Massive forest and peatland wildfires are causing apocalyptic red and orange skies across Sumatra and Kalimantan in Indonesia
The fires are tied to intentional land-clearing (forest and peat land) for Palm oil plantations.
Skies have turned bright orange and deep red, with thick, toxic smoke swallowing towns, reducing visibility, and causing a spike in respiratory illnesses.
In Central Kalimantan, air quality has hit "dangerous" levels (with PM2.5 readings soaring past 3,300 in Palangkaraya). Schools in areas like Palangkaraya and Sampit have closed, and residents are urged to stay indoors.
The hazardous haze has drifted into neighboring Malaysia and Singapore, raising broader Southeast Asian environmental and health concerns.

the worst part is that this isnt an accidental natural disaster. it is man--made destruction that happens year after year, and the local communities are the ones paying the price with their health.

Yeah, I hate how all the headlines just say “Forest fire” and “Wildfire” which makes it sound like it happened naturally

Not only the local communities, but also Singapore and Malaysia. Fuck Indonesia🤢

For anyone who doesn't know, peat bogs are massive filters of CO2 and filter more per acre than forests. Destroying peatlands will exponentially make climate change worse.

Do you not know what exponentially means?

Never use a long word where a short one will do.

When the short word doesnt emphasize the magnitude of the impact, i will always go for the correct word.

As a non native English speaker, is exponentially here used as an adverb, and would it then be better placed as the second to last word in the sentence for ultimate power?

Placing it before the last word sounds a little more natural to my ears, but both work fine and mean the same thing in this context.

So dunno if they know this, but peat bogs do a lot of CO2 capture. They store more than double the carbon of all the world's forests combined, even though they cover 3% of the planet's land surface.
So this is gonna cause a bit of a stir to the climate, no doubt.

Hey, can we do a reset? I fucking hate this timeline. Why do I keep seeing the most depressing shit happening? Its like humanity is trying to speedrun its extinction

To add to it, the governor of East Kalimantan, where much of the burning is happening, is in Singapore with his family on holiday. Meanwhile, Indonesian firefighters are desperately trying to keep the situation under control and citizens are unable to work their fields or send their children to school.

The fucked up thing is that all these fires are for data centers. So when the surrounding countries tried to offer fire fighting help, the minister scoffed and rejected, saying they got it under control.
***********************************************************************************************************
"Environment Minister Jumhur Hidayat said on Wednesday (Oct 13), as the government weighs offers of firefighting help from neighbouring countries before deciding whether to accept them." Indonesia-rejects-disaster-status
"Indonesia has yet to respond to the offer. (as of 10 Oct)" - waiting-indonesias-response-firefighting-aid-offer
***********************************************************************************************************
Read as: the fires hasn't burned down enough space (including ancient forest, jungles, endangered species, or even villages - these are worth nothing) for the data centers (who are paying billions).
Once we got the minimum area needed, then we can have the surrounding countries to put out the fires for us.
***********************************************************************************************************
The powers that be don't care about their own people nor their neighbors nor the world or future as they will be paid billions by data centers.
These includes: Microsoft, CoreWeave, BDx Data Centers, Princeton Digital Group (PDG), Digital Edge
