I carry shelter dogs around NYC in a dog backpack to help them get adopted. Meet Moo Deng!

I love this guy’s comics so much! 😂
I used to love seeing him post the crude pen-drawn 3 panels back in the day

When I visited NYC for the first time and got off the taxi from the airport, the first person who talked to me was someone who looked very much like you and asked me if I wanted to adopt the cute dog they had in their bag 😛
I don't know if it was you, but that was a nice first impression of New Yorkers for me 😁

Good god, I hope I never encounter him on the streets of New York, cause if a cute guy with a cuter puppy in a backpack asks me if I want to adopt?
I live on an acreage and don't have enough space for that many dogs, lol.
Thankfully I live in Canada. 😅

So Canada needs a similar initiative, eeh? 😜

Funny enough my husband's cousin adopted a dachshund puppy "to meet chicks at the park." It must have worked though because he's married with twins now, and they still have the dog!

I kind of always took the "get a dog to meet people" stories with a grain of salt, until one day I met a friend for coffee. He brought his dog, and we sat outside. While he was inside, I sat outside with his dog, and in like 5 minutes I met like three separate groups of people who wanted to stop and talk (and pet the dog). Actually, I'm not sure anyone walked by who didn't want to stop and introduce themselves to the dog (and by association, me). I'm not under any illusions that anybody actually wanted to talk to the random middle-aged guy sitting outside of a coffee shop -- the friendly golden retriever, on the other hand... was totally a magnet for potential human friends.

During the dot.com boom, I adopted a basset hound puppy. We were able to take her to the office each day. My beloved nerds would fight over who would get to walk her along the embarcadero in San Francisco because they met so many people!

There have been much much worse internet trends.
And probably not a lot that are better.
Do it.

I made the mistake of visiting NYC during Broadway Barks, a big fundraiser and adoption event. There were so many puppies and sweet pups on leashes wandering around waiting to find their human. My god I came so close to taking one home

Genuine question from a dog lover- how do these pups not spaz all the way out in all the commotion of the city? I never see them trying to climb over your head to escape, meanwhile my dogs can't contain their composure for anything ever!

When I get to the shelter I spend time with the dog. I get a feel for their body language and how they act. I also get them really comfortable with me. We take our time getting into the backpack and I make sure they're comfortable. In about 60 rides there was only one dog who wasn't happy being in the backpack, and I knew as soon as we got them in. In that situation we just took the dog out of the backpack.
Otherwise once the dogs are in they love it. They're snug and really close to my body. The bag was designed to act like a thunder blanket so it's very calming for them. And I make sure my attention is solely on them and their body during the ride.
But yeah, it's all been really cool to see how many dogs, some with traumatic histories, really take to being toted around in a dog backpack.

He's mentioned in the past that he spends the necessary time getting to know them and gaining their trust before venturing out.

Do you only do this for Best Friends or any other shelters? I work at a NYC shelter and feel like your services would help move some harder to move pups!

u/sansabeltedcow 1d ago
He’s done at least one other in NY and then one out in Arizona or somewhere. Reach out to him and maybe you can make something happen!

I know that there's an application process but I love the idea of you walking around holding a dog and when people say "oh, he's so cute," you just say, "actually, you can have him right now!" and hand them the bag.
Obviously this would not be good for the dogs, but the image is very funny.

Last week's video was probably the closest he came to that happening. They were in a coffee shop to get the pup cup, and a gentleman customer just connected with the dog, and looked up the shelter. Adopted the pupper literally the next day, and Bryan was there to help hand the leash over.

Thank you for highlighting how special all of these adoptable dogs are. Given how tiny she is (and the fact that she rocked the look while riding in the sling), I was not surprised she was quickly adopted. Thank you and your wife for making and editing these videos to bring joy to our tough days.

You are no longer allowed to post these where my wife can see them. We can't adopt all the dogs honey!! We only have finite space! And money!

Awww little baby only fitted into a sling bag. So happy for Moo Deng ☺️🥰 I adore your vids, in the UK and wish I could see you in NY doing your thing. Love to you and all the puppers you take out ☺️

I would end up keeping all these puppies if I even tried to do this. I'm an absolute pushover when it comes to puppies!

Your Polaroid collection must be the envy of all who see it. Also, like the new carrier drip.

Moo Deng has no thoughts, just vibes. Exactly how a baby should be. So glad she has been found and saved from a terrible life on the street!

Amazing. But also, what kind of product are you using, and how much does it take to get your hair looking like that? I'm jealous!

I think you should embroider "WANNA ADOPT ME?" On the side of your little puppy pouch.

I am genuinely curious, have you ever had a dog have an accident in your bag while carrying them around?

You didn’t take her to the park and run around? I’m heart broken, crestfallen, distraught!
J/k, I could never be upset about you being so good to these beautiful puppers.

Everytime I see your videos I just get filled with so much joy, I hope you know that. I am filled with so much hope for the world seeing the simple yet deep joy that carrying these sometimes forgotten about dogs around a big city brings you and the people you’re around.
I know it sounds cheesy, but I wish videos like this were the majority of what highly addictive social media algorythms pushed.
I know it sounds like hyperbole, and i understand that i dont know you personally and i probably never will. But I really have a deep love for you for doing this video series. You bring a lot of light to my life and hopefully everyone who sees this video and the countless ones I remember you’ve made. I think you have a gift for being able to share this so well.
I really appreciate you

I'm so happy to report that shortly after this ride, Moo Deng got a FLOOD of applications and was quickly adopted into a loving family within several days!
Moo's Backstory: Moo Deng came to Best Friends after being rescued from the street. She was found with a laceration along her back but we are not sure how she got it. Thankfully it has fully healed and it seems like there are no prolonged issues or sensitivities associated with it!
Attached is a recent photos of Moo Deng living the good life with her new family!
