no politics Optus hiking their prepaid prices again... any recommendations for a cheaper (or better) provider?

When I first started with optus, the 365 prepaid deal was $180, now its going up to $395.

I just want a decent deal with a decent amount of data that doesn't cost a ridiculous amount.

Cost of living is killing me man

Aldi mobile seems better. But comparing plans is a nightmare.

8

u/Pentemav 4h ago

Aldi has also just increased their prices too.

I'm still on their $15/mo plan that is now up to $23/mo... I mean $28/mo. FFS.

Might be time to switch to $289/year so at least it's longer between price increases

I pay monthly for Aldi prepaid, and it works out at $276 per year which is cheaper than the one year plan on Boost. (I like Boost and used to be with them but like saving money even more, while savings may be small, it all adds up.)

u/IntroductionSnacks 4h ago

Boost is $300 for 290GB and 1 year expiry.

u/ExpertOdin 4h ago

Costco currently has these for $220 and you get a $30 Costco voucher if you live near one. Membership is $65 so it still ends up cheaper

cheap fuel as a bonus too

2

u/tronixlabs 4h ago

and they switched to coke from pepsi. Hot dog and a drink, $2. Love it.

The switch away from Pepsi is the only negative.

2

u/BrainTekAU 4h ago

which used to be 240.. but they got acquired by telstra sooooo

6

u/HeftyArgument 4h ago

on the upside they get to use the actual telstra network, not the wholesale one.

They did that before, that’s always been their schtick

u/Sneekeegeekee 2h ago

It used to be so cheap. $120? But it's just gone up year on year, by a lot.

There are always plans for new customers only, just buy one of those
365 days plans are often the cheapest and least hassle when it comes to switching

Dodge the lazy tax. Loyalty does not pay

Agreed. Ozbargain is where I find them.

Dodge the lazy tax. Loyalty does not pay

Before this they always offered me pretty good discounts for resubbing. So I'm looking at a big price increase and potentially no discount. I'll have to look at changing when my plan expires next year.

In still on woolworths $25 20gb monthly plan which I believe they're cancelling (soon?). Its definitely more expensive than other 365 plans but the 10% discount makes it almost free.

3

u/dav_oid 3h ago

Its now $10 1st month then $30 for 30GB, or $35 for 50GB.

Compares with Felix (Vodafone): $30 for 25GB, $35 for 50GB, $40 unlimited.

If you shop at Woolworths and get the 10% off, then its cheaper.

I got an email saying if I switch it to an automatic monthly payment I can stay on that plan.. if not then I have to switch.

1

u/biteme1982 33m ago

Don't believe it. That's what Aldi said (I think last year?) When they upped their prices. Fast forward a few months and I get notified I'm getting a price increase anyway.

2

u/monique752 3h ago

My understanding is that if you're already on that monthly plan, you can stay on it? Could be wrong.

6

u/Naughtiestdingo 4h ago

I paid $199 for the entire year. Gets me 70gb of data per month and unlimited calls and text. Works out to be $16.50 a month. That’s with Kogan mobile

3

u/BrotherWildness 4h ago

I also had Kogan for a few years because they were the cheapest I could find for 1 year prepaid. But I ended up switching becsuse the service was terrible when I would visit family in more rural (but not remote) areas.

4

u/Mattimeo144 2h ago

But I ended up switching becsuse the service was terrible when I would visit family in more rural (but not remote) areas.

This is the reason why I continue to suck up the $300/y for Boost's full Telstra network (not wholesale).

2

u/Naughtiestdingo 4h ago

I haven’t had any issues with it luckily. My service only seems to drop out when everyone else’s does. When I do visit people rurally where there is no service I’m usually using wifi

3

u/BLAGTIER 4h ago

More expensive for a worse plan.

3

u/Blarzgh 4h ago

I've been trying Woolworths mobile or whatever it's called. Price was competitive, you also get a once a month 10% woollies discount (use it or lose it, but it refreshes every month) which can offset the cost of it indirectly, if you do your shopping in big batches rather than a trickle like I do.

2

u/monique752 3h ago

So annoying that the shop has to be in-store. I do big shops online and that would be ideal.

2

u/Master_Halt 4h ago

One pass mobile $150 365 day

3

u/BLAGTIER 4h ago

Without the first year promotion it is $200 and on Optus's network. So half the price, same network and more data compare to going with Optus direct.

2

u/moleytron 4h ago

my first thing to try would be to contact optus and ask for a discount especially if you have been with them for a while. I missed a couple of bills whilst I was in hospital at the start of the year and once I called them they gave me a 25% discount to help get me back on my feet. Just did similar with my internet provider, just got $20 off a month because I called them and said I'd switch if they didn't give me a discount to what another provider is offering.

From some googling just on plan prices and data allowance looks like kogan has the best prices though I know nothing about their coverage or customer service.

2

u/ichoochoochooseyooou 4h ago

Kogan mobile. Yearly plans with unlimited calls and text - $159 for 250g, $179 for 400gb, $205 for 500gb. Been with them for a loooong them. No issues what so ever

1

u/SirCabbage 9m ago

Unless you happen to have a phone they are too lazy to verify

2

u/cantwejustplaynice 4h ago

I recently had to buy a prepaid service, ALDI was the best after I hunted around all day.

2

u/Ash3214 4h ago

I'm using Felix. $40/m unlimited data at 40Mbps using Vodafone network.

1

u/dav_oid 3h ago

I started on Felix 25GB for $25 about 6 months ago.
It recently rose to $30, and 50GB from $30 to $35.

2

u/BarbarousErse 2h ago

You could try “Better life mobile”. They’re a social enterprise started to make phone plans affordable for unhoused people. They run on the same Telstra wholesale network as mate, boost, etc.

3

u/xFlameAngel 2h ago

Ive been with BetterLife for years, one of thier original customers (or so they say) and its great.

1

u/BarbarousErse 2h ago

Good to know! I’m with a different Telstra wholesale one but I imagine the coverage is pretty similar

1

u/veritas_mendax 8m ago

FYI - Mate and Boost are on different Telstra networks. Boost is on the retail Telstra network, Mate (and every other Telstra MVNO other than boost) is on the wholesale Telstra network

1

u/BarbarousErse 6m ago

Oh for real? Good to know!

I wish they let their wholesale customers access visual voicemail 🥲 I wonder if boost has it I’m gonna check

2

u/jimmyjay31 1h ago

Kogan 220Gb eSIM for $149 (voda)
I buy deals like this for my kids phones

2

u/ICallItFootball 4h ago

i have boost 365 expiring in November! it was about $250

2

u/Thebandroid drives a white commodore station wagon. 4h ago

Closer to $300 now, and it’s their only option for the year. You can get half a year for worse value

1

u/ICallItFootball 4h ago

you will find the 365 days one on special- i saw few on costco a couple of months back. But i think those are for new customers.

1

u/coffee_collection 4h ago

+1 for boost. Its telstra without the price tag. $365 for 360g

1

u/ballimi 4h ago

Topcashback has a 50 dollar discount for Boost's 6 month expiry 160GB plan.

1

u/Shannonimity 4h ago

Amaysim does 200mbps on the Optus network prepaid for cheap

2

u/dav_oid 3h ago

Amaysim:

200GB for $270 (365 days) = 16.7 GB for $22.5 per month.

1

u/mdem5059 4h ago

If you bundle internet with mobile while grabbing the EOFY she discount, Aussie broadband are great.

I only post $15 a month with 45g of data.

1

u/juicyman69 4h ago

Coles and Amaysim come to mind.

1

u/cal_sta 3h ago

Amaysim $199 with $75 cash back. 240gb, 365 days. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/978236

What is 'a decent amount of data' to you?

I have Moose Mobile, which is $23/month with 30GB. The price goes up if you add more data. You get a big discount on the first 6 months.

30GB/month would work out to be $222 for the first year.

1

u/Budget-Leg-453 40m ago

I was with moose for awhile and rate them. I had to move back on to a Telstra wholesaler (Woolies) because Optus isn’t great in my house for some reason but I do live regionally

1

u/thewhirlwindmobility 2h ago

god that $180 to $395 jump is obscene, i remember when the yearly prepaids were actually a decent hack

i switched my mum over to one of the smaller providers that runs on the full telstra network, got her 25gb a month for something stupid like $22

i'm paying a bit more for mine cos i chew through data but even then it's miles better than what optus is pulling

pixel knocked my router off the shelf mid-meeting last week though so maybe i shouldn't be giving tech advice

1

u/rustoren 2h ago

At least you get the added bonus of the speeds being capped on the prepaid plans.

1

u/yanansawelder 1h ago

Lyca Mobile seem to be pretty decent at the moment, 365 prepaid 900gb only $220 for new customers.

1

u/assassn_gallic316 21m ago

Depending how much data you need, there are a lot of options but you need to churn every 6 months or so.

Almost all of the optus resellers charge around $15 per month for around 20-30gb on prepaid. is one such example.

1

u/RedditSly 19m ago

If you want Telstra (100% network) I use the 365 days prepaid. It is t the cheapest but offers the full Telstra network and cheaper than any of the big 3
