.
1
u/BarcaJeremy4Gov Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
😬 that makes me nervous for a Skenes type year next year.

u/houseofmops Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago

49
u/Denode Los Angeles Dodgers 2d ago
Same, but then Rays are just AL Brewers. Either way it’s gonna be an electric NLCS.
13
u/kirbyfaraone Los Angeles Angels 2d ago
Feels like Rays have better ability to get runs, pitching strong but not as much as Brewers obviously
15
u/Desperate_Zebra9699 Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
Brewers scored .5 runs more per game than the Rays this year and the Rays were also only slightly better than the Brewers for HRs per game. Not sure I believe they have a better ability to get runs. The only argument I could see is for the playoffs, but that sample size is very small.
2
u/aDarkDarkCrypt 2d ago
It's funny you mention that considering Rasmussen and Peralta both started out as Brewers.
14
u/Congenital_Stirpes San Diego Padres 2d ago
I would put good money on whichever team wins this series to win it all
1
u/atomiczap Milwaukee Brewers • Madison Mallards 2d ago
I think, just in terms of how good the teams are, its clearly Dodgers 1, Brewers 2, and then a pretty decent gap to the Rays at 3. But I could easily see the Rays coasting to a sweep while the NL is a 7 game, knock down, drag out fight where every game comes down to the wire and whoever comes out on top is gassed and going against a rested Rays team.
6
u/GiannisIsTheBeast 2d ago
Which kind of sucks, if the Brewers beat the Dodgers, it’ll feel like it’s over and then you have to go on and win another series…
Like when the Badgers in basketball beat Kentucky in the final 4 but still had to beat Duke to win the title and they lost… it felt like the championship was verse Kentucky.
8
2
u/Yankees2860 New York Yankees 2d ago
or another more recent example. Everyone, and I mean everyone, was saying the winner of the Thunder vs. Spurs series would dominate the NBA Finals, and then the Knicks stunned everyone.

I felt that way about Phillies-Dodgers last year only for the Blue Jays to give us by far the biggest scare we’ve had in these two title runs. I wouldn’t count out the winner of the AL just yet.

It’s kind of crazy seeing how few runs are being scored in these games although I suppose it’s a testament to both team teams pitching.

The optimistic things I took from this game:
Adopting a careful game plan against Mis reminiscent to the Padres and getting him out of the game fairly early
As a consequence of 1, seeing a lot of their bullpen arms, which definitely matters for a 7 game series
A lot of pressure and baserunners
The bad:
Absolutely bad RISP hitting continues. Whether that’s good Brewers pitching, bad approach from the Dodgers, or a bit of luck, it’s obviously going to hurt. The Braves lost in part because none of their 19 walks scored.
GIDP. I know the season stats were bad. Yes, it’s a sign of baserunners on. But it’s also probably a factor of the approach, the pitching, and the team being a bit older and slower.
TBD:
- Starting pitching. Skubal was good, but I think the winning formula for the Dodgers is for their starters to outpitch the Brewers. Hard to do with Mis, and maybe Henderson. Maybe Snell and Glasnow can outpitch Gasser and May. But if the starters can’t, then it looks a lot harder.
12
u/gooby1985 Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
I have seen the bullpen point made multiple times but I feel like that’s wishful thinking. Dodgers used 4 pitchers, Brewers used 5 but DL Hall threw 4 pitches so pretty much the same. Sanzatela and Patrick can go 2-3 innings, Drohan and Harrison as starters were not ace quality but they can go long. The last three listed haven’t been used yet in the playoffs.
12
u/wobba_fett Los Angeles Dodgers 2d ago
It is wishful thinking in a way, but this being game 1 i see it as just "experience against some of these arms before they come up again." As opposed to Miz going 7 and dodgers only seeing 1 or 2 guys out of the pen. Some data is better than no data so if we are looking for positives out of a losing game i can see this being a small one.
3
u/CobainPatocrator 2d ago
Surely they can get more data from a season's-worth of tape than one or two ABs?
6
7
u/Astropolitika Los Angeles Dodgers • Chicago White Sox 2d ago
Ha, it may indeed be wishful thinking.
The arms I'm most worried about out of your pen are Megill, Uribe, and Ashby, so I'm glad they got to see them game 1.
3
u/gooby1985 Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
Fair enough. And wishful thinking is part of fandom. I’m more annoyed because I’ve seen this comment spoken like a Buster Olney hit piece about why he thinks the Brewers are actually losing.
18
u/samwisegamgee St. Louis Cardinals • Chicago White Sox 2d ago
If I’m a Dodgers fan, I’m not stressed after this loss. You all were a swing away from breaking this game wide open early on against their best starter. It looked rough, but they were consistently putting pressure on Brewers pitchers all night long, to the bitter end.
Even the Mookie out in the 9th had HR potential, it wasn’t a cheap fly out.
I think the broadcast mentioned a Dave Roberts quote where he said essentially, he’s not worried about the offense because the at-bats themselves look great. Forcing high pitch counts, making loud outs, etc.
Still rooting against you guys 😅 but tbh I’m terrified this series has the makings for a Game 7 heartbreaker for the Brewers.
Maybe I’m projecting my White Sox trauma onto them though 😞
11
u/JonnyXX Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
Funny how our minds work. You are not wrong but you could almost say the exact same thing for the Brewers. Got to Skubal early (No way the Dodgers traded for him hoping for 5 innings), saw most of the high leverage bullpen guys, and twice were a hit away from breaking it open.
4
u/samwisegamgee St. Louis Cardinals • Chicago White Sox 2d ago
Oh absolutely agreed on all fronts; and I’d like to clarify that your take was the one I left the game with last night. Since I was replying to a Dodgers fan, I was mostly just shifting my perspective to be Dodgers-centered.
It feels like the prevailing narrative of last night was that the Dodgers offense is anemic, and I don’t think anyone can say that with complete confidence. That team has proven in the past that they will never roll over and die.
Both teams just looked so evenly matched. Honestly a great sign that this series will be tight, and exactly what we were expecting!
3
u/Astropolitika Los Angeles Dodgers • Chicago White Sox 2d ago edited 2d ago
I see your Cardinals flair, and I appreciate the mutual trauma our teams gave each of us in our history.
I see your White Sox flair, and share in your grief brother. JRam is just something else. Not the records we wanted them to set, but considering where they were, it was a hell of a turnaround, and they should be proud of what they’ve done. Hoping they can keep and extend some magic next year.
3
u/samwisegamgee St. Louis Cardinals • Chicago White Sox 2d ago
😂 Agreed on all fronts, seriously it was such a fun ride this year! Because both of my teams have been mid-to-atrocious over the last …several years, I’ve slowly gravitated towards becoming a neutral baseball fan who’s in it for the storylines of each season.
Getting to be deeply excited for a team’s success was such a treat …and a reminder of how heartbreaking sports can be.
Anyway, cheers! Hoping there IS a 2027 to be excited for

The Dodgers at bats were extremely good when they weren't hitting into double plays. So many full counts worked and they did a great job at getting Misiorowski's pitch count up. Just gotta hit with runners in scoring position and we'll be in a great spot.

How does it feel to be a Tigers fan watching Skubal pitch for the Dodgers? Are you rooting for his individual success but hoping for a Dodger loss? Rooting for the Dodgers so he gets a ring?
Just curious how that dynamic feels for yall.

Brewers and Padres ended locally at midnight one game and 1 am the next. How was that different?
4
u/Iwon100grand San Diego Padres 2d ago
Not sure what you mean by that. The game will be over by around 5 pm today... The East coast teams game should be done around 9 pm pacific. I'm sure the east coast fans would prefer an earlier game and the west coast fans would prefer a later game. That's the point im making. Also the rating would be way better in LA at 8 or 9npm than 4 pm...

Doesn’t seem to be much of a difference in plate approach between runners on vs not. It’s a power lineup.

He looked rough and held the Dodgers to 1 run. It speaks to how great he is and how good of a "pitcher" he has become to battle through when his fastball isn't at his regular levels.

Yeah. Definitely. That's why they mentioned guys like Freddie shortening up and going opposite field early on. Because guys were swinging for the fences and were just ass vs a pitcher who allowed a .157 BA all year and your team managed to get to him for a ton of singles.

Murphy just needs to give him the paddle before the first inning instead of after 2.

Dodgers pitching remains incredible but the offensive slump has to end now that they’re out of the division series.
6
u/catcat1986 2d ago
Brewers played great, but I guess people don’t see what I see. Dodgers did have runners LOB, however they were hitting the ball hard and well, it just was at the wrong people. For example, mookie betts last hit was smoked, it was just right at the guy. The center field took like a handful of steps and the ball was on him. Such is baseball.
This will be a good series two good teams both improved from last year. I saw positives from both teams.
14
u/Extreme_Reporter9813 Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
The second hardest hit ball of the game was Garrett Mitchell with the bases loaded in the 8th (106 mph) but was right at the SS to end the inning.
If that ball is hit a couple feet to the right or left, it’s a 4-1 game going into the 9th.
That’s just baseball. Should be a great series.
1
u/Time-Examination-436 2d ago
Yes it will be a great series and I agree with you assessment. However, this year the Dodgers don't have a lock on it all! They can be had and hoping the Brewers are the ones who do it.
1
u/0430ke Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
You are acting like the Brewers also didn't have just as much traffic and hard hits at people. That's baseball
1
u/catcat1986 2d ago
They didn't. On average dodgers hit better then the brewers, or so says statecast. However, still doesn't guarantee a win. Essentially, number say that the expected average was higher for the dodgers then the brewers.
3
u/bigbluethunder Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
I still think that the Hernandez recovery was definitionally a tie, and Turang should've been safe there. Insanely lucky recovery by him, if that ball goes any other direction or speed, Turang is obviously safe.

Can anyone give me a rundown on Yamamoto? I went to watch in game two last year, he was great. But how has he been this year? Obviously he is a great pitcher, but I am seeing losses to the Padres and the Cardinals in September? Does he have some sort of achilles heel?
6
u/wobba_fett Los Angeles Dodgers 2d ago
Hes hittable for an inning or two every start or so, it depends on if the opposition can catch it and take advantage before he adjusts. Also no run support.
3
u/Queen-Makoto Seattle Mariners 2d ago
Yeah, I don't think there's anything else notable. It's usually the 1st inning though in the Braves series it was randomly the 5th. I think his ERA is like 1 run higher in the 1st and then it drops when you exclude that. I heard announcers describe it as he figures out what's working for him that day with some trial and error and then dials in. His pitch mix is also very evenly spread.

He's one of the greatest as long as he doesn't have to pitch to Ceddanne Rafaela for some reason

Wins and losses are a pretty inaccurate way to judge a pitcher considering how heavily they rely on the offense to put runs on the board. Yamamoto is nails.
1
u/totallynotliamneeson Milwaukee Brewers • Racine Belles 2d ago
I more meant that they lost those games and Yamamoto gave up a couple runs in each. But yeah, it's not a great metric to measure pitching with in general, I agree.

Memo to Brewers hitters, if you get down in the count, 0-2, don’t sit fast ball down the middle, cause it’s not coming!! that’s what the Braves hitters were looking for, now they’re at home, still looking for it, I’m sad to say.

I wrote something similar in the Dodgers sub last night, but I feel like game one, with these teams and that caliber of starter on both sides, was always going to be a one run game in either direction. Ultimately, the functional difference was which team got the solo shot off the ace. It would be FAR more surprising for this series to be a sweep, in either direction. Should be a good one.

Dodgers had a lot of traffic, just couldn't cash in. I'm not panicking yet.

This offense is absolutely cooked
Predict we lose 1-0 game 2.

When your ace is struggling like that out of the gate, it’s going to carry over to the rest of your rotation. Both offenses are struggling, and the Dodgers can easily outlast them with some small ball and a much more complete pitching staff. I’m expecting Andy Pages to be the NLCS MVP as well between this game and the NLDS clincher; he just looks the most solid out of the Dodgers’ lineup right now.

"Here's how this is actually a win for the Dodgers"

I could see how yesterday looked good for the Dodgers but I am not doing the Darvin Ham 2023 Lakers Nuggets moral victories. It's a must win game today
