EN - About the Venice entrance fee
Since some of you asked, this is a brief summary of the (in)famous Venice entry fee, it may answer to some of your questions. The town hall is still writing and refining details, so dates or rules may change in the upcoming months. More infos (in Italian): https://live.comune.venezia.it/it/2023/09/venezia-contributo-di-accesso-turisti-giornalieri-si-parte-dalla-primavera-2024-1
- September '23 update:
- In spring 2024 there will be a trial period of 30 days, no dates yet
- Ticket will be flat price €5 on selected days/hours. Expect it on weekends, long weekends and bank holidays peak hours
- Again, if you already pay the tourist tax to Venice municipality because you stay in a hotel, B&b etc, you are completely exempt from this entrance fee, nothing changes for you. The structure will register you - as it is now. The fee is thought to discourage daily visitors
- Some areas will be totally exempt from the fee, such as minor islands
Kick off is scheduled for 16 January 2023.Postponed to 2024The municipality plans to introduce the booking website this autumn- Meanwhile, as an intermediate step, the municipality already promotes booking in advance. It provides discounts on parking, selected museums, and public transport tickets, which has gone up (e.g.: watebuses tickets are 9,5€ if you buy them on the spot; road bus Venice-Airport is 10€).
- Similarly to air tickets, the fee will fluctuate between €3 and €10, based on demand and crowding forecasts. Different entrance hours may get you different prices within the same day. Some hours like late evening may not require any booking whatsoever.
- Cruise ships passengers pay a flat price, not decided yet.
- Passes are unlimited, so access is granted to anybody.
- Sometimes booking is still required, although it's free. The fee is designed to discourage daily travellers in high peak days. If you stay overnight in a REGISTERED structure (hotel, b&b, guesthouse, etc) in Venice municipality (which includes Mestre and other boroughs on the mainland), you won't pay anything because you will already pay the tourist tax.
- Some other free of charge scenarios (not all):
- children under 14;
- if you transit on Tronchetto, P.le Roma, or harbour only
- if you visit friends or relatives who live in Venice (they have to register you)
- Touristic coaches passengers
EDIT: just to be respectful, this is a simple FAQ or guide. The initial aim wasn’t to start a debate if the policy is fair or not. But if we want so, be polite or constructive, at least.

Venice for 48 hours
What is the best way to get ferry tickets when I will only need it twice? Likely once from the train station to hotel, and hotel to the airport.

Anyone have a spare ticket to the Grand River/ML Buch show
Going to be in the city for a week and trying desperately to see this show. If anyone has a spare ticket/knows where I can purchase one (it’s sold out on the biennale site), I’d be forever grateful. thank you.

In the 1490s almost every grain of pepper in Europe came through Venice on the gold road. In 1498 three Portuguese ships reached India on the red one — and the money started leaving. [OC map]
Made this while putting together an animated map explainer on how Venice lost the spice trade. The surprising part for me: Venice actually fought back and won the Alexandria route back by the 1560s — what finished it was the Dutch and English going round Africa in fleets after 1600. Sources: Lane 1940, O’Rourke & Williamson 2009, Braudel.

Titolo: Dove si beve il miglior caffè a Venezia?
Ciao a tutti!

Grazie in anticipo.

Recomendations for a weekend in venice
Traveling Friday - Sunday
Arrive 11pm Friday & fly back 9pm Sunday.
Looking for recomedations on what to do. Staying in San Marco.
I would like to go on a gondela, visit Burano and of course eat as much pasta as possible.
Does anyone have recomendations for gondelas and trips to Burano.
I plan on taking the boat to venice on arrival. Is that the best option or shall I look at other means of getting to the hotel?
Any other recomendations on what to see would be appriciated.

Very Smelly Bathroom
Salve! I have lived in 2 apartments in the Mestre region before moving into my current apartment (and I now have an 18 month contract). The smell in the current bathroom is unbearable. I have used drain clog remover, vinegar with baking soda and I'm now burning incense in the bathroom. It seems to be coming from either the toilet, bidet or the shower so I have just been treating all of them - the smell still doesn't go away. Any advice??? I moved here alone from the states and I don't feel comfortable with my new friends yet to ask them to come over and help me. HELP please

Best restaurant for a special occasion? Seafood allergy.
Hello!
I am eloping in Venice on December 12th, and I am so excited. We are eloping on San Giorgio, but we will be staying on main Venice for 2 nights. Our ceremony ends at 1:00 PM (13:00), so we'll have all evening to explore.
After the ceremony, my husband and I would like to go to a great restaurant. I have a very severe seafood allergy and understand seafood is the main cuisine in Venice. My husband and I love steak and all other meats, pastas, etc. I am an adventurous eater and will try anything as long as I'm not allergic to it.
No budget. Please send me some recommendations as I'd love to make reservations. I'll definitely call ahead as well to ensure the restaurant can accommodate the food allergy. Thank you! :)

Are beggars usually rude?
We were waiting at the Venice station when a beggar with a dog approached us and asked us for money. I’ve usually been warned off about scammers and pick pockets so i immediately said “No sorry”
The beggar gave me a death stare and called us “bitches” and passed by us. He returned again and called us “shits” while passing by us again.
Is this common? Or did we actually do wrong by not giving him money? How much does someone usually give a beggar?

Un piccolo ricordo di Venezia
Ciao a tutti!

Officina self service (Venezia)
Ciao a tutti. Cerco in affitto in provincia di Venezia (anche in Treviso) la fossa di ispezione (oppure ponte, o entrambi) per poter riparare la mia auto.
Sarei grato a chiunque potesse darmi qualche informazione in merito.

First Venice trip, 28–30 December 2026 - which hotel would you choose for a couple?
Hi everyone! My partner and I are visiting Venice for the first time from 28–30 December 2026, coming from Rome.
We’d love a central, walkable location with restaurants and cafés nearby, and a nice atmosphere for wandering in the evenings. Since we only have two nights, location and convenience are quite important to us.
We’ve been looking at the following hotels (quite a long list, so we’d really appreciate help narrowing it down!):
- All’Angelo Art Hotel
- Colombina Hotel
- Venezia Palazzo Barocci
- Hotel A La Commedia
- Ca’Pisani Hotel
- Carnival Palace
- H10 Palazzo Canova
- Avani Rio Novo Venice Hotel
- Hotel Canal Grande
- Palazzo Veneziano
- Hotel Antiche Figure
- Ai Mori d’Oriente Hotel
- Hotel Indigo Venice – Sant’Elena by IHG
- NH Collection Venezia Murano Villa
- The Venice Times Hotel, Vignette Collection by IHG
- Hyatt Centric Murano Venice
- Hotel Moresco
- Papadopoli Hotel Venezia – MGallery Collection
- Hotel Donà Palace
- Santa Croce Boutique Hotel
- Hotel Olimpia Venice, BW Signature Collection
Which would be your top two or three for a first visit, and why? If you’ve stayed at any, I’d love to hear about the rooms, service and surrounding area.
Also open to other hotel suggestions. Thanks in advance :)
