Mod Announcement Mod announcement: new rule that use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared or disclosed
A new rule has been added to r/waterloo in regards to A.I.
Use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared, either in title, or the first line of text in original post
Moderators may and will take action in good faith regardless of compliance with this new rule.
The reason we're doing this is to try not to be too far behind in response to the use of this technology, and encourage genuine engagement within our community.
Recently mods have been removing posts of various low-quality effort such as A.I. images, and publications purporting to be news or 'news style' articles that are suspected to be A.I. - but also fail to provide the identity of any legitimate living creator/author within the Region of Waterloo or otherwise.
This is an effort to remove or reduce poor quality, deceptive, disinformation, and various other posts made in bad faith.
Please direct concerns or comments to mod mail.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Mod Announcement Changes to Flair in r/Waterloo
It was recently pointed out that the flairs referencing the 2025 election are maybe a teeny bit outdated.
After discussion among the moderator team, it was determined that while the language was outdated, the flairs still were useful in identifying sudden influxes of new accounts to certain threads. The flair language has therefore been updated and will be applied as users post or comment. The flairs refer to the approximate period when a user became somewhat active in r/Waterloo. This is not the same as the date account was created (which you can see on each user's page) and not when the very first post was made in this subreddit.
As explained by the previous flair announcement:
The intent of this flair is not to target newbies, nor to say that we don't want people to join the subreddit. All are welcome in the subreddit. The intent is to make it clear to readers when there is an influx of unknown accounts which push certain narratives in the comments. This does happen, especially on posts about certain controversial subjects. People should know when these they are new accounts and not established community members.
While everybody should be aware if there is an obvious astroturfing campaign, all users remain responsible for using their best judgement when determining credibility of submissions and comments. Please consider the merit of ideas rather than the reputation of a commenter.
Feel free to submit any comments or constructive feedback below, or to comment and receive your new flair. There may be further tweaks to come and this flair system could be discontinued at any time.
Thank you for reading, and stay safe out there in all this snow.
Update 2026-01-23: New flair is out again, 2025 users should now have "Regular" status, and users new since 2026 will be noted.

Is it me or butter is expensive?
Holy God I went out grocery shopping after about 9 months and holy shit these prices are absolutely nuts. A stick of butter is 8 dollars. 8 freaking dollars. Bananas are like 3 dollars a dozen, God lord.
I'm not sure how families with children are serving if they aren't making over 120k/year. My god this is Robbery in daylight.
Sorry for the rant but just had to get it out. And any tips for buying cheaper groceries are welcomed.

The intersection at Caroline and Father David Bauher kind of drives me crazy
There's like 4 types of traffic all going through the intersection (walking, bikes / ebikes, cars and ION) across a tiny intersection with just 1 stop sign (not a 4 way stop) to manage the traffic.
The area is super busy, so many accidents almost happen here just due to all the different speeds of traffic trying to go through this small area.
Stresses me out as both a driver and pedestrian.

Shannon Weber texting citizens in Waterloo without consent
I've not signed up for anything that should warrant this, not sure if my number was obtained through a leaked database or some other means but I find this very unbecoming of someone seeking mayorship in Waterloo. The only other instance of non-consenting texting I've received is from Doug Ford so it seems great company for her to be a part of /s

How hard is it really to find full-time childcare after mat leave in KW?
I feel like I constantly see horror stories on here about being on the One List for years, not finding the subsidized price care, etc. Does anyone have recent insight into finding childcare, where they were open to private home daycare and not necessarily looking for subsidized pricing? I'm trying to gauge if childcare is a total crapshoot we shouldn't plan on finding at all around KW, or if we will be okay if we budget for higher prices and delay going back to work until 18 months.

Anyone here from Montreal?
I was born and raised in Montreal, and I’m thinking about moving to Waterloo to look for a job in tech (network/systems administration), since finding those in MTL has become dire, even if you can speak both French and English at a native level.
Obviously I don’t wanna be one of those people that gentrifies the hell out of a nice place, I couldn’t afford it even if I wanted to lol, but there’s more to life than just work and tbh, Montreal spoils its inhabitants with so much cultural offerings everywhere you look.
So, if you come from Montreal, or even if you were born in Waterloo, what do you think about your city? Do you think it’s affordable for your situation? What about the job market? Not only in tech but in general, and also, is Waterloo a fun place to be? Are the people nice? Is it easy to make friends?
And how car-centric are you guys? Can I survive on a bike and public transit, I know how to drive but I hate the idea of owning a car.
If I’m gonna move out of my hometown, I’ll do my absolute best to integrate and be a nice, chill person to hang out with, who pays his taxes diligently and contributes to society. But it’s because of that reason that I wanna make sure wherever I move to is worth the effort.

Waterloo Ward 5 All-Candidates Meeting: Wed, Oct 21
At the very last minute, the Lincoln Heights Neighbourhood Group, VisionWR and waterlooregionvotes.org is organizing an all-candidates meeting for next week: Wednesday, October 21 at the Lincoln Road Chapel, 145 Lincoln Road, Waterloo.
Four of the five candidates have confirmed their attendance, and the fifth will be unable to attend.
Doors open at 6pm. The event starts at 6:30pm. After the formal questions there will be a meet-and-greet from 8:30pm-9:00pm.
All questions for the candidates will come from the audience.
All residents in Waterloo Ward 5 are welcome, and we mean that. We especially would like to get the word out to renters, students in the ward, New Canadians, and members of other groups who are vastly underrepresented in municipal politics.
There will be no livestream (sorry) but we will be recording the meeting and posting it online afterwards.
(Apologies for the multiple reposts and deletes. The last poster contained significant errors -- we misspelled a candidate's name, and got the ending time of the event wrong.)

Anybody know any places to play pickup soccer near Laurier Uni?
I'm a new student at Laurier university and I'm looking to get some touches in consistently in order to train for the team next year, but I didn't do intramurals and so now I'm looking for a place where I can play, I know there are some apps people use, so if anybody has any information on that aswell that would be great!
Thank you

Wait times
Anyone who was on the special priority list for a 1 bedroom apartment last year know what the estimated wait time is like. I picked 15 buildings but 100 units in total is that enough for a shorter wait time, I wish I could add more but those are the only place I feel will be safer for me and my situation. Thank you for any insight.

Harry Potter related gift shop
Hello,
I was wondering where I can find something Harry Potter related to gift someone (mugs, wallets, small bag, accessories). The recipient of said gift is someone in her late 20s.
Some alternative gift ideas, if you know if any local shops please let me know!
- embroidery tools (she has a kit but what else might she be interested in? Some unique looking scissors maybe?)
- she's into reading so maybe some custom reading accessories (bookmarks, cute reading light)
Thanks!

Recommendations for Car Parts?
Hello! I need to buy some spare parts for my Honda Civic, including bodywork and bumper covers, and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as to where I should purchase these? Doesn’t have to be local and can be ordered in (it’s not an old car), I just don’t know what stores folks would typically order these larger items from. For you folks that have replaced bodywork, where do you recommend? Thanks!

Elderly Injury at Waterloo Town Square South Parking Lot
I realized that I have dash cam footage of an elderly person tripping, falling, and subsequently injuring themselves in the parking lot this afternoon. If any family member needs the footage, please reach out and I can submit (confirming some details).
Amazing people rushed to help before I even got a parking spot and had the ambulance there quickly.

Communauto, any thoughts?
I live and study in Waterloo and take transit for all of my medium and long distance trips. I use the Transit app and it shows Communauto cars on the map and it piqued my interest. Car share would be very useful for if I need to buy something from IKEA for example, so I’m wondering if anyone else uses this service.
If you use this service, what are your recommendations, tips and tricks, warnings, or other info about it?

The judge people quote against Piatkowski just had a botched encampment ruling overturned for relying on stereotypes
(Sorry, no tl;dr. Boiling court rulings down to one-liners is how we got here.)
On Friday, the Court of Appeal overturned a ruling by Superior Court Justice James Ramsay in Hamilton's encampment case. The Spectator reported that the case now needs a fresh hearing because of Ramsay's errors, including his "sweeping takes on mental illness and addiction."
Ramsay also ruled in 2023 on a motion in the defamation lawsuit Carolyn Burjoski brought against the WRDSB and its then-chair, Scott Piatkowski. With Piatkowski running for Waterloo city council, I've seen people quote Ramsay's line that stopping her presentation was "embarrassingly erroneous and arbitrary," even though the Court of Appeal rejected it in 2024.
This post isn't an attempt to vindicate Piatkowski, because the Court of Appeal did not fully vindicate him. The courts agreed with him on important points, but criticized the accuracy of his media comments about what Burjoski said. But quoting a judge's statement as if it settled anything, when the Court of Appeal later found he got the law wrong, isn't reasonable.
Ramsay's only job on that motion was to decide whether Burjoski's lawsuit met the legal threshold to go ahead. Judges are expected to stick to the questions before them and stay clear of issues another court is handling. Whether the board had the authority to stop Burjoski's presentation was not before Ramsay. It had already been argued in full before a three-judge panel of the Divisional Court, which had yet to issue its ruling. Ramsay waded into it anyway and pre-empted that ruling with his own conclusions.
Six days after Ramsay released his ruling, the Divisional Court found "the decision of the WRDSB to be reasonable." The court found Burjoski was given "more than one opportunity" to stick to the agenda topic, "but declined to do so even after she was reminded of its scope." The court also found it reasonable for the board to treat her words as derogatory and in violation of the meeting rules, and said she was free to make her points elsewhere. She was not free to take over the meeting's agenda to make them. Her request to appeal was dismissed.
On appeal of Ramsay's ruling, the Court of Appeal found that he had weighed only one side and called his analysis "skewed." The court also took issue with his language. In a ruling where he inappropriately went out of his way to judge how the board handled comments on trans issues, he referred to "transsexual persons," "transgenderism," and "the transgendered."
Friday's decision was about a Charter challenge by homeless people cleared out of Hamilton's parks. The Court of Appeal found multiple, serious errors and sent the case back to a different judge. Ramsay cast aside the testimony of every witness who said they'd been removed at night, mainly because all but one of the 14 people bringing the case have mental health or addiction issues. The court called that an error of law that perpetuates stereotypes about "some of the most vulnerable people in our society." He also never applied the required Charter tests established by the Supreme Court, included "irrelevant commentary" in his analysis, and tossed three volumes of evidence without properly considering whether they were admissible. All of this came in just 14 pages of reasons, released days after the hearing, for a case with 10,000 pages of evidence.
Piatkowski's time as board chair is fair game in this election. But you should weigh what the courts finally decided about that meeting, not one-liners from Ramsay that didn't hold up.
Decisions:
- Ramsay's ruling during the defamation case: 2023 ONSC 6528
- Divisional Court ruling on the WRDSB meeting: 2023 ONSC 6506
- Court of Appeal ruling during the defamation case: 2024 ONCA 811
- Court of Appeal ruling on the Hamilton encampments: 2026 ONCA 726
