Reminder: No job postings, this is not your resume dump.

Having to remove a lot of posts lately and I just wanted to elaborate why this is essentially the only rule here.

There is an extremely high chance of you getting scammed, underpaid, information stolen, or otherwise taken advantage of. Reddit is a semi-anonymous platform and with that comes a dangerous game of trusting a randomly generated username with your career/livelihood. If you've received a DM from someone claiming to have a job for you, do your homework. Please don't send pictures of your licence, passport, etc. to random Reddit accounts claiming to have a job.

Odd jobs: - https://www.airtasker.com/au/jobs/ - Facebook community pages e.g. "Richmond Community Board", "Buy/Sell/Swap" groups

Facebook can bear the same risk of anonymity, but it's a little better as it's getting harder and harder to make a "fake" Facebook profile, and a lot of these pages are privated and actively moderated by members of those local communities. Please read their rules as some only allow job advertisers to make posts and workers can only comment.

I know times are tough but really this is not the place. Feel free to discuss below, happy to have a conversation. Thanks for reading.

being left out at the workplace

hi everyone, im writing this as im a little sad about what's going on at my workplace. For context, i work as probably the least desirable job in the entire world as a dishwasher for a fine dining restaurant. As an international student from a so called "third world country", I know im fighting an uphill battle for any decent job, so sure I have made peace with it, im doing this just so i can get by and get through school. But every time when the shift is over, all the staffs jolly around and sometimes go out together for some eats or drinks, and im never invited, and people were generally avoiding me. Im saddest when one time I caught up with everyone outside, as they were about to go get food, the air changed immediately when im there. Understood what's going on, I excused myself and went the other way. Only just a few minutes later, we ran into each other again on the streets as they were heading for eats. I stood next to the head chef, he glanced at me and said absolutely nothing. Idk what im supposed to feel, may be im overly sensitive. I came in and did my job, was friendly enough with everyone. May be no one wants to be friends with the stinky dishie i reckon 😂

If you are looking for job - be proactive!

Hey everyone

Just want to share one little tip. The old fashioned way of approaching the decision maker directly still works! So please do!

I work in a big organisation and yesterday my boss received an email from a graduate looking for work. And now is meeting him for coffee next week! He was impressed with the attitude! That person at least has a chance at the informal interview.

So if you are applying for jobs it’s still worth it to email your resume to your future boss directly.

Good luck everyone!

Defence Forces A Decent Option?

Hey guys,

I'm 46 and the recent advent of AI has made a lot of my more disparate programming skills and roles...if not redundant, it's certainly made looking for further roles in tech very hard at this point. Only a few interviews in 3 months and while I have savings, I don't want to deplete them forever.

I am, because they allow older age applicants up to 55 or so, considering joining the Aus defence forced for 4 or so years at this point. I can be trained up in cyber security, be on a good wage, and at the end of my term have security clearance that would allow me to find well-paid contract work.

I don't have kids or a wife, although still looking for a partner...only downside that I can see is the possibility of being send remotely to another post, outside of Melbourne where I currently live.

I'm not 100% loving the idea but if I end up with a qualification at the end and some mates, maybe it won't be too bad.

Does anyone else out there have any experience of this? Or considered it? How did it turn out for you?

Advice Psyche me up to work casual retail after 20+ years in office 9-to-5s

Burnt out and quit my job earlier this year and moved in with my other half who's been taking care of essential costs since then.

I'm in my 40s and have worked constantly since I was 18. I thought this might be the opportunity to take a step back from full-time work, and 6 months ago probably would have been happy with a casual or part time opportunity.

However since then while applying and interviewing for roles, I've realised I'm not just after a pay cheque, I do want a job I enjoy and want to grow in, and I do want stability. I've come close but missed out on a couple of full-time roles I was keen for (got merit pool'ed at least, but no guarantee anything will come of it).

We're doing okay financially but it's tight; an emergency or unexpected cost could screw us over. And also it sucks just not having any personal income. So I need to get back to work, and I'll be starting as a casual at Dan Murphy's next month.

I'm struggling with it. I should be grateful for the opportunity, the income, the experience I don't already have. But it feels like I've taken a huge step backwards. I'm also somewhat intimidated at the thought of dealing with aggressive customers, theft, security issues.

Anyone who can help put the positive spin on the situation I need? Can any other current/ex employees give some pros/cons to the casual work? Or the typical environment in one of these stores?

Trying my best not to be a downer when I could still have nothing!

(throwaway for privacy)

Mums working as air traffic controller?

• Upvotes

Hi all. Just wondering if any mums worked or has gotten into air traffic controller after giving birth and how did that go? I’m looking into a different job where I don’t have to go to uni as much as I want to go to uni, the thought of having a debt is not in my list and I am looking into air traffic control. My dream of becoming a flight attendant when I was younger has now passed but still want to try working at the airport. Idk why too

Two job offers, same pay but completely different roles. What would you do?

I’m in my late 30s and got made redundant from my corporate marketing job earlier this year. Job hunting has been a real struggle, so I feel very fortunate to finally be in a position where I have two offers to choose from. Never thought I’d be making a post like this, but here we are.

The problem is, I genuinely can’t decide what to do.

Option 1: Storeperson at Woolworths Group
- Full-time, 5 days a week
- Big company, so potentially more opportunities to move into other roles internally
- Completely different from my previous corporate experience
- Physical warehouse work

Option 2: Sales admin at a smaller company
- Part-time, 3 days a week (8 hours a day)
- Same annual salary as the storeperson role
- More in line with my previous experience
- Smaller company, so probably less room to grow

The sales admin role sounds like the better deal. Same money for three days instead of five, and it’s something I’m more familiar with.

But part of me keeps thinking Woolworths might be better in the long run. It’s a massive company and I’m wondering if getting my foot in the door could eventually lead to other opportunities, maybe moving into an office or corporate role.

Then again, I have no idea how easy internal transfers actually are or how long it might take.
I’m not against changing careers or starting from the bottom in a completely different industry. I’m just trying to figure out which option makes more sense long term at this stage of my life.

Has anyone worked at Woolworths Group or another big company and managed to move from a warehouse role into something else?

I've been applying for so many positions from hospo, receptionist etc and nothing. I dont want casual work, it needs to be full time, as I want to purchase a house in 6 months.

Advice ‘Hired’ during interview. Red flag or am I overthinking it?

Hi, I've been job searching for about 3 months, applied hundreds of times and only had a handful of interviews.
Two days ago I interviewed for an entry-level call centre role handling general inquiries for a private health insurance company. I'd actually applied for the same role months ago and was rejected after the face to face interview, but this time I had a different interviewer.

I didn't think I did anything exceptional, but at the end she straight up said "You know what, I like you and I'll just say yes to you now." I was taken aback since no interview in 3 months had even progressed, let alone ended in a yes on the spot. I got the official offer this morning, accepted this afternoon, and start training on the 26th.

Looking back, it all feels strange given how quick it was compared to other applications where I'd wait months just to be rejected. They seem to be hiring a lot, though it looked to me like they're expanding rather than dealing with high turnover (feel free to correct me).

For anyone with more workforce experience, is this normal or a red flag? I'm grateful to land a job in this market, I'm just sceptical and sus of the whole ordeal.

Open Question Another Career Change Post

Hi All,

I am in my mid thirties and am contemplating a career pivot. I am a licensed electrician with extensive telecommunications experience and project management experience.

I will be at a point in the next 2 years where I will be either mortgage free or very close to.

I am considering getting my Coxswain licence and progressing through the tiers.

My question is for anybody with a Coxswain licence, where has it led to career wise?

For internationals working in Australia, how do you overcome feeling insecure about your English in the workplace?

Hi everyone! I’m an international, and for context, I’m currently doing an internship at a company where, to put it mildly, the workplace is predominantly white. I’m literally the only non-white person in the office, English is my second language, and I have a somewhat American accent.

During meetings, I often feel reluctant to share my thoughts because I’m insecure about my English. I don’t want to make silly grammatical mistakes in front of people who are experts in their fields, nor do I want to make myself stand out even more as the most foreign person in the room. Sometimes, I feel like I’m more focused on how I sound than on what I actually want to say.

So, my question is for both internationals working in Australia and locals, how do you deal with feeling different in the workplace while still having the confidence to speak up and contribute?
And for the locals, do you actually care if someone makes grammatical mistakes in a professional setting? Does it come across as unprofessional if someone stutters, pauses frequently, or struggles to find the right words, particularly because English isn’t their first language?

Story / Rant The number of SDR and Business Development roles opening in Sydney is crazy. I’ve applied for around 50 this week , and more keep appearing every 24–48 hours. Are companies genuinely hiring this heavily, or are some of these just ghost jobs?

Open Question Security guard and piercings?

Hey everyone, I'm about to start my security training and had a question: I eventually want to get a bridge piercing and already have stretched ears but I'm wondering how frowned upon it would be to security employers? I know it would depend on the company and role, but I'm just trying to gauge what others' experiences are.

Most promising career choices

I’m weighing career options that have a guaranteed 150k+ within 5 years of starting, after uni. Because i’m considering a course change.

What i’m hearing right now is: Mining engineer, electrical engineer, software engineer (though threatened by AI), actuary, investment banker and lawyer.

I’d like to hear other peoples thoughts

I’m excluding medicine and trade because those aren’t options for me

Advice Experience working as a Court Monitor?

Hi all. I’ve had a look online but can’t really find much. I’ve been offered a role as a Court Monitor working in Victoria. I have a background in law and sociology. I also did some parliamentary reporting so good at transcribing, summarising etc.

Has anyone else worked in a role like this? What can I expect? What tips do you have?

I am rather nervous but also very excited!! I was out of work for 12 months so this is great!! 💼 Hip hip hooray!
