This is the Republican candidate for Senator in Iowa.

How can MAGA even believe that gender changing school crap? It's a school, not a hospital, and the schools can barely take care of a kid's nosebleed because they are so underfunded.
881
u/BitterFuture 8h ago
That's the thing: none of them believe it. They just say it.
If they cared about honesty, they couldn't be conservatives.

"Never believe that
anti-Semitesthe Republican Party members are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. Theanti-Semitesthe Republican Party members have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past."- Jean-Paul Sartre
I originally found this quote incredibly poignant during covid, where the approach to covid was starkly along political lines. Especially regarding the responsibility of words, we would end up with Tucker Carlson saying things like "vaccinated people still get covid, these dont work!" while any responsible medical professional would have never indicated such a thing. And obviously in the late stage of truth being "subjective", watching Fox Entertainment for five minutes give you a crash course in the responsibility of words and lack thereof.

u/jyc23 7h ago
This is my first time reading this quote and I thank you for posting it. I’m actually crazily not very familiar with Sartre. Is the rest of his stuff as good as this? I’m ashamed to admit the most I know about Sartre comes from the 90s hip hop group Digable Planets.

It's the "Somalians are eating the dogs and cats in Springfield!" all over again.
The candidates saying it didn't believe it, but their voter base did, and so many bomb threats were called into various schools in Springfield that they had students taking classes from home via Zoom for a bit.
55
u/Notasmartwoman 8h ago edited 1h ago
Excuse you, they were racistly lying about Haitians with the pet-eating thing! Their racist lies about Somalians are basically “the great replacement theory, and no we’re not even bothering to paint it with a thin veneer of originality, it’s literally just the great replacement theory.”
Yeah I hate it here too 🤦🏻♀️
Edit *Somalis My bad
18
u/Competitive-Bee-3250 8h ago
I distinctly recall the motte and bailey they played with it too. From haitians are eating cats and dogs, to maybe its not too much of a stretch that one or two cats could have been killed by a single unhinged person from haiti because their religion is fearful of cats, and since that was never completely disproven they acted like they won on it. Then as soon as it stopped being useful they abandoned the narrative entirely.
8
u/Icy_Fish_2154 3h ago
The Somalians was the daycares, which the fraud was all conservative white people serving the immigrant community, because they are less likely to report crimes like the frauds.
By the time Republicans cared, the ringleaders were in prisons.

There’s a huge effort to deliberately confuse social transition (things like names, pronouns, clothing) with medical transition (which would be things like hormones or puberty blockers at that age and not surgical regardless, and obviously a school nurse isn’t perscribing anything to anyone). But it’s easy to point at a policy saying kids can request to use a (gasp) nickname at school and say they’re letting kids swap genders. It’s hard to push back on that in a soundbite.
Though a lot of it is also just outright lying of course.
22
u/mellophone11 7h ago
A few years ago the Iowa legislature passed a law banning schools from using names or pronouns that differed from what a kid had originally registered with, unless parental permission is given, or something along those lines. The intent was to crack down on kids expressing their identity, but what actually happened was teachers were no longer allowed to use a kid's nickname unless they had express permission from a parent. I'm not actually sure they ever repealed that? I think schools just stopped following it, because it's extremely stupid.
18
u/GroundedSatellite 6h ago
It's a slippery slope. When I started high school I asked people to call me by a shortened version of my given name, then 20 years later I transitioned. If only it had been illegal to shorten my name, I wouldn't have found happiness in adulthood.

Talking to conservative parents sucks. They really do believe that it’s the schools that turn people gay or trans and they’re terrified of it happening to their kids. It just gives the vibe that their love for their kids is very conditional, which is sad
33
u/smarmiebastard 7h ago
My sister homeschooled all three of her kids, and two of them are trans. lol

They refuse to believe the evidence that points to gender identity/sexuality almost certainly being genetic and immutable or at least not easily influenced. They still choose to believe it must be a choice or changeable somehow because to accept otherwise could require questioning many other parts of their worldview.
13
u/Ajibooks 6h ago
Accepting yourself actually is a choice. They don't want kids to know that option is available.

If you accept non-heterosexual and non-cis people as natural, that means they were made that way by God®.
And that means the freaks are made in His image, too.
Of course, that also means the bigotry in the Bible is heretical despite it's origins.
20
u/wittiestphrase 7h ago
It’s not a vibe. Their love for their kids is VERY conditional. Think what we tell you to think. Do what we tell you to do. Like what we tell you to like. Most importantly, hate who we tell you to hate. Fail any of those and you’re a disappointment.
14
u/jyc23 7h ago
But on the flip side, they expect to be loved unconditionally. They’ve got the whole thing reversed.
6
u/wittiestphrase 6h ago
Oh absolutely. The only principle these people have is that they absolutely, under no circumstances can admit fault. That informs everything else they do and say.

I would bet money its not the schools "turning" their kids but the teachers being empathetic and accepting of the students. Something they don't get at home
27
u/Vyzantinist 7h ago
Because they want to believe such things. Conservatives think in reverse to normal people; they form the conclusion first - based on feelings - and then walk back from that, looking for evidence to support that conclusion and denying or dismissing anything that challenges it. They believe transgender people are tricksy and evil, and the Democrats control everything and want to transition everyone; dumb shit like this is crack for them because it validates their emotional conclusion. It lights up the tiny part in their brains that says I'm right!

u/WitchyWarriorWoman 7h ago
You'd be surprised what people will come to believe. I moved from Chicago to Florida, and everyone here is convinced that Chicago is a war zone. Someone asked my high schooler how he survived school from all the shootings. We lived in the suburbs and I worked downtown: it's one of the most beautiful cities in the world and has amazing schools and programs.
I'm actually more paranoid here than I was in Chicago.

12
u/Mihailis27 7h ago
The actual "half-truth" behind that particular talking point is even worse. The cat litter thing simply was floated as an idea for what to do if small kids had to use the bathroom (because, you know, scared shitless) during an active shooter lockdown.

Like anything it started with them saying that public schools turn kids gay/trans because of their exposure to the ideas (which obviously is bs), and then it turned into schools were literally performing surgery to turn them trans and there are legitimately people who believe this. I haven't talked to anyone specifically who believe this, but I have experience with a friend's mom who was dead certain without a doubt that Obama personally attended abortions so he could watch the fetus writhe around on a cold metal table before dying. If she could believe that, I can believe that there are people who literally think they have operating rooms at elementary schools.

It’s also mind numbing how the disconnect presents itself when they don’t want any support or funding to help education. They don’t care about what goes on in the classroom (unless it’s prayer and pledge of allegiance) but definitely care about what goes on in the bathroom of these schools.

It's depressing because of who will buy the farm. It won't be some family that wants to make a living the good Ole fashioned way. Just more land and farm equipment to whoever the biggest dog in their town happens to be. It'll be run into the ground and sold multiple times as tax write offs and whatever other bad shit you can imagine while the "family " walks away with enough money to keep getting by. I don't know shit about farming, but i can guarantee once they sell the farm, they'll be better set than most people. Or else they wouldn't sell. I don't know. I can't feel bad for any of them.

I work in ag finance. With the decline in industry stability over the last 10 years, it never ceases to amaze me how many farmers struggle to net 40/50/60k per year and still fly Trump or MAGA flags on their property. There’s also been a noticeable shift in loud/proud farming families with long histories that suddenly became cool with the prospect of selling their land to conglomerates and/or developers.

They are also obsessed with kids' bodies, so these two obsessions have a multiplying effect in their minds.

They may be dumb but most of them aren’t dumb enough to truly believe the trans “issue” actually outweighs the nationwide skyrocketing cost of living. I’m honestly kinda shocked we haven’t heard anything about the immigrant caravan that is approaching our border every two years but somehow never reaches it.
They know they have nothing so they are trying to turn a complete nothing burger that will never have any impact on 99.9% of people’s lives into a big button issue. They are completely full of shit.

"Sex change in schools, it's so cheap, everyone is a secret transsexual and it happens in a single afternoon, your kid Timmy goes to school and come back Tina. Schools are simultaneously out of budget but have the budget to do sex change reassignment surgery that takes years in the matter of minutes. And its all performed by the school nurse.
True story."
You'd have to be an idiot to believe the bleating.

For those wondering, the Trump method for debating isn’t a real method.

I mean... I'll disagree because that dumb shit sure does work on dumb people. The dude was elected twice ffs.

u/ridicalis 8h ago
It's not that it works, it's that the contest was decided in advance.
And, for too much of MAGAverse, it doesn't matter what either candidate says or does at this point, as the decision's already made. My only hope is that the people who foolishly sat the last election out decide to exercise some democracy.

The thing is this isn't enough for them to lose and recent history shows that.
We've seen extensively that all the right wing has to do is make up totally bogus claims and it gets them wins.

They always have to go with their pedophile in chief's narrative on trans.

These Republican losers have literally zero successes to run on. All they can do is demonize brown people and trans folks.

Trans issues must be polling very well amongst the Republican faithful.

Nothing is won or lost until the election is over. Don't get complacent! Vote people! Get everyone you know to vote! Vote, vote, vote.

Did she actually lose the race, though? MAGA is notorious for voting against their own interests.

Nothing is lost till the votes are counted. Go vote and make sure she loses!

I would hope this loses her the race but my confidence in this country to boot people like her is sitting at the bottom of the Mariana trench.

It’s wild that republicans feel so comfortable going from lying about kids using the bathroom in kitty litter boxes at school to saying schools are preforming sex changes. It’s so fucking mind blowing they just say this shit

This explains the school sign people were confused about. The one where it said something like, "MAGA if you dropped of a son and took home a daughter, you have the wrong kid. Come back and get you son."

You'd like to think that spouting lies and nonsense would cost you support, but it seems to have worked pretty well for the GOP of late.

Republicans are so unbelievably full of shit all the time. It would be funny if it wasn't pathetically stupid

And this is why Trump is doing everything he can to stop the election: steal ballots, cancel voter rolls, get rid of voting machines, declare Martial law, etc. His crew know they have complete fools running the MAGA ticket in red states. Zero charisma, intelligence, relatability. They know they're screwed so the best answer is to cheat.

Fake meat is not a bad thing. Moving away from slaughtering animals for meat should be something we strive for. It is technology we will likely desperately need as our climate gets more inhospitable
But to the overall point. Republicans have stopped even pretending to make an effort. They know if you’re voting republican you’re a piece of shit and an idiot. Or the small number of ultra wealthy that actually benefits from Trump

Good ol whataboutism. She thinks it makes her look slick when in reality it makes her look like even more of an idiot.

u/LoudMusic 4h ago
The people voting for her don't care what is said in debates. Hell, they're probably not even aware debates are happening. They vote party lines and go to bed mad at minorities.

don't let this work. a dodge like this should cause everyone, her opponent and the moderator, to just tell her to answer and then wait.
