Hear me out 😶‍🌫️:

Why should we buy our computing hardware from the US, Taiwan, and China, when we could make it ourselves?

Same applies for solar panels and wind turbines.

Training the people and building the infrastructure would take time and resources, but the returns would be worth it.

I feel insufficiently European when my CPU’s silicon is cut in Taiwan, my GPU is american, my PSU is chinese, and my electricity is generated with chinese solar panels.

We must do better, we must institute a new metric: the percentage of objects with the “Made in EU 🇪🇺” flags that a European Citizen owns - with a similar mark applied to tools and services that businesses use.

This way we can incrementally work on increasing the percentage by training people and building infrastructure, with checks and balances to avoid overspending and to increase revenue.

He needs to win the crowd in the US where politics has turned into a pond so shallow you could throw in a pebble and it wouldn't sink.

(Yes, you could argue that these interviews address the entire world and everyone who is willing to listen to them, not just the US)

We know about manipulative narratives and low media literacy, people don't listen but absorb impressions and sentiments, and they don't translate well if what is spoken isn't clear.

Even I don't understand the stuff he says half the time and I try to listen as carefully as possible. I admire the courage of this man, but I think he is doing himself a disservice going to these interviews without a translator. Reading a speech from piece of paper in front of a couple of benevolent EU MPs is a different matter.

Imagine being a US. citizen with an ocean between themselves and the conflict. Of course these interviews do not address voters in the deep south, but who he is trying to reach? The general public? Just my humble opinion.

If politics is (sadly) to a large part about appearance, I'm not sure if these interviews help him.

Retired teacher here, spend most weekends fixing something or other around the house. Got me thinking about tools and why half my workshop is German or Swedish stuff I ordered online. My drill is Bosch, my saw is from some Swedish company I can barely pronounce, and the hand tools are mostly Wera or Wiha. FWIW, I probably could have bought American for the same price but the European stuff just feels like it was designed by people who actually use tools. Better ergonomics, less plastic where it doesn't belong.

My neighbor swears by his DeWalt set and that's fine too, YMMV. Just curious what you all think about European versus American tool brands. Is there a real quality difference or am I just a sucker for clever marketing and satisfying clicky cases? The Wera screwdrivers genuinely feel nicer in hand than anything I grabbed at the local hardware store. That said, finding replacement parts is a nightmare sometimes. Had to wait six weeks for a specific Bosch part last year. Tutoring pays for the hobbies but doesn't cover my patience for shipping delays.

Anyway, wondering if the tool enthusiasts here have thoughts or if I'm overthinking my purchasing habits.
