Job ideas for Barista FIRE? Looking for something part-time and low-stress
I'm a software developer looking into Barista FIRE, and I'm trying to figure out what kind of work I could do for maybe 10–20 hours a week to cover some expenses without going back to a full-time job.
I'm not really a people person. I enjoy some small talk, but working as a barista sounds like hell to me lol.
I'm pretty handy with tools. I can do basic DIY stuff like laying flooring, changing car oil, and similar tasks. I'm not afraid to learn new skills, but I'm not looking for anything involving hard physical labour.
Some ideas I've considered so far:
- Locksmith – seems interesting, and potentially good for on-demand work.
- Arborist / tree work – although I'm not sure how physically demanding it gets.
- Bicycle or motorcycle suspension repairs – or some other niche repair business, like rebuilding battery packs.
- Smart home specialist – setting up home automation, sensors, etc. Sounds fun technically, but probably involves too much talking to customers.
Ideally, I'd like something with these characteristics:
- Work on demand, with the ability to refuse jobs when I don't feel like working.
- Maximum 20 hours a week.
- The freedom to take a month off whenever I want.
- Not too much customer interaction.
- Low upfront investment, so I don't have to spend a fortune on tools and equipment before getting started.
For those of you who have achieved Barista FIRE, or run a small side business like this: what do you do?
I'm especially interested in niche trades, repair work, or other jobs that people don't usually think about. What would you recommend, and what would you avoid?
