Now we know that as soon as we let off just a little pressure, corporations will immediately fail to self regulate placing our lives in jeopardy.

Gosh who woulda thunk

871

u/Nekowulf Aug 28 '26

The same people demanding you respect your elders and apply the wisdom of the past throw a fit if you respect the elders who implemented these laws in the first place and apply the wisdom of the past concerning safety failures.

159

u/Arlitto Aug 28 '26

Incredibly accurate

58

u/--slurpy-- Aug 29 '26

Always ask yourself why a fence was put up before you take it down.

57

u/CallMeSisyphus Aug 29 '26

Yeah, I'm old, and I say fuuuuuuck that. I don't deserve respect because I'm old; I deserve respect because I'm kind and respectful. IRL, that is - not always on reddit. ;-)

25

u/Mandlebrotha Aug 29 '26

Was talking with a friend of mine about this. She said "I feel like we have a lot of old people and not a lot of elders," and that really hit me.

I think we got a lot of people who grew up with a pretty solidly ensconced 'F you I got mine' mentality, and it's showing it's ugliest dividends.

We didn’t even need to test for that theory! We’ve already tested it multiple times and corporations fail it every. fucking. time.

Regulations are always written in blood. Conservatives are the only group of people that think regulations were merely written to make it harder for them to make money, no other possible reason.

134

u/fuzzhead12 Aug 28 '26

Oh no, conservatives are well aware of the real reasons regulations exist. They just don’t care about the people who may be harmed by ignoring said regulations. They worship Supply-Side Jesus and the Almighty Dollar.

Always remember when people say that the market will dictate things: without government intervention we had slavery, child labor, and no minimum Wage or workers' protections. Governmental oversight can absolutely be a problem (due to politics and in general incompetence) but without it we would have a lot more problems.

This one's even worse than failing to self-regulate. The packaged foods were shipped with fake inspection markings.

It's ironic that al-qaeda wanted to cripple America by destroying the World Trade Centers, but all they had to do was buy corrupt politicians as aipac does.
It's also sort of funny, morbidly, that both the taliban and republicans have so much in common including hating women and vaccines. Memes like this never get old...

We need to know what's going on. By law, these products have to be inspected at points of entry into the US. The Argentinian beef in FL/TX, for example, somehow bypassed inspection? By law, they must be inspected for safety. How are these products bypassing inspection?

I don't understand how on earth that segment made it on air. No one stopped to suggest that "life isn't expensive, you're just expecting too much food" wasn't cartoonishly ghoulish?

Just like when McDonald's broke down how a minimum-wage job was perfectly doable assuming you never paid for heat and that rent was $600.

I’m on a tofu and beans diet.

34

u/purple_plasmid Aug 28 '26

I actually started to learn how to cook a lot of Japanese dishes, and I think it’s been keeping me safe, lots of tofu

21

u/timesfive Aug 28 '26

Heck yeah! I love tofu. I do a lot of Asian dishes, but more recently I’ve been making sauces with tofu for pasta dishes. I’ve also experimented with making it into typical meat based dishes - like spicy chicken sandwiches and homemade crunchwraps. I started incorporating tofu into my diet about five years ago, and appreciate the cost and versatility.

8

u/holysmokrs Aug 28 '26

Maybe I'm getting the wrong tofu, but I always buy extra firm. I still can't grt over that the inside has a consistency of custard. I can get the outside firm and crispy, but the inside is still not appealing to me.

7

u/timesfive Aug 28 '26

Totally. The consistency isn’t for everyone. Something I would suggest trying is freezing the tofu first. I’d try it at least once to see if you like it! I actually prefer this method if I’m using it as a “meat dish dupe”.

It’s easy-peasy. Extra firm tofu, toss the package in the freezer, thaw when ready to use, squeeze water out, pat dry, then fry.

Libertarians insisted that food standards were so high in the US and that if we got rid of government oversight, then standards would go even higher.

2.3k

u/Senior-Albatross Aug 28 '26

Libertarians are not serious people. They're just entitled assholes flailing around for pseudointellectual reasons why they should be constantly catered to.

846

u/ShroomBear Aug 28 '26

Always be reminded that in the US, Libertarians were given state taxpayer funds in NH to start up a town to prove their ideals work. The town failed because they couldn't address that the town immediately turned into a landfill with everybody throwing their garbage everywhere and the most docile bear population in the world started mauling the residents. Libertarians are pretty much the most incompetent ideological group in any context

313

88

u/CariniFluff Aug 28 '26 edited Aug 28 '26

Overall project - The Free State Project

The actual implementation - Grafton, NH Free Town Project

This is what happens when the stupidest (or most gullible) people in the room band together and think that they've come up with some brand new idea when in reality this idea has been around forever and has been rejected as completely unworkable by anyone with an ounce of intelligence.

Libertarianism was also a big thing before weed was legalized in states with common sense. One of the core tenets was getting rid of prohibition, which is still a good idea, but it resulted in a bunch of college students glombing onto the political leanings of Libertarianism without really thinking things through. I remember in the early 2000s there were a ton of people at my college that were totally behind libertarianism. Of course they had never lived in a society without a functioning water and sewer system, fire department, hospitals, schools, etc.

52

u/BaconGristle Aug 28 '26

Creating a libertarian utopia is basically just deleting your society's save game and restarting on sandbox mode. Eventually, you'll just end up rebuilding government to keep society functional.

34

u/ShroomBear Aug 28 '26

When your ideology is completely rooted in individualism and individual rights and freedoms, it stands to reason a libertarian utopia can only support an individual and hold a population of yourself.

u/HolyRamenEmperor Aug 28 '26

To be fair, "state taxpayer funds" initially paid no part in the failed Grafton, NH, experiment.

But yes, in 2004 a bunch of libertarians basically took over a town, slashed public funding—including waste services, road maintenance, law enforcement, first responders, and other infrastructure—and collapsed a few years later under the weight of municipal dysfunction & infighting. And bear attacks (which is when the state got involved).

13

u/GreatTragedy Aug 28 '26

My husband is a libertarian. And yes, he’s a republican who doesn’t want to admit he’s a republican.

30

u/Senior-Albatross Aug 28 '26

I'm going to guess his self awareness is dog shit. And because of this he takes anyone pointing that out even gently very poorly. Thinks everyone else is always the problem, especially if he is ever told he can't do something he wants to do.

41

u/BeaglishJane Aug 28 '26

Which is why we’re nearing the end of our marriage, and he feels like the couple’s therapist is “targeting him” while “over-validating” my own feelings about the horrible shit he’s done. It’s a theme.

19

u/Senior-Albatross Aug 28 '26

Your relationship is between yourself, your close friends, and your therapist.

...but that is pretty well in alignment with what I would predict. I'm sorry. They can have a superficial charisma in their self obsession in the short term. Do take care of yourself.

11

u/BeaglishJane Aug 28 '26

Tbh he doesn’t even have the charisma. I was just a very traumatized person accepting the love I was used to. However, through years of therapy and leaning on friends and my family, I’m healing. The juxtaposition of that is it’s exposing the wound in my marriage, and I don’t believe it’s able to be salvaged.

I hate to say this, but they're really not. They're not serious people. There's soooooo much fluff there--I've really tried to see the core of the philosophy, but as a worldview, it's just magical thinking. I always wondered if I just didn't get it, or I'm just on Reddit too much, but it's just a silly worldview.

43

u/Drakesyn Aug 28 '26

the entire ideology makes way more sense when you realize the people who believe in it, think they are the sort of person who would survive as a warband leader in an apocalypse. You know the type. Those people so confident in their own abilities, despite having never even tested them. The sort who conflate accidents of birth and strings of lucky circumstance, and never having to face the consequences of failure in any way.

Of course those sorts of people want unfettered capitalistic freedom. The only rules that even affect them are the ones written to keep other people safe from their hubris and ignorance.

I've known some who were capable of critical thought, but they still make the incorrect assumption that people will default to being caring and selfless (even though they know that they wont be, themself).

A majority of the libertarians I've met have been selfish economics/business majors with associates or bachelor degrees from schools that didnt require them to really take many classes outside of their discipline.

Almost every Libertarian I met was an upper-middle-class white man who has never experienced true hardship trying to socially encourage a sort of "dont see dont tell" mentality with socioeconomic problems. People who have never needed serious help and so have a warped perception of how welfare works.

People who want to be allowed and encouraged to be selfish and ignore their neighbors drowning.

78

u/Deraj2004 Aug 28 '26

Culture wars being pushed did the U.S. in, make people care about what another group of people are doing instead of paying attention to what businesses and the super rich are doing.

58

u/NW7l2335 Aug 28 '26

Systemic underfunding of the education system did America in; the issue is the vast majority of people lack basic critical thinking skills and as such believe the culture war framing narrative instead of focusing on working class solidarity against the ruling elite (epstein class).

I don’t know where you are, but just about everywhere on the planet has a similar problem with anti-intellectual populist tough guys either in power or trying to take it. We’re leading the fall, but we’re not the totality of it. Our electoral system is just well suited to small groups seizing power.

37

u/Carbonatite Aug 28 '26

I'm convinced that if humanity hadn't been so fucking dismally bigoted for so many centuries - gatekeeping women and minorities from higher education and other opportunities - we'd have commercial space travel today.

We've been operating at a fraction of our collective intellectual capacity for millenia. It's infuriating and tragic how many brilliant womens' minds were squandered because they were shackled to the kitchen and nursery. The amount of geniuses who could have changed the world who died in the middle passage or slaving away on a plantation. The amount of people in colonial territories who could have rivaled Einstein if they hadn't been brutally worked or starved to death by greedy occupiers.

America had economic and scientific hegemony for decades and if we just told the bigots to shut the fuck up and stopped trying to keep women, minorities, LGBTQ people in inferior positions we could have tapped into literally millions of brilliant peoples' talents and given them world class research facilities and funding to work their genius and improve things for everyone.

But American conservatives would reject a literal utopia if a black woman was the one responsible for its existence.

15

u/PopeGuss Aug 28 '26

Kamala Harris could've given everyone universal healthcare, basic income and a 4 day work week and the racists would've had her impeached and convicted for daring to prove that a woman could get it done.

Eh, that's not a US only thing. Racism and bigotry is everywhere, one of the biggest differences is that the US talks about it and other countries often sweep it under the rug.

u/wink047 Aug 28 '26

Well maybe guys should stop growing boobs because it makes my private area all confused and we can’t be having that!!!! /s

u/llandar Aug 28 '26

I think about this a lot. Just a dash of “for the greater good” mentality in with the “rugged individualism” main character syndrome would be so great.

Somehow I think it might be a shorter list.

139

u/BlobbyChong Aug 28 '26

No argument that Trump ans his ilk are responsible for dismantling the agencies that police this shit, but why are we letting these companies continue to produce policies that allow this shit in the first place?

171

u/GeneralZex Aug 28 '26

You answered your question in the first sentence. Companies will never police themselves. There needs to be a regulatory or legal body that will demand and enforce compliance on them, day in and day out.

Almost every food, health, safety, workplace, and environmental regulation that has ever come to be has been paid for in blood.

73

u/Carbonatite Aug 28 '26

As an environmental professional, I like to say that trusting corporations to be good stewards of the environment is like trusting a hungry coyote to be a good guardian of a litter of baby rabbits.

but why are we letting these companies continue to produce policies that allow this shit in the first place?

You know why. They lobbied for it. They bought out our politicians so that they don't have as much oversight, and now they're taking advantage of that. At the expense of the public.

This is what happens when you have capitalism without guardrails, it becomes exploitative.

18

u/ThrowawayAdvice1800 Aug 28 '26

It's really telling that the INSTANT the government stopped looming over their shoulders and watching them like a hawk they started selling toxic contaminated garbage.

It reminds me of the way Christians tell on themselves when they ask atheists "well if there's no God then what stops you from raping and murdering people" and being incapable of fathoming that we just don't want to do those things and don't need a magical threat to stop us. Here we have capitalism demonstrating the same mindset they do: "well if nobody is looking then what's to stop us from selling people rotted and dangerous food" and the answer is apparently nothing, because they have no morals.

It probably needs to be said that recalls are a healthy part of our food safety system, and we are actually seeing slightly less than past years…but that’s a bad thing because we are seeing less recalls alongside significantly more illness, slower source identification of outbreaks, and since this is our 9th recall for lack of inspections specifically with the record high of 10 lack of inspection recalls per year (2025, 2017…both with you know who in charge) I think it’s safe to say we will beat that record by years end…DOGE did us dirty without even saving 1/100th of their financial goal. Elections have consequences.

You don't need to regulate what businesses produce because the market will weed out the bad businesses!

The courts will provide relief to those hurt by bad businesses!

The courts need to stop providing such excessive awards to people harmed by businesses! We need tort reform to stop people from getting compensation when businesses kill, injure, and cheat their customers [edit: and employees]!
