Conflicting Feelings at every stage

Let me preface that my situation is that this is coming from someone with a left distal big toe amp with various levels of injuries to the remaining toe stump and 2nd toes. I also understand that in the grand scheme of the posts/stories I see here, my injury/feelings can hit as a bit "basic" but I think you can still understand the dichotomy I feel here.

This was the result from an accident involving a lawnmower where I slipped and my left foot went under. The basic gist is that my stump has very little movement since it was partially torn open but saved, the blade hit right at my MTP joint. My 2nd toe had multiple displaced fractures and both the big stump and 2nd toe had ORIF/K-wires. Had a long wound healing problem that ended up dehisced due to an infection (able to see my big stub bone). Antibiotics and a successful revision surgery happened there after (I love my new foot specialist, please advocate for yourself). I spent about 15w NWB, 2w PWB and 1w now FWB in a surgical boot. Doctor said to switch to a comfortable shoe and start using the thing again.

Today, I went to go buy new shoes. This day has been something I dreamt of for almost 4.5 months now. Found a pair I liked and was stoked to be able to FWB with normal footwear. I walked around the house and yard with my sweet new kicks, but as I was going, my joy quickly switched over to dread (maybe a bit too harsh, melancholy?). It was very much a "big fish-small pond to small fish-big pond" switch in how I felt. I think overall I did "Okay" from a balance/gait/stability standpoint. Pain was very little, just super stiff/awkward, especially after so much time off my feet. However, in the back of my mind, it was a constant "wow we have put in so much effort but still there is so much damn work ahead of us". I was able to ascend the first big peak, but all it revealed were the valleys and other peaks that are in front of me on my journey.

I have felt this sort of ways for "minor wins", getting K-wires out, kicking the infection, ect. But damn did it hit hard since this was such a large milestone I have set for myself. I am aware of that this is how it goes and healing isn't a straight line (physically and mentally) but I can't explain away the way I feel. I guess this is mostly a vent post more than anything. Also to empathize with people who found themselves in similar situations. I am happy I am healing, I know I am going in the right direction, but today really cemented in how long this journey is going to be.

Anyone know where i can just get a long sleeved hospital robe gown for my Quadruped father?

its as it said on the tin; my dads a quadruped amputee he has one regular hospital gown he got from the hospital and just wanted the exact same one but with longer sleeves since the cold season is coming up,

and debatably some pants to fit his new size, but thats understandably hard to figure out

he already has long sleeved shirts and pants its just that those are regular clothes and can be difficult to clean, put on and take off of him, so a nice alternative to those we can use as an option would be handy.

id prefer something thin and of a similar cheapness and thickness like quality to the ones he already has simply because its familar and he overheats easily and as i was looking i found 0 that are actually like that surprisingly. buying regular robes is risky cause in my experience with him 9/10 the thing is too thick to where its too hot for him to where as readily as a regular gown is .

just wanted to see if what im describing is even possible to acquire at a reasonable price

Stump

I’m a right below knee amputee since 2020. I was just wondering why some people get offended at calling what’s left of your limb a stump? Residual limb? I refer to mine as a stump or my favorite is Stumpy! I just feel like you have to find and embrace the humor! I can fully respect another amputee’s choice of words. But when others get butt hurt about it that haven’t experienced life like this it kinda irritates my soul! It’s my life. It’s my Stumpy! I’ll call it what I want and sit back, smiling at shocked faces!

Back pain causes phantom pain?

I have a bout of sciatica again and it's killing me: my back hurts of course, and it's shooting electricity down my buttocks and my legs. But it's waking up my funny bits like never before too, and my GP doesn't believe me! I had to go to the hospital to get someone to take me seriously and prescribe me some Gabapentin - which, unusually for me, actually does cut through the pain this time.

Is that a thing or am I imagining this?

I almost never have phantom pain, but for the past 2 1/2 weeks, I've been able to feel my toes like they never left me - which is kind of surreal really. And they've been on fire non-stop since it began. It's getting seriously tiring.

GUYS I HAVE A QUESTION

i’m making an all-inclusive clothing brand and i’d like to have amputee accommodation as a sizing/ cut option to, if the customer would like, have the remnants of their amputation covered. the only problem is that i don’t want to be disrespectful by calling the bit of skin that‘s left after the amputation a “nub” in the sizing request form, so i guess im asking if any amputees would be offended or if that would be rude to label it as a nub? if it is, please give me alternative things to call it!! i’m so sorry if asking this is out of line, but could you please help me out? 🥹

Is TMR actually worth it?

Post image
7 Upvotes

hello, 22 M new LBKA here! i've done some looking in this subreddit, but haven't found a just asking this question yet, but I apologize if I'm being redundant here.

I recently had a traumatic amputation, and my team was not able to perform TMR due to lack of experience. Now I'm looking for surgeons that do perform TMR and have a few consultations lined up.

Im curious though, what is the community's general opinion on TMR revision surgery;

does it make much of a difference? (nerve pain before vs after tmr)

are my chances ruined by waiting a little over a month before having the procedure done?

Is it really worth it or as good as its made out to be?

im tired of being hooked up to a pca pain pump, being sick and lightheaded, having poor vision and being in pain all the time; if i go back for another surgery i have to know it will be worth the suffering

Dogs galore! 2 are mine and the other 2 are his. I did a mini fashion show when I was there last after I found some old dog outfits I hadn't used in a while.

Slow post day in the sub so I figured I'd fill the void. Anyone else have any cute cat/dog/animal/insect/arachnid pics to share?

Coping with (additional) loss

I’m just over two months out from a table saw accident that led to the immediate amputation of the top third of the middle three fingers of my left hand. The little finger was also injured, but the doc was able to reattach.

I can honestly say that I was doing pretty good with both the physical and psychological aspects of the loss. My right hand is dominant, so the biggest adjustments were healing, pt, and learning to type one-handed.

Then…the reattachment of the pinky didn’t take, and I had to have a revision of that finger, losing the top third of that one as well.

For some reason, the additional loss has been harder than the first. Some of it might have been denial; and some of it might be that my pinky was my security blanket (I may have lost the middle three, but at least I still have my pinky)

Just curious about how others have dealt with setbacks psychologically

Where to go for financial assistance as a poor bka?

My dad was amputated below the knee on his right leg and on the left foot his big and second toe amputated.

My dad is almost 70 he is a veteran and our family is poor. This has already caused problems because his insurance would not accept him into a reputable rehabilitation center now that he is post surgery so he is in a nursing home.

The nursing home is by far the worst of the worst because that’s all his insurance would cover.

I’m afraid he won’t be eligible for a good prosthetic leg because of this. His insurance cant even cover a decent rehabilitation center so I expect the prosthetic leg that is covered won’t be the best for him.

Are there any resources that would pay for a good leg? Any help is appreciated.

Indoor rock climbing shoes

Hi all, just wanted to see if somebody here has some info on this. I recently got into rock climbing. At the moment I am doing just indoors. Anyhow, I am about to buy shoes and was wondering, if anybody had any tips around that. I am BKA and tried a pair today, which seemed to fit, however it was an absolute pain to get it off as the silicone material of the foot and the leather of the shoe just stuck together like glue. On second try, I put a plastic bag over the foot which helped greatly. Now I would like to come up with a more elegant and environmentally friendly solution to this. So yeah, does anybody have any ideas?

Right foot TMA and this sounds dumb that I am so happy about it but I drove today!!

I was afraid I couldn't that my foot wouldn't reach but it did. My husband was like well now you can drive yourself to appointments, I still can't as I still use a rollator to get around and can't get the rollator in and out the car myself and when I go to the hospital where most of my appointments are it is huge and I need the wheelchair.

It might seem small but I am still really excited that I can do it Driving was one of my biggest fears that I wouldn't be able but I can. I won't be trapped in this house forever,

I can't bend my finger even though I can fully bend it with my other hands help it feels like something is blocking it. I just want to know if someone got the similar injury and can share me the process or how it turned out after all healing and rehabilitation.

This is the whole procedure, sorry I can't understand these doctors words: Course of injury / treatment administered:
2026-06-21 The patient underwent surgery under general anesthesia. Procedures performed: osteosynthesis, tendon repair, nerve repair, wound closure, and stump formation. Intraoperative findings: traumatic amputation of the 2nd and 3rd digits of the left hand—amputation of the 2nd digit at the metacarpal level and the 3rd digit at the proximal phalanx level; the 2nd digit remained attached by soft tissues on the radial side, while the 3rd digit exhibited soft tissue avulsion from the bone and remained attached by only a 1 cm skin bridge. Osteosynthesis of the 2nd metacarpal was performed using three Kirschner wires; the extensor tendons and the deep flexor tendon of the 2nd digit were sutured, and both proper digital nerves were repaired. The radial proper digital artery was intact; reconstruction of the ulnar proper digital artery was not possible due to a 1.5 cm arterial defect. Replantation of the 3rd digit was not feasible due to soft tissue avulsion injury; a stump was formed using local tissues at the level of the proximal phalanx. The surgery proceeded without complications.

I just really want to know if it's possible to recover properly and have my finger to bend :,)

Lbka first test socket fitting and hated it NSFW

I have been a LBkA since August of 2025. I have had a lot of healing issues but I finally healed enough to start the process of getting my leg. Well last week I had my first test leg fitting.
I set myself up for complete failure. I thought it was going to be pain free and fit amazing and I’d be taking a few steps. Well I do know I was completely wrong. I know I will have a k3 ankle joint. And a pin lock leg. Other than that it hurt so fucking bad. And it was soooooo heavy. I did get the willow wood classic liner to start wearing and hour a day to get ready for next test fitting.
Are the legs supposed to feel like they weigh a million pounds? Is it supposed to hurt so bad? I thought because they literally scan your leg they’re supposed to fit perfectly. I’m so new to this.
