Seeking Recommendations Romance with strong horror/ghost story/thriller vibes

I'm having trouble finding mor of what i like, which is the FMC and MMC working together to solve/survive a more fast paced plot Halloween ish or horror movie plot - spooky, scary, anxious, but does have a romance HEA, even if its less conventional.

Books I've already read that fit -

House Saphir

Together We Rot

House of Hearts

Girls Who Burn

The Worst is Yet to Come

A Darker Act

Ideally stand alone/finished duology. One thats on my radar is Our Wicked Gifts but its the first of a duology

Adult book recs are fine too, I just dont want dark romance.

Seeking Recommendations Looking for new book

I am stuck I recently finished the truly devious series and the fixer. I am craving more books that feel similar but when I look up recommendations I’ve already read them all. I really liked the inheritance games, little white lies, deadly little scandals, the reappearance of rachel price, the naturals, none shall sleep, embassy row series, the conspiracy of us but I when I read the description for new books I just don’t feel a spark. I’m in a slump and would love recommendations!

Discussion What’s your guilty pleasure for YA works?

Apologies if I am in the wrong subreddit to be discussing such a topic because I have been enjoying Harry Potter as I recently started reading the series for the first time.

I mean, for me personally, I say Harry Potter is a guilty pleasure because of how the series has become controversial due to the creator’s actions she has done in social media as I am well aware of what she has done in the past several years, but I still feel drawn into the lore of the series.

But again I apologize if I am in the wrong place to be discussing a series like Harry Potter because I just had to get that off my chest as lately I was looking for a place online where I can discuss the franchise, so I don’t know of it’s ok to bring it up in here.

Seeking Recommendations Quest/journey tropes fantasy

Hi, im looking for some Y/A or N/A fantasy series that have the quest/journey trope in it. I really miss some of the older tropes that you see in fantasy such as this one. I always liked the idea of a ragtag group having to travel great distances and face various obstacles, learning to trust and support each other.

I will note that while I enjoy romance in my books, I don't like it being the main focus, and I only really like slow burns. When I say slow burns, I don't mean the characters like each other right off the bat but don't get together for 3+ books. I like it where the first book has little to no romance and it slowly builds over the span of 3+ books.

Discussion What makes a “trusted AI” feel threatening in YA sci-fi?

I’ve been writing a YA story set on a generation ship, where the ship’s AI is caring and protective until it isn’t. What are your favorite examples of an AI antagonist in YA, and what made them work for you? I’m especially interested in AIs that seem helpful at first.

Seeking Recommendations Please help!!

Im really picky with contemporary romances but I really want to find more that I love. I find most to be shallow and just so meh.

I want to be utterly OBSESSED and invested. I don't want spice, but I DO want angst, yearning, tension, banter and not boring.

I LOVED:

- Love, Off the Record by Samantha Markum

- Better Than the Movies by Lynn Painter (the literal blueprint)

- The Roommate agreement by Samantha Markum

Discussion I need to talk about Lynn Painter’s last book - Trust Fall

I’m a huge fan of Lynn Painter. I read all of her YA books, and they are the only books that truly makes me feel the same way as watching a good romcom (especially the « All the Boys I’ve loved before » experience as a teenager).
When I saw the upcoming book « Trust Fall » with NY and Fall moods, I was SO EXCITED !

But the reading experience was kind of disappointing, and I don’t see anyone getting the same opinions about it as me. Don’t get me wrong, Lynn knows how to write a good romance, the woman creates green flag men in her sleep. That’s why I was so so so confused by the character of Damion.

Damion already has a huge fandom on booktok and bookstagram, as the best mmc written by Lynn so far, dethroning Wes and Alec (DETHRONING WES SERIOUSLY?). Did we read the same book?
The boy hates an entire family just for the fact that they live in the house he wanted. I mean I get that his uncle’s death must be hard for him, and everyone mourns differently, but there is a difference between mourning and being an absolute ass to a girl and her entire family, LITERAL STRANGERS! It’s so immature to hate on some people you don’t know a single thing about just because he didn’t inherit his uncle house.
Confusion and anger after learning his uncle’s trust? I get it. No problem. But his behavior was simply all about ego, power and control.

And can we talk about the fact that the boy was literally SO MEAN to Julia? I don’t talk about the parts he messed with her just because he found it funny. I won’t say he bullied her exactly, but he witnessed the entire school bullying her and did nothing, and FELT nothing, not an ounce of empathy. And it’s this particular detail that makes me hate this character. Because yeah, by the end of the book he became a decent man, but before falling for Julia he didn’t feel any sympathy towards her, and I don’t see any good person being so neutral witnessing this amount of hate toward a person.

Also Julia is supposed to have trust issues after her relationship with Will and decides to trust the man the minute he gives her a sincere smile instead of a cocky grin even though he spent weeks to be so mean to her.

And why no one talks about Liam, who obviously knows about her twin’s school bullying and does NOTHING? But then at the end, when the truth comes out concerning Damion and his family plan to sue them, he becomes all protective and lesson giver all of a sudden ?

Well that’s it, I hope I’ll find some people who think the same way because I feel kind of alone in front of the Damion’s fan club 😂

Seeking Recommendations Need recommendations

I'm currently running low on books to read and I need some recommendations since I can't find any that interest me.

I'm looking for primarily dystopian action books like Hunger Games, Maze Runner, and Ready Player One (can you tell I'm a newgen) and I'm fine with a bit of fantasy thrown in, but I'm very picky with the fantasy part (I don't like most fantasy, but I have read the Renegades, Prison Healer, and Shadow and Bone trilogies and I really enjoyed them).

Considered Scythe and Red Rising, but have since changed my mind on Red Rising.

Any recommendations help, thanks

General Question/Information Reading Divergent as an adult, thoughts?

I’ve recently rewatched the first two films in the Divergent series but couldn’t bring myself to watch the third, remembering how bad it was.

However, I found the overall story and plot pretty interesting and kind of want to know where it goes but now in my 30s and wonder if this YA series is still a decent read for my age?

I feel like I already know that the romance would probably be quite cringe but I wonder if anyone has read the series as an adult and have you enjoyed it? or if I’ve missed my chance and should’ve read it as a teen.

Thanks :)

General Question/Information Cassandra Clare reading- Where to start

I’ve been working on getting all the books for the Shadow Hunters series and was wondering what book to start with. One site says to read the first three books of The Mortal Instruments and then read the three books in The Infernal Devices, but another site said to start completely with The Infernal Devices and then the Mortal Instruments. Can anyone who has read this series before let me know which book I should actually start with? Thank you!

Discussion Finding an edit of six of crows.

Hey guys I saw a Six of Crows edit on Instagram reels a while back and can't find it anymore💔 what I remember:

Motion/velocity-style edit (smooth zooms, transitions)

had around 150k+ likes

I think the audio was "Headshot" (not 100% sure)

Posted by an edit account that also does other fandoms

Based on the books, not the Netflix show (fan art/illustrations, no show footage)

I've checked my likes and watch history and searched the audio with no luck If anyone knows it or has it saved, please drop the link😞😞😞 Thank you!!

Discussion The side characters of The Way I Used to Be are so unlikeable Spoiler

I’m not saying Eden is an angel or anything, but the way she was treated made her angry.

Mara, Cameron, and Steve are all assholes. They basically pressured her into dating Steve because he was a nice guy even though she clearly wasn’t into him. I honestly don’t get what the big deal was because she’s allowed to not like him whether he’s a nice guy or not. It honestly feels like rape culture to say a girl should have to date a guy just because he’s nice and likes her. And when she lashes out at him (which mind you could have been avoided if they had left her alone) they all call her a slut and a bitch. I mean what? Yes maybe she could have been nicer, but imo she didn’t owe Steve anything just because he’s nice. And he clearly wasn’t that nice if he slut shamed her at the end. I especially don’t like how Mara sided with Steve and Cameron. Like yeah, Eden wasn’t the best but I’d argue Mara was an even worse friend. She sided with two guys over her childhood friend instead of wondering if anything was wrong with her.

And her family sucks too. Her parents are pretty neglectful and never check on what’s going on with her. They clearly favor Caelin. I mean, how does your child sleep on the floor for four years and you don’t even notice? And Caelin sucks too. I understand him being upset with her sleeping with older guys, but he never does anything to help. And all his anger got directed towards her more than the guys who took advantage of her. That scene where he walked in on her pissed me off because she was clearly too drunk to consent and he still blamed her and didn’t even take her home himself. He seemed more concerned about her being a ‘slut’ than if she was okay. And when he finds out Kevin was accused of rape by his gf, he immediately assumes she’s lying, and not only accuses her of being a slut, but insinuates that Eden is a slut. I’m glad he believed her in the end but it was too little too late.

I haven’t read the next book so idk if any of these characters get better. But I’m just frustrated with how everyone slut shamed her and called her a bitch because of her behaviour instead of showing concern about her or actually trying to have a real conversation with her. But unfortunately that’s what happens a lot irl.

Review Was I the only one who enjoyed caraval?😭

There are mixed opinions on this book but personally I liked the caraval series. I was actually shocked to see people hate Tella because she was reckless and chaotic, mind you she was a teenager. Overall I'd say it was a pretty decent book if you like adventure+fantasy go for it. And i think it was Stephanie garber's debut novel. And if you are thinking of reading ouabh I'd suggest reading this series first and then ouabh since ouabh is the spin off series of the 1st book.
