Diamondbacks were pursuing Luis Garcia Jr. before being acquired by the Yankees

.873 OPS this season with WAS
.736 OPS this season with NYY
He’s better than Pavin (lowest bar possible) but idk how much of a difference maker he would’ve been tbh

So what you are saying is that Nootbaar is the goat 🤔 (Outside of Moreno and Nado)

I was a big fan of him when we got him, but he had that very long dry spell at the beginning. I remember one night after a upsetting loss to the giants I just sat looking at our RHP vs LHP splits for an hour, drafting a frustrated rant about how Kepler was trash(correct), Corbin’s splits were all fucked up(also true), and that I was unsure if I could really defend Nootbaar anymore as he just did nothing.
Well I ended up forgetting to save that draft before falling asleep
And the next day Nootbaar hits a leadoff Homerun.
And the day after that he had a pinch hit Grand Slam.
Shut my ass up real quick. Thank god I have a horrible memory and forgot to save my write up LMAO.
Shout out Nootbaar, imma keep defending you, sorry I lost the faith for a sec 😔

Tbf I will audibly groan if I hear "And now hitting, Dbacks DH PAVIINNN SMIIIITHHHH" next season, even though his last walkoff homer showed he's capable.

Nope the Dbacks better not give up Morillo, we need to keep some of the elite bullpen in place still especially with Kevin Ginkel and Ryan Thompson gone 100%.

Selfishly, as a Nats and D-backs fan, I would love for the Yankees to trade García here. He’s an above-average hitter, a great clubhouse presence, and a really good dude who’s so much fun to root for.
I was hoping for the D-backs to acquire him before the deadline. Would be great if it could still happen.

I saw an article saying they were asking for Juan Morillo for him, so I don’t think it’s gonna happen anytime soon, sadly

The cost to get Garcia was two negative WAR relievers, their #14 prospect and #25 prospect. #14 is still #14 with the Nats, #25 is now #20. 0.6 WAR with the Yankees in 43 games. He has one more year of control.
The cost to get Nootbar was our #5 prospect, I think #24?, and #20. #5 is #22 with the Cards, #24? is #27, and #20 is their #27. 0.3 WAR in 42 games with us. He has one more year if control.
This is not a complaint about Nootbar. This is just showing how completly desolate the farm system actually is.

That's crazy that Eagan was our #5 prospect and became the Cardinals #22 prospect in their system.

That stat makes me want to throw myself off a bridge tbh

I think it speaks to the organization development problem that exists within the Dbacks org. It's not like we're trading our farm system each year. We're just not doing a good job developing prospects into MLB-ready players.
What needs to change?

This is what frustrates me about the Yankees and the Dodgers. They have these great farm systems AND are always in playoff contention. Like what the hell? Should it not be one or the other???

Those rankings mean nothing. Both of those prospects the Nats got from the Yankees aren’t even top 40 prospects in the Nats organization. MLB.com just put them there for fans to see what Nats got for lui

These rankings are close to worthless and should just be used for fun and not much more. Things like MLB pipeline and Fangraphs prospect rankings are a nice snapshot but they dont adjust quickly and rely on pedigree FAR more than actual talent. Take Jose Fernandez, he was ranked in the 40s by Fangraphs and MLB Pipeline had him in the high 20's. If you followed the system closely last year and listened to what his coaches were saying about his play especially in the 2nd half this guy was clearly one of the best prospects in the system, and that was before he hit the cover off the ball in spring training. All that is to say, I wouldnt get too caught up in who ranks where in prospect systems.

First of all, every org overhypes their young players. Who cares what he did in spring training. Do you know what Jose did when it actually mattered? Well below average bat. He was ranked 40 and produced like a 40 ranked player. Replaceable depth.
As for the rest, lets math it. We gave up three prospects for Nootbar who was in the middle of a down year. The Yankees gave up two prospects and two washed relievers for Garcia who was in the middle of a breakout. Their offer got a player at his peak. Our offer could only get a player at his floor. Noot did bounce back, credit to him. But this is draining your savings account just to afford clothes at a thrift shop.

Hey man if you see a 22 year old prospect skip AAA and contribute positively in the major leagues in their rookie rookie playing 1b, ss, and 3b and want to assert the nonsense that you are go right ahead, nothings gonna stop you, just keep looking at those pipeline rankings!
Youre honestly angry that a player with a more successful track record in Nootbar went for more than Garcia Jr? You can call him a player at his peak or you can call it a speculative buy, thats up to you. Seems to me he was better in 2024 than 2026 but thats just stats, just like nootbarr being not only a better bat but a more valuable one in less at bats.
Now I think we overpaid for nootbarr but youre spouting off nonsense. I think Eagen has a shot to be starting pitching depth and the dbacks are going to miss that, but we have also seen a ton of guys look like him at 23 in AA and go on to disappoint, he does not have surefire pedigree or talent. Remember Aaron Blair? Taylor Widener? Losing Santana sucks, he came on strong this year but I also remember lefty relievers being flashes in the pan like Clay Zavada. Brian Curley is fun from his college pitching memes but hes 23 in high A and AA and got hit very, very hard. If you look just past the prospect ranking numbers you might come to different conclusions, not just about the nootbar trade but the dbacks system in general but that takes effort to follow the minor leagues

Your broader point makes sense, I agree that you shouldn’t bank on most players that show potential panning out, because odds are they won’t. Your take on Fernandez is way off though. Most 40s never even sniff the bigs let alone have an impact. He was a positive factor in several wins this year. Yes he was overhyped after his 2 homer debut but he far exceeded what you’d expect out of someone ranked that low.

We have no trade bait or surplus of talent at any position or in the minors. Makes it hard to make trades when your shit GM does a terrible job drafting top potential star players.

Well good thing we know that now
