Heights kids’ bday venues?
Hey, neighbors! I’ve lived in the Heights for about 15 years, and I was silly enough to have a kid in December, when Javits/Bennett bday parties are pretty no-go.
Kiddo is turning 6 and has decreed that this year she will not settle for the “special outing with a friend” thing we got away with last year.
We did her second and fourth birthdays at the Y on Nagle, but the price then was literally HALF of what it is now ($600+ now, with no added value). For her third, we did a party with the Artz space (used to be Little Red Rocket back in the day) on 181 and Riverside, but they closed.
I’m aware of the following places that might rent space and/or do birthday programs:
-YM/YWHA of Washington Heights
-the art studio on 187th/Pinehurst
-Mt. Sinai Jewish Center
-Hebrew Tabernacle
-Fort Washington Collegiate Church (up in the air now because of new management/owners)
-Le Cheile
-Dance Project of Washington Heights
-Hudson View Gardens community room
-Castle Village community room
(Anyone know if Cornerstone/Our Savior’s Atonement on Bennett rents space for this kind of thing?)
Anyone have additional suggestions? Ideally looking for a place that can host at least 20 kids, so at least 40-person capacity, and if you have any experience with getting kid-friendly entertainment (clowns, bounce houses, crafts, etc.) arranged in that space, I’d love your wisdom.

Journalist seeking info about Sherman Ave
Hi all! My name is Nimra and I'm a student journalist at CUNY's Craig Newmark Graduate School. I'm writing a story about the safety issues on Sherman Avenue, as the Department of Transportation is currently working on a safety plan for the area.
I would love to speak with some residents about Sherman, the issues they've seen and what they would like to see in DOT's plan. If you're interested, DM me or leave a comment here and I'll reach out. Thanks!

MISSING PUFFIN KEYCHAIN please help me find him!!
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for my puffin keychain, I unfortunately lost him around the Manhattan area, I can’t quite remember where exactly I last saw him so here is a run down of where I was that day (Monday 24)
\\-Columbia University campus + Teachers College Harlem
\\-Dahlia on 269 Columbus Ave
\\-MNN around Hudson Yards
Transport info: I was also on the QM5, 1 train, and 7 train that day.
Other places I think he might be around: QBCC Bayside, Queens area and Flushing NY on another day.
I’m not sure where exactly he might’ve been lost, but I just checked my room and asked friends to no avail.
I know he is a mere 3 inch keychain, but me and my partner have been claiming him to be our child for the past 2 years so loosing him has been a major loss, especially given we’re long distance and take turns with him and I lost him during my turn. I have been nonstop crying since I realized I had misplaced him.
He does not have the large library pin I took it off him a few days prior to the 24th. I would really appreciate it if you can share within your circles and family, if you know anyone who might’ve found a cool puffin or bird or “penguin” keychain pleaseee consider checking if it’s him.
His name is Banana, and he means so much to me. He is genuinely irreplaceable. He is like my emotional support puffin :(. Thank you all for your help, I’m really hoping the community comes through.

ISO Cane
Hi everyone, I've recently become disabled to the point of needing a (preferably collapsible) cane. Is there anyone with one to spare and that could possibly deliver to 157th and Broadway?

Express Dry Cleaner (Fer’s) on 158th street closing
I have been going to the Express Dry cleaner on 158th on and off for over 15 years. According to a Google search this place has been around since 2004. I unexpectedly got a call last Friday saying they’re closing and to come pick up all my stuff. They said today was their last day. I asked the guy at the front desk what was happening and he mentioned not enough revenue coming in, rising rent…. Anyone else have any details? Or recommendations for cleaners in the area? Super sad to be losing a neighborhood staple.

My big question about wheel stealing, what cars get their wheels stolen
So almost every day, I see cars on milk crate jacks, the wheels stolen. Are these victim cars always Honda or Toyota? I thought they were, are.
Recently, I was parking a dowdy old Volvo on Cabrini.
This guy on the sidewalk stopped walking and with arms crossed, watched me parallel parking, with an incredibly weird and hostile smile. Are one of the vehicles his and he thinks I'm gonna scratch his car? Do I know this person from somewhere? He was a white suburban dad type with white hair and the bad kind of aviator glasses, in his sixties or seventies, in a telling golf jacket. He was exuding smugness and superiority.
I stopped backing in and rolled down my window to ask, "Do you have something to say to me?" I am pretty fucking sick of mansplainers, men telling people how to park, convinced they have some special knowledge younger, POC, women don't have. Let's hear this!
He said, "You really shouldn't park here. There is a big problem here. Your wheels are going to get stolen. It's dangerous."
Me: "No, only Toyotas and Hondas' wheels get stolen, so I'm ok."
Him, agitated: "No, that's not true. Your wheels will get stolen. You shouldn't park here."
Me, annoyed: "Sir! I live here! If you pay attention, it's Toyotas and Hondas that are in trouble! You'll notice this, it's true, they're Toyotas and Hondas."
Him, losing it, throwing hands in the air, "ARRRRGGH! DON'T ARGUE WITH ME! I'M NOT HERE TO ARGUE WITH YOU!" Walking away, yelling, "DAMN! What the...."
Me (I should not have said this): "YOU'RE THE ONE WHO FUCKING PICKED A FIGHT WITH ME!!!"
So... is it true? Have you seen non-Toyotas, non-Hondas' wheels get stolen? What makes and models?

Fall beginner-friendly watercolor workshops in Washington Heights 🍂🎨 Early Bird ends Monday
Hi neighbors! We have two fall watercolor sessions coming up at Buunni Coffee in Washington Heights this week & early bird ends tomorrow at midnight!
🍂 Thursday, 5:30–6:30 PM — Watercolor Happy Hour (final session)
We’ll be painting a new fall-inspired scene with local artist Tamila Dubas. It’s just one hour, beginner-friendly, and all supplies are included. This will be our last Watercolor Happy Hour at Buunni this fall.

If you’d rather have more time to settle in and paint, we also have a longer 2-hour session coming up, with step-by-step guidance and all materials provided.
Early Bird pricing for both ends Monday at midnight.
Our Saturday painting & craft workshops at Buunni are continuing, and we’re also working on bringing LaLaLu workshops to some other Uptown spaces and trying out more artists, crafts and creative projects.
If you’ve been meaning to come paint with us, we’d love to have you! 🍁

Kids fall craft + mini pumpkin decorating this Saturday in Washington Heights 🎃
Hi neighbors! I’m organizing a small fall craft event for kids ages 4+ this Saturday at Buunni Coffee at Haven Plaza (W 168th St) and wanted to share here for local families. 🍂
Kids will decorate their own mini pumpkin with acrylic paint markers and fun craft accessories, plus make a tissue-paper leaf suncatcher and spooky-cute Halloween bookmark to take home.
We’re keeping the groups small with just 10 kids per session.
🎃 Saturday, Oct. 3
🍂 10–11 AM or 11 AM–12 PM
🎨 $25/child | 2+ kids are $20 each
☕ All materials + mini pumpkin included, and families get 15% off café purchases
A parent/caregiver stays onsite during the workshop.
This is part of the new kids programming I’m developing through Lalalu NYC, so I’m especially excited to get some neighborhood families together for this one!
More details/registration: https://lalalunyc.com/kids-workshops/
Hope to see some Uptown families there! 🎃
