Bahamian Discussion We cooked.

I know I could’ve used a better title but honestly I just expressing my current thoughts. Went to the gas station today, Shell specifically because it was the closest and was one of the cheapest especially compared to Rubis. When I looked at the price that shit said $7.49 a gallon. Put $35 because I drive a small japanese car. Didn’t fill the tank fully. I make $8 an hour so yeah I basically working to pay for gas. Was raining today, roads were flooded. I live in Pinewood so it makes that even worse. Took basically 10 minutes of me avoiding roads that were too flooded.

Honestly, with the state of how this country has been always, yeah it’s hell rn. I realized I can tolerate questionable infrastructure, but I can’t tolerate bad infrastructure with pay that can’t keep up with inflation and cost of living. The government honestly better do fuel subsidies for at least 3-6 months because this is hell.

Not much individuals can do about fuel, but we as individuals can start growing our own food and buying from local farmers to avoid gas prices of imported food.

You'd be surprised what you can grow in pots on your back porch

Most Bahamian soil's pretty lacking so it's probably a thing for raised beds anyway. Although those also need land.

Tom Scott recently did a video about strawberry's being grown in shredded coconut husks which did sound interesting.

That's just fuel too. Just wait for the food prices to spike next year due to lack of grown produce as a result of the war.

That’s another reason why I hope they provide fuel subsidies too. I know very well it won’t solve anything but let’s be real the economy can’t handle the full brunt of price hikes like this.

Stock up on food and other necessities because prices are going to get higher . I just came back from the US and their prices are higher due to inflation and im hearing about a possible truckers strike .

As a Trucker in Canada, forget about it - you will never get 2 people in this industry to agree that the sky is blue, much less universally agree to any sort of real world job action. It's dog eat dog out here anymore, plus a massive amount of the industry is megafleets which wouldn't tolerate their drivers just up and stopping anyways.

This sort of stuff has been tried for the 30+ years I've been in the industry and never goes anywhere.

I'm not saying that it wouldn't be an effective tactic at getting some of the issues in the industry fixed, but it'll never happen.

Are the truckers in Canada and the US under the same union

Very few of us are unionized to begin with, which comes back to the industry being dog-eat-dog over here. A lot of drivers are upset about things that being unionized could absolutely fix, but they are anti-union simply because their family/friends/whatever have put it in their heads that unions are bad.

I'm union and have it pretty darned good here. I also know anti-union people in the industry who are pissed that that "things are terrible!" and just can't seem to wrap their head around how a union could fix that. Can't fix stupid.

Oh wow thats surprising I would assume with some of the working conditions truckers worked in that they would pro union .

We all should be union, but in both Canada and the USA there is a not insignificant anti-union mentality amongst many people unfortunately, although it's much more prevelant in the USA. But like I said, then many of these same people complain about things that being union could fix.

I can understand the hesitation for anti union mentality because some union leaders can be corrupt and actually work against their members but benefits out weight the negatives once an iron clad contractual agreement is put in place .

Unions have been on the decline for years in the U.S.

The truckers are always talking about striking in the US. They don't mean it.

Apt title bro, we're in a tough spot fr. On this side of the world we can only import fuel from the US and Canada - this whole things is one of those guy's fault.

At least Brave pleaded our plight to on the world stage in the UN. haha

Still though, at this point between budgeting even harder and offsetting costs with either another job or growing our own food... all we can do is wait it out.

This is 100% caused by Trump. Such an embarrassment of a President.

petrol went up 50 cents between friday and monday. $8.35 in the islands outside of Nassau. i'm buying electric for my next vehicle - assuming I'll have money when the beater i'm driving now kicks the bucket.

Also assuming and hoping for reliable electricity supply. I am so sad for this country…

have you been to Haiti? Dominica? many parts of africa or the middle east? how about India? or even consider downtown miami? This is the best little country in the world. I will never be sad to get to live here. yes life is hard but we have it so good compared to many many other people around this wide world. how about alaska? want to live where they get 1 hour of sun a day for much of the year?

Did I say that I’m sad to live here? I love this country. I am sad about the decline. I am sad about the state of affairs here. I am sad about the filth. I am sad about the infrastructure. I am sad the corruption. I am sad about the greed. I am sad about the education system. I am sad about how government prioritizes spending. I am sad about the crime. No; we’re not the WORST place, but we’re certainly not “the best”.

run for parliament. move to a family island. There is much that can be done to make a difference.

How about debating the facts instead of just tossing out insults. I've been to some of those countries, as well as many of the Islands of the Bahamas, and yes, you certainly do have your challenges, but you certainly don't have it as bad as many other places.

Could always be worse. We could be having civil wars or getting bombed and starved in the interest of western imperialism, but this is one of the most expensive countries to live in worldwide. That doesn’t change because people have it worse.
