Robot mower demo checklist: test the route between lawns, not just the open grass

For anyone comparing mowers for a front/back or split lawn, here's a planning checklist. This is based on installation documentation, not a hands-on comparison of models.

Before a demo, sketch the complete trip: charging station → first lawn → connecting passage → second lawn → return to the station.

For the connecting passage, record:

• The tightest usable width, including gates and corners.

• The surface: lawn, paving, loose gravel, exposed roots or a threshold.

• Any change in level or slope.

• Walls, fences, overhanging plants and other obstructions.

• Whether that section needs mowing or only transport.

Then ask the seller to demonstrate the exact proposed model doing the entire trip in both directions and returning to charge. Note every place it needs a rescue, a gate opened, or a change to the yard. Ask which layout changes are required and put them in the installation quote.

Check the manual for that exact model and installation method. A boundary-wire passage and a wire-free transport path aren't interchangeable specifications; don't borrow a minimum-width figure from another model's advert.

Husqvarna's own guidance illustrates why the installation details matter:

Boundary-wire passages: https://us-support.husqvarna.com/en/automower/KA-01710

EPOS work areas and transport paths: https://us-support.husqvarna.com/en/automower/KA-70385

If a seller can't demonstrate your route, send a video and dimensions to the manufacturer or dealer and ask for written guidance before committing. Include any remaining manual mowing or carrying between zones in the comparison.

Is the Navimow X430 really that quiet?

I've been in kind of an awkward mowing situation lately. I work full-time and have a kid to take care of, so the only time I can mow is usually between 8 and 9 PM. My old gas mower is a bit loud and there was some times my neighbor came over to complain, and let's just say that conversation didn't end well.

Now my mower is starting to fall apart anyway, so my wife and I figured it might finally be time to replace it with a robot mower. We are now looking at X430. I want to know if it is really that quiet as they describe on the website? Because I really don't want to mess with my neighbor again and I also need to keep things quiet since my kid is usually asleep by then.

And how has the mower performed after a long time of use? Please share your experience with x430 and we are also open to other recommendations. Thank you!

Keep grass under a swing set or switch the whole area to gravel?

I'm reworking the layout of my yard. It is already split into three zones by a sidewalk and driveway. So far my mower is working fine across different zones. I want to put a swing set in the side yard for my kids, but I'm guessing the grass underneath and around it will get worn down pretty fast by kids' feet. So I'm planning to turn the whole section into a gravel play area.

The thing I'm not sure about is whether my mower can pass that zone. If I gravel that whole play area, it cuts across the yard, and the mower would need to pass over the gravel from the front to continue its work in the back.

Has anyone set things up like this? My model is a navimow i210. Does it usually handle crossing a gravel strip okay, or does it tend to get stuck? Or maybe I just keep the grass around the swing.

Husqvarna 435X AWD won't turn on, white light around the rotary knob

Hi all,

Just recently installed my 435X AWD and had it running for 1 day. Unfortunately its a developing yard and conditions where a bit muddy after rain.

It got stuck and I had to clean mud off from the wheels after which I took it back to the charging station.

It suddenly lost bluetooth/cloud connection the next day and I shut it down using the menu on the mower. However it doesn't want to start up anymore. I get a white light around the rotary knob and when I press the knob for 3 seconds I hear 2 short beeps.

Any idea how to resurrect my new mower?

Thanks.

ps: I'm in Europe

Pick a robot mower for my yard

Getting my first robot mower and need some advice before I buy.

My yard's split with front and back. The backyard is about 6,000 sq ft with a decent slope, maybe 20 deg, and it also has a few mole holes. The front is smaller and almost flat, around 3,000 sq ft. I have a fence in between, and I really don't want to cut a gate and buy some kind of special mower gate.

I'm looking at either navimow i1206 AWD or i210 AWD. I think AWD is necessary for my slope with soft soil and all those holes.

My thought is that I'll let the mower handle the backyard most of the time automatically, like cutting twice a week. And once I need it to cut the front, i just move it manually. But 6,000 sq ft is kind of a max limit for i1206 AWD, so I'm considering whether to go for i210.

With my yard setup, what would you go with(also open to other options)? And how about mapping? I'm not sure whether my plan can be done through multiple mowing zones.

PNW challenges

I have a 1400sqft backyard and a similar size front yard. I live in the Pacific Northwest. It is very green, the yard is bounded with fence, one side of the house, a shed, lots of trees and bushes. There is a swing set in the yard.

I picked up the Sunseeker S4 from Costco. AI advised that lidar based units were preferable since the unit has to navigate below bushes and tree cover. This was a complete fail, most of the time the unit leaves the dock, turns around 180 degrees and declares a navigation failure. I tried three different dock locations. There are other problems, the wifi connectivity is weak and the unit does not work on "rainy days". It didn't say what a rainy day was, it was sunny at the time. This is the weather we have, it often rains at some point during the day but rarely the whole day. This morning it was foggy ... I turned on rain mode, but then it probably will try and operate in heavy rain and fail.

When it works, it does great navigating the yard and getting to most of it. I have slightly raised concrete pads and some uneven ground it seemed fine.

I'd be happy to run a wire it's not a big yard ... whatever it is, it does need to run unattended that is the whole point. Are there any devices that might be a better fit?

Why no mowing interval option?

As someone who lives in an area where rain isn't uncommon I find the existing automower schedules lacking. I generally only need to mow 2 times a week so currently if it rains on it's scheduled day it would wait a full week to mow. Why not give us the option of say a mowing interval? I could set it to 3 days and if it is raining on day 3, it makes it up on day 4. With how quiet and unobtrusive these things are I couldn't care less which days it mows, just that it does.

And yes I know I could just set it to mow every day or every other day to deal with this but it's unnecessary and just using up my battery faster.

Automower supporting multiple unconnected zones

Hello,

can you please suggest an automower without perimeter wire supporting multiple separate (unconnected) zones?

The idea is to physically move the automower to a second lawn area and then move back to base station once done.

I've had mine a week now, done 2 full cuts.

Early days, but very happy compared to my retired Landroid WR150 boundary wire machine.

Boundary mapping could be better, driving by Bluetooth on the phone is very imprecise and the machine doesn't appear to improve boundary detection by itself, so I'll have to do the boundary again when I'm in less of a rush.

Key question for me prior to purchase was if the software was locked to 2,000m2, neither the retailer or support would answer me. I have mapped 2,200m2 and while it shows orange - see screenshot - it accepted the map and schedule just fine.

Looks like we're averaging 160m2 per mower hour - excluding charging. 6-8 charge cycles to do the main 1600m2 lawn, so 2 days of daylight mowing to finish the job. It does continue from where it left off at least. The other 3 areas are not scheduled, they're manual for when the horses aren't on the lawn, but a schedule could look something like mon/Tue and Thur/Fri main lawn with Wednesday doing the other 3 areas. Turning around and avoiding obstacles is the main culprit for reducing the lawn coverage rate.

Husqvarna 430XH charging station: 28V at the contacts but no light, mower won’t charge

My dad gave me his old Automower 430XH. The mower turns on and I’ve set it up (PIN, date, time), but it won’t charge. It keeps telling me to place it in the charging station even though it’s docked, and the battery is almost dead. I also got a “temporary battery problem” message after restarting it.

What I’ve checked so far:

  • The outlet works
  • I’m getting 28V at the charging contacts with the mower docked
  • I cleaned the contacts on both the station and the mower (they were heavily oxidized)
  • I connected a short test wire from AR to AL, and still nothing

The LED on the charging station never lights up at all, not even flashing.

Is the station’s circuit board dead? Is there a fuse or anything else I should check before buying a new board or station? Any advice appreciated!

Anthbot M5 LIDAR

Hi everyone,

does anyone have long-term experience using the Anthbot M5 LIDAR?

If yes, is it any good?

In particular:

- how does it treat your lawn, especially at the end of every line mowed when it performs a loopy 180 degree?

- edging: how does i perform there and does it really perform better if you manually adjust lawn edges?

- does anybody have experience using it on Sir Walter Buffalo lawn on clayish soil?

Thx

European peeps... how do you put your robot "to bed" for the winter?

It's my first season with mine and I'm keen to know how to let it hibernate...

Mine is a ecovacs Goat O600, and I’m overthinking the whole base station/RTK situation a little... Some people say to bring everything inside, but I’ve also seen people leave the dock and RTK out, so I’m not sure what’s actually best.

I’m planning to give the mower a good clean, check the blades and battery, then pack everything away properly.

What do you guys usually do for winter? Any little things I should make sure not to miss?

My zero-turn has been collecting dust in the barn for 2 months.

We're on roughly 0.75 acres out near Nashville, TN. It's a typical rolling Middle Tennessee layout - mostly tall fescue, an open slope out front, and a back section weaving around four mature red oaks and a split-rail fence.

I was burning close to 2.5 to 3 hours every Saturday bouncing on an old zero-turn, usually drenched in sweat by 10 AM. Most residential robot mowers top out on tiny suburban quarter-acre patches, so I had written the whole category off until looking into Navimow X430.

Been running it since May. I have it scheduled 5 days a week in zones, and it chews through the whole lot with zero issues. The turf honestly looks healthier than when I cut it myself - shaving off micro-clippings every 48 hours completely stopped the grass from shocking and yellowing in the July humidity. My neighbor even stopped at the end of the driveway to ask if I switched lawn services.

My riding mower is literally gathering cobwebs in the shed. For those running bots on larger properties, how are you speeding up the leftover perimeter trimming?

Mammotion Luba 3: Why I Can't Recommend It | All The Issues I Encountered

Thumbnail
youtube.com
2 Upvotes

Documenting my UNSPONSORED experience with the Luba 3 over the past 4 months...putting this video out there so others are aware of what to expect. Some of these issues i've seen covered in other videos, but some I have not seen come to light yet.

Issues:

  • Destroys your lawn whenever it makes turns
  • Omni wheels are awful on hills/wet/partially seeded areas
  • Android & iOS Apps are different in many ways, doesn't connect then disconnects often
  • Gets lost or stuck in areas it shouldn't be in
  • Firmware can't be rolled back (huge concern)
  • Customer Service was not the least bit helpful and wasted hours of my life
  • AI Obstacle avoidance is not as savvy as I would have hoped
  • No way to drive this remotely if it gets stuck from afar
  • Traction Control non-existent...needs to be able to detect if the wheels are slipping so it doesn't further destroy your lawn
  • App doesn't always have the location of the robot if it gets stuck and shuts itself off
  • Many issues with mapping and having the robot cut a zone past a fence (this was fine in June, firmware nixed this in August)
  • Doesn't auto-return to home after an error, just shuts off and you can't drive it via bluetooth after 30 mins?!
  • Can't control the exact distance to the edge (My Lymow and Eufy E18 offers these options)

Let me know if you guys have experienced any, some of all of these?

My automower gets more questions from neighbors than I expected

Post image
18 Upvotes

I set up a robot mower a few weeks ago bc I was tired of planning my weekends around mowing. For context, I'm using a navimow h2 on my front yard, backyard, and a narrow side passage.

A few neighbors have stopped while it's running to ask like

"Does that thing actually work?"

"How does it know where to go?"

"Is it remote controlled?"

One guy watched it for a couple of minutes like it was putting on a show lol.

The street question is fair, so I keep the mapped boundary well inside the sidewalk and check the first few runs whenever I change the map. It hasn't been completely hands-off either, I still move toys and other random stuff out of the way, but I'm spending much less time planning actual mowing sessions.

My cat has had a harder time adjusting. At first she followed it from a safe distance and hid whenever it turned around. Now she mostly ignores it, although she still watches it like it's the least competent predator in the neighborhood.

Just curious about whether your neighbors stop asking about it lol. I'm fine with it because it really does my mowing work.
