Plus console controller compatibilities

i want to buy an Atari plus console around Christmas season and since I plan on mostly playing 7800 games, I’ll need a two button controller.

for some reason, the Atari.com website lists cx78+ wired as working with 2600, 2600+, and 7800, excluding 7800+. that doesn’t seem right, can anyone confirm this? I would prefer a wired controller, and I’ve seen a lot of people saying their cx78+ wireless stopped pairing randomly.

on the other hand, it lists the cx40+ wired as only working on 2600/+. So, does the 7800/+ have different plugs or something and that’s why it can’t take these wired controllers? That doesn’t seem to make sense since you still have to plug in the dongles for wireless. Can anyone confirm any of this? If both plus consoles play each other’s games, why wouldn’t all the controllers also be compatible? Jeez.

Edit it seems like the best option for using Genesis controllers is the Seagull 78 from Edladdin, which works on original 7800. One Atariage post says “it’s been reported” (WTF? No source) that it’ll work on 7800 plus… can anyone confirm this?

It works fine on my 7800, 7800+ and 2600 (4 switch and light sixer. It also says so on the website you linked. Also pick up a pair of paddles (wired). Wait for Black Friday prices and check Woot periodically.

What works fine? Cx78+, cx40+ or Seagull 78?

Yes wired. Wireless works great also.

According to this thread, the 7800 mega adapter doesn’t work well with Genesis controllers  https://forums.atariage.com/topic/378663-7800-genesis-controller-compatibility/. Genesis controllers are easily available new (newly produced) which is why is prefer that, instead of dealing with trying to find a good used master system one.

this   Mega 7800 Adapter  sold in the Atari Age Store . Unfortunately this adapter only works with the 7800 not the  780 0+

Mega  7800 adapter … Perhaps the receiver was not working correctly but both A and B butto ns did Run, Shoot, Jump. This was very con f usi ng !

The  behaviour of your Mega7800 you've seen is normal  on a 7800+ with a Genesis pad …A button triggers B button too and so on.

It's  the 2600+ / 7800+ that is the issue the mega 7800 works great with OG 7800 hardware

Where do you see “several people” saying it works for them? I see one person saying “it’s reported to work.”

My mistake. Some of the comments are not clear

Here you can see someone using it on a 2600+

https://atariprojects.org/2023/11/25/purchase-a-retrohq-mega7800-controller-adapter-for-atari-7800-5-10-mins/

Reviews here mention that it works on 2600+:

https://store.atariage.com/products/7800-mega-controller-adapter

I did find some discussion though that there were issues on 7800+ but not 2600+. Firmware update was supposed to fix the issues.

I can't find confirmation that the firmware update ever fixed this so you may be right to avoid this unless you get confirmation. You could try posting at Atariage or just get the Seagull.

The product description for wired CX-78 is bad because they didn’t update it after the 7800+ was introduced. It works just fine with the 7800+ and 2600+ PM edition

The wired CX78+ controller released shortly after the 2600+, before the 7800+, so not mentioning compatibility with the 7800+ is likely just an outdated oversight on the website. All the Plus line controllers are designed to be fully backwards and forwards compatible.

The only actual issue you'll run into with Plus line controllers is that the wireless ones emit a low buzzing noise on very early 2600 consoles (heavy and light sixers).
