Show and Tell [OC] 3 weeks in

Just about 3 weeks into the re scape. I've used a base layer of aquatic compost mixed with old substrate/akadama and lots of root feeders in this one as trimming stems was getting a little too much. The front is filling out quickly, but the back is still progressing slowly. I'm hoping that once the plants have their roots settled, theres an explosion of growth.

I'm running this at about 28°C for the betta, but I'm planning on moving him to a smaller tank due to his poor eyesight, so I can make sure he's eating well and wont have the stress of other fish around him. That'll leave me with the space in this setup for some German blue rams, a species that I've not kept but have wanted to for quite some time.

I've also replaced a red tiger lotus with a Nymphaea peru puerto maldonado, which I'm very excited to watch grow.

Last picture before the dark start.

Dennerle 60l tank in low-iron glass with matching cabinet.

Since the cabinet only has openings for hoses at the back, I decided to simply place the external filter next to it.

Otherwise, the hose would directly touch the cold outer wall and unnecessarily cool down the water.

In 2-3 weeks the light will come back on and I will start planting.

Planned stocking:

8-10 Nannostomus sp. Amaya

10-12 Corydoras pygmaeus

I’m not sure if anyone else has noticed, but some aquatic plants have already developed leaves that resemble their submerged form.

This shows 2 months of growth. Mini trim in the middle.

Just waiting for a good day to spend a few hours and clean it all up.

But I'm loving every bit of it.

And the plants will now support any future builds.

Just finished completely redoing my tank- had it going for 10 yrs but this is my first real attempt at an aquascape. Upgraded lighting as well cos some of my plants were sad looking, and added the taller ones in the back. I feel like I def need more plants for the background, not sure if I should wait to see how current ones do or move things around. It's def still an upgrade for me but I'd still be interested in any tips or even if you'd have done something different just in case I feel like tearing it up again in the future.

my first aquascape! was planning to add some gravel for texture later but want to get the rocks and stones in the right places first. any advice?

the wood on the left is 3 separate parts (trunk, with two pieces of spider wood resting beside it) and the wood on the right is 2 bits of spider wood. I’m going for an riverscape with this one, it’ll have a gourami and 2 loaches.

Seeking Suggestions Plant management and animal suggestion?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hey! I've had this hospital tank running for over a year now. It's quite stable I'd say. I am moving places and will only be taking this tank with me, leaving the bigger tanks at home with family.

I would like suggestions if this would be suitable for any living animals?

I also feel like the water lettuce is outcompeting the other plants for nutrients as others melt faster / have been developing holes in their leaves - does this make sense? Should I get rid of some water lettuce?

Details below:
Tank: LAQUAL 3 gallon
Filter: Nicrew HOB slim filter for up to 5 gallon tanks
Heater: Orlushy submersible heater (78 Fahrenheit)
Light: Nicrew C10, full spectrum with timer

Scape: (plant names may not entirely be accurate)
Fluval stratum
Petrified wood pieces from local aquarium
Water lettuce
Rosette sword
Bacopa
Staurogyne repens

Fluids n stuff:
Flourish advance
Flourish
Pristine
Prime
API algaefix
API root tabs

Thank you!

Seeking Suggestions 2 months update on my first tank, how should I trim the stems?

Thumbnail

Yeah so I've been growing out my rotalas and now it's time to trim them. I'm thinking of an asymmetric wave with the low in the middle where the hra is, something like a valley, with the higher high in the right corner and lower high in the left corner. What do you guys think?

For those who want to know, it's an ADA 45p, so basically a nano tank (32L). The light is a week aqua m-series 45 with shades and custom app-settings.

I'm happy with how the carpet turned out in 8 weeks, I mean it was pretty much filled at 5 weeks already, and now it's like REALLY filled in (and dense).

Show and Tell [OC] Aquascaping against an “aquatic bulldozer”. My high-tech 75G ecosystem for a male Mississippi map turtle.

Thumbnail

I’ve been in the aquarium hobby for a little over two years (since June 2024), this is my second planted tank ever. Up until now, I’ve been a ghost on Reddit, Instagram, and the forums. No content creation, no YouTube channel, just quietly reading threads, absorbing information, and building in silence.

My journey started with a 40G grow-out for a baby turtle, where I incorporated live plants and community fish to see what worked. The only rule I brought from a brief attempt 15 years ago was that turtle tanks need oversized filtration (I ran a Fluval 207 on that 40G). What I learned there became my Version 2.0: a 75-gallon high-tech ecosystem where a Mississippi Map Turtle, community fish, predatory fish, oddballs, and delicate macro-inverts live alongside each other.

Why I Built This

  1. To build a living window for my kids: I wanted them to learn firsthand about nature's balance, ecological zoning, and the responsibility of caring for animals.

  2. To challenge the "dirty destroyer" myth: Turtles have a reputation in the hobby as toxic, plant-shredding chaos machines (which for some pond species is true). Most advice says keep them in bare glass boxes. But that just didn’t work for me.

My theory was simple: instead of stripping their environment bare. Lean into the chaos. Engineer proactive filtration, establish biological enrichment, and match the turtle species to the ecosystem. With the right planning, the right turtle doesn't just survive—he thrives as the focal point of a planted display.

The Execution

I’m an electrician by trade, not a biologist or professional aquascaper. I took my research on male Mississippi Map Turtles and tried to anticipate potential points of failure—heavy bio-load, plant damage, territorial aggression—engineering solutions directly into the framework of the tank rather than scrambling later.

After nearly a year of continuous operation, the tank is thriving. Because this is a highly technical setup, I’m dropping the full breakdown (filtration loops, water chemistry, plant care schedules, and full stock list) in the first comment so this main post doesn't turn into a wall of text.

I’d love to hear your thoughts. What else might we be dismissing too quickly?

Meet Greg.

Seeking Suggestions Plants that dangle?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I’m planning to backfill this retaining wall with aquasoil and sand and I’d love for some of my plants to dangle over the wall to help blend it into the rocks in front.

The only thing I’ve seen so far that is even close are crypts but I’m worried they won’t be thick enough.

What should I be looking for?

Question What is this green, stringy growth taking over my tank?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone, this is my first attempt at a planted aquarium.

I have a 60-litre (roughly 16-gallon) tank with lots of stem plants and two or three Anubias. There’s no filter, and the only fish in the tank is a betta.

I recently left for a work assignment and asked a friend to feed the fish. He did a good job, but when I got back, I noticed a strange green growth in the tank. There’s some green hair algae on the driftwood, but this is different: it’s spreading across the glass and growing into the tank, tangling around the plants and other things.

Does anyone know what it might be? Is it some kind of algae or a weed? How can I get rid of it safely?

Please don’t mind the smiskis, gf and I thought they were cute and half assedly thought out putting them in there.
Also don’t mind those ridiculous glitter rocks, had no clue they’d look like that when we ordered them, and have gotten replacements recently

We thoroughly washed everything we put into the tank and baked the wood in the oven for a few hours, used some geodes I had in my room to weigh the plastic wrap to the lid and they fell in once or twice. Maybe that introduced them, maybe also my dirty hands who knows.

Further research days after the start proved I shouldn’t have started with the wood, assumed it would be fine, but here I am now. Literally haven’t seen anyone else have these kinds of shrooms.

When I first noticed white fluffy growth I used a hydrogen peroxide spray, removed the wood sprayed under it, added springtails, and the fungal growth subsided. Payed a closer look today and noticed the abundance of mushrooms.

While getting pictures I noticed those smaller brown mushrooms, honestly I should just get into mycelium culture because this is insane. I feel like such an idiot for not having the proper diligence to catch this stuff sooner. Honestly more worried about the black fuzz growing, never noticed that before now, ts looks like a health hazard at this point.

What should I do? Restart entirely? Try and flood it since the plant roots are all fairly established?

After nearly three months of an empty tank, letting the Lilly’s grow out and root, I finally decided on which fish I plan to keep in this tank. Sparkling Gourami! I got them today. Six of them for a 20 long, low flow tank. Going to keep it species only with these guys. I got them as juveniles so very excited to see their growth process! If any of you have kept them before I would love to see photos. ☺️

Let’s get them acclimated! Will share more once they feel comfortable in the tank.
