The biggest annoying thing here is the announcers not knowing wtf they were talking about, immediately saying home run

Yeah that was bad. Pretty sure this has happened in the Trop before. Ball is in play.
28
u/Internal_Wheel_89 Baltimore Orioles • Baltimore Orioles 11d ago
the Trop does have two catwalk rings where it is a home run if a ball hits them. It's happened several times, including in the playoffs, and I think people just assume that any ball that hits any roof is a home run. But it's not even always that way at the Trop, which has two other catwalk rings where it is NOT a home run!

I seem to remember a fielder losing a ball when it hit one of the catwalks and it fell in the field.
33
u/JetpackingPenguin Los Angeles Dodgers 11d ago
it was honestly incredibly unprofessional of them. the moment it was caught it was an out. as announcers it is not your job to start saying it's a home run???? that's a fire-able offense in my opinion. You confused many fans and started a potential controversy for what?
16
u/Luis_Arraez_Fan San Francisco Giants 11d ago
Yep, a simple, "what's going on here, what's the rules"? would have been fine.

the worst thing is when someone is objectively wrong and they gaslight a bunch of people by just yelling the wrong thing over and over again "it's a homerun"

Forgotten amongst Ceiling Gate, in the late innings was some crazy pitching psychology from the Brew Crew. If my hazy memory serves, Tatis, Machado, and Merrill all stared at early strikes directly down the dick. As if the Brewers concocted a strategy of "When the game gets late, they'll overthink the moment and wait for a pitch that'll never come". Brilliant.

from a 2021 article about why Tropicana Field has ground rules where hitting certain catwalks is a home run:
Tropicana Field is the only fixed stadium in the sport.
But there are several other retractable-roof parks in the game that will occasionally have a cover over the field: American Family Field in Milwaukee, Chase Field in Phoenix, Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, LoanDeport Park in Miami, Minute Maid Park in Houston, Rogers Centre in Toronto and T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
None of the other parks shares the same potential catwalk concerns that Tropicana Field faces. For the stadiums with retractable roofs, the rules are simply that if a batted ball hits the roof over fair territory, it is in play and if caught is an out. If it hits the roof in foul territory, it is a dead ball.

Fun fact: back when fans were still allowed in the outfield the ground rule triple, which states a live ball that rolls into the crowd is an automatic triple, was invented to prevent players from getting into fights with fans who wanted to keep the ball.

In MLB the rule is: if the ball comes in contact with roof and it is in fair territory when the ball makes contact, the ball is still live. The same rule applies to either team. Bad break for the Padres but the Brewers caught the ball. So don't say the Padres were robbed, its the rules each team agreed to.The only exception is if the ball gets wedged in the roof, then, and only then, is the play repeated.

I’m over the roof play, tracking seems to indicate it would only be out in 1/30 parks.
Machado and Merrill were awful in critical spots with RISP while also having terrible final ABs to conclude it.
I guess at least they didn’t have to use Miller, it’s tough to get a win off a Miz start but it’s worse because they were so close.

You all think maybe the baseball hit by France was deflated by the Brewers before the pitch? There's a good chance that it might not have been at the right psi levels and that it affected the launch angle of the ball. If the Brewers have anyone employed who used to work with the Patriots it's possible this is what happened

It was a great game by both teams but really the 12 men LOB had more to do with the Padres losing then the France play. San Diego burned a lot of bullpen, Milwaukee not far behind. As a Brewers fan, we've seen this team come back many times and pitching pretty damn good. They'll be back at it today so lets get after it. San Diego is downplaying Logan and what he has done this year so let's bring it home

To me, this kills some of the logic behind other situations with the ball touching the field of play. For example, when a foul ball heads for the stands in a stadium, it doesn't get counted as an out if it hits the protective net before you catch it. I don't see why we would treat a roof differently. In both instances, the player isn't really fielding the hit ball, they're fielding off of the stadium.
Now, we can't know for sure that the ball stays fair so I can understand not calling a HR. But at the least, this should be a dead ball. Calling it an out just feels like the worst option available.
→ More replies (1)9
u/frix86 Milwaukee Brewers 11d ago
The protective net is on foul territory, the part of the roof the ball hit was in fair territory. If it hit the roof in foul territory, it would have been ruled foul.

Super deflating ending that makes it easy to miss a lot of good: they did what they needed to against Mis, a lot of the role guys had good days, and the bullpen (mostly) locked down after Ray came out.
Need to move past it, and plead to God that the issues from the first half with clutch hitting haven’t decided to come back. It was a good game between two really good teams, and there’s still at least two more games to go.

Bill was getting cute and calling a lot of cutters that were getting touched up every time. It was less about him not having it and more about shitty calls but still walking out with the win.

I think most would agree the rule was correctly applied. My issue is the rule is idiotic.
When the puck hits the scoreboard in hockey, play doesn’t just continue. At the very least, it should just be a dead ball. The idea that the fucking roof is in play is insane.

Oh, it’s the dumbest/luckiest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. Especially with those stakes. But the announcers were an absolute joke trying to make it seem like the umps had an opportunity to deem it a home run if they wanted to.

I can take an actual fucking loss, but that ball was a mile out of the stadium. Fucking bullshit.

I wanna see the ball track on that. I thought it would have hooked foul personally but I may be totally wrong

The boys were very unclutch sadly, we had numerous chances to win it and we choked, Merrill especially
Low key tho if Tony Gwynn jr is right and Frances hit would have been a HR and the roof prevented it that is mega stupid

Is there somewhere yet that shows where that ball would have gone if the roof/railing wasn’t there? We definitely have that technology right?

lmao the idiot commentators gaslight an entire fandom...that wasn't a homerun. this "controversy" is so dumb and really shows how tribal reddit is to immediately jump to the same conclusion after 5 seconds.

So you hit a ball so far and so long and it’s declared an out? Damn that’s a hard loss.

That would have been a unicorn of a home run blast with that launch angle

So Ty's homer that wasn't will get a lot of attention, but
"We had another N-word ball a moment ago” is an ALL-TIMER AJ quote.
