A friend just shared that Vego Fest (a vegetarian/vegan festival) is on this Sunday in outer Melbourne.

Anyone been? Is it worth trekking out to the outer burbs for?

Sunshine coast/coolum beach recs

Hi team!

My family are holidaying in Coolum Beach for a week and would love some recommendations for eating out! We're staying in a holiday house with a kitchen but it'd be nice to eat something I haven't cooked. ☺️

TIA!

I need advice

Hi guys idk who this will reach or if u will even see it, but it’s 2am and like most nights, I am finding myself unable to sleep.

What does a person do when the world is this quiet, but so deafeningly loud?

I feel all of the cries of animals that are begging for help; I feel their pain in my chest and flesh and bones and it keeps me awake wondering why existence is so cruel. I get this feeling during the day also, but not as bad as nighttime where I have no distractions.

I feel sick to my stomach knowing their cries will be unheard, and their pleads for their lives will not change the outcome of their deaths. I lay here in my bed with a blanket over me and feel guilt overwhelm me.

I feel sick knowing nobody will care as much as I do, and that there is nothing I can do to save them. Nobody will ever listen. I am horrified, and the longer I am vegan the more horror consumes me.

What am I supposed to do? I am terrified. Their pain reaches me and I can’t save them. I feel helpless.

Halloween lollies?

This is my first Halloween I’ll be vegan and I don’t know what lollies/chocolates/treats are okay to have. What are some options, preferably from Woolies or Cole’s.

Has anyone had Tofu Go shipped to Aus?

If so.. did you have to pay any additional customs duties or taxes? Haven’t found it stocked in Aus but open to that if anyone knows where? Looks like a good snack option!!!

Tastes revolting

My usual soy milk was unavailable so I picked up a carton of Woolworths macro organic soy milk without reading the ingredients. Turns out it has 17% soybeans.

Tastes powdery. It ruins my morning oatmeal and induces nausea. I do hate to waste good but this has to go.

Maybe others like it, but I certainly can't recommend it.

what is the best yogurt!

hi all - recently switched to a plant based diet after being vegetarian! I really relied on Greek yogurt in the past for protein - and I also loved the taste. What are the best recommendations, ideally with a good amount of protein and a good taste!

A Lovely Surprise

Today I had the loveliest surprise at work. There was a morning tea on and two people had baked delicious vegan cakes. A lemon poppyseed and a hummingbird cake.

I went to thank one of the bakers (who is not vegan) and she was gushing to me about how she had baked it and the ingredients you can use that are vegan in a cake. I just had a happy grin while she was talking - a non-vegan was so excited about vegan baking!

Oh to fill all workplaces with people like this.

Smoked melting cheese from a tin of cannellini beans: 10 minutes, no cashews, no coconut oil

Post image
128 Upvotes

Wanted something gooey for cheese on toast without buying a block of vegan cheese. This recipe is cannellini beans blended with plant milk, olive oil, lemon and tapioca starch, then stirred in a saucepan for a few minutes until it goes thick, glossy and stretchy like fondue. A couple of drops of liquid smoke at the end make it taste like smoked cheese.

Serves 4 · 5 min prep, 5 min cook, then 10 min to cool slightly

  • 110 g cooked cannellini beans, drained
  • 250 g full-bodied unsweetened plant milk
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp tapioca starch
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • a generous pinch of salt (to taste, can be added also after cooking if not enough)
  • a pinch of garlic powder
  • 2 drops liquid smoke (optional)
  1. Blend everything except the liquid smoke until completely smooth.
  2. Pour into a saucepan and cook for a few minutes, stirring constantly, until it thickens and turns glossy and stretchy. It starts thin and then thickens quickly, so keep scraping the bottom so it doesn’t stick and burn.
  3. Off the heat, stir in the liquid smoke if you’re using it. 2 drops is plenty.
  4. Let it cool until lukewarm, then spread it thickly on toast or use it anywhere you’d want melted cheese.

Keeps max 3 days in a closed container in the fridge. It firms up as it cools.

Recipe with step photos and video: https://veganhacks.food/en/recipes/smoked-melting-cheese/

Enjoy!

Why does Aus have such few vegan products compared to other “western” countries?

I dont mean this to be an insulting question but I’ve lived in 6 different countries (US, Aus, South Africa, Greece, Germany, Scotland) and with the exception of South Africa (where you could barely find tofu), Aus has the fewest vegan products available in the grocery stores.

It’s weird to me because Aussies seem pretty environmentally conscious so I would think there would be more demand and it’s a wealthy country where I would think there would be room for investment in developing plant based products…. but there is only a tiny selection in the grocery stores.

I’m not sure if it’s just because I moved here recently and there seems to be a global trend against veganism so maybe options are disappearing in other places too.

Plant milk for coffee in packaging that can be recycled

As per the title, given we can't recycle Tetrapaks in our council, I'm looking for options for plant milks where packaging can be recycled. Personally not a fan of almond milk in coffees but don't mind oat or soy.

I've been getting Inside Out but have been put off by the number of times I've found mould in the caps of their bottles (so gross). Vitasoy Calci Plus isn't bad though it's curdling a bit when I make coffee. Tried Nimbus Oat Milk but it tasted like cardboard.

Anyone have any other recommendations?

Wine Bars in Melbourne with vegan options?

Hey guys! Google has failed me a little on this one but I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for wine bars in Melbourne (preferably CBD or Richmond, but happy to travel), that have good vegan options? I’m struggling a bit to find anything around these areas. Thank you!!

Where's the smoked tofu?

Smoked tofu is super common in many supermarkets in Europe, why not here?

It's such a great staple to use in vegan cooking, great texture and flavour and I doubt it would be expensive to make at a larger scale? So, where is it?

Sweet and Sour Tofu!

Thumbnail

I based it off this recipe:

https://www.eatfigsnotpigs.com/sweet-and-sour-tofu/ but I add a splosh of vegan oyster sauce and a few splashes of Maggi liquid seasoning.

A handy hint, fry off your tofu, then keep it in the oven on about 180 while you cook the veg. The extra baking gives it a noice chew.

I make the sauce during the day when I get a random burst of energy, then keep it in a lidded container in fridge. Then at dinner time, I just have to shake it up and pour it over. 💚

Vegan or not? 'natural chicken flavour'

I bought these for my wife without checking the ingredients. We had some at the Hyatt in Melbourne and I thought it was a meaningful gift but the ingredient list suggests it's potentially not vegan. Their website just lists the ingredients as 'spices'.

We contacted the Royal Nut Company over a week ago, they forwarded the email to another department who hasn't responded yet.

I'm fifty fifty on it.
