Book Discussion Official short stories & bonus material

I've seen a lot of people over the last few months ask for the links to the official short stories, so I thought I'd make a post with all of them linked. They are listed below in order of their occurrence in the fictional timeline.

Sunshine - Occuring ~20 years before the events of Vampire Academy, Sunshine is a short story about Eric and Rhea Dragomir meeting for the first time. This is a multi-chapter story from the Kisses From Hell novella. You can purchase Kisses From Hell here.

The Turn and The Flame - Set 8 or 9 years before Vampire Academy, The Turn and The Flame follows Tasha's experiences on the day Christian's parents turned Strigoi. It gives some important context regarding Tasha's place in royal Moroi society, explains why Tasha is so passionate about Moroi learning to defend themselves, delves into Tasha's first love, and shows Dimitri and Tasha's first meeting. There are cameos from Tatiana Ivashkov, Nathan Ivashkov, Janine Hathaway, Eric Dragomir. It was published as part of the Vampire Academy 10th Anniversary edition. You can purchase the Vampire Academy 10th Anniversary edition here.

From The Journal of Vasilisa Dragomir - Set over several months, this story covers Lissa's experiences with spirit and darkness following the death of her family, and the experiences of Lissa and Rose while on the run. Published in the Vampire Academy 10th Anniversary edition. You can purchase the Vampire Academy 10th Anniversary edition here.

Adrian's Diary #1 - Taking place during spring, the same year as Vampire Academy, this short excerpt from Adrian's diary gives insight into his experiences at college. Originally posted on Richelle Mead's blog. You can read Adrian's Diary #1 here.

The Meeting - Dimitri's POV of meeting Rose for the first time set during Vampire Academy. This was originally posted on Richelle Mead's blog, included in the Vampire Academy 10th Anniversary novel. You can purchase Vampire Academy 10th Anniversary edition here.

Adrian's Diary #2 - Taking place in November, just before the events of Frostbite. This short diary entry hints at Adrian's experiences with spirit, and gives some background context to various relationships in his life. You can read Adrian's Diary #2 here.

Hello, My Name Is Rose Hathaway - Set at St Vladimir's in late November, between the events of Vampire Academy and Frostbite. included in the Vampire Academy 10th Anniversary novel. You can purchase the Vampire Academy 10th Anniversary edition here.

Homecoming - Set only about a month of so after the end of Last Sacrifice, Rose and Dimitri return to Baia after his restoration, reunite with the Belikova women, and end up being sent on a mission to protect the local community. Originally from the novella Foretold: 14 Tales of Prophecy and Prediction. This is a short, multi-chapter story. You can purchase Foretold here.

Bloodlines: Adrian's Lost Chapter - The original first chapter of Bloodlines, this short story covers Adrian's feelings after the events of Last Sacrifice. It was originally posted on Richelle Mead's blog via Scribd. You can read Adrian's Lost Chapter here.

Happy Mother's Day from the Hathaway's - A short email correspondence between Rose and Janine on Mother's Day. It's not confirmed when this is set, but I deduce that it was after Rose has graduated. This is because her email address refers to her as "Roza". You can read Happy Mother's Day from the Hathaway's here.

Book Discussion Power rebranding in bloodlines Spoiler

Soo I just finished reading part 1 of bloodlines for the first time, even though I read the VA series numerous times before. And it's maybe just something I noticed, but it feels strange. Though I get why it's how it is.

So basically, in the VA, most moroi can't use their magic for anything too powerful, and when they do, even if well trained, they usually get really tired and weak afterwards. While compelling by spirit users seems to take way less, and seems to be useful at any moment.

Now, I noticed some power scaling inconsistencies in the spin off. At the end of VA which takes time roughly a month before Bloodlines, Adrien's healing capabilities are far weaker than Lissa's, and only able to heal minor things. Rose also mentions that he prob wouldn't be able to restore a strigoi. His compulsion seems to be somewhat less powerful too, but still, it's incredibly strong, with or without eye contact. Even when he drinks.

Yet in bloodlines we learn that Adrien's healing was powerful enough to ressurect Jill, which seems to be just as big of a feat if not more than healing a strigoi. How did he get so powerful in healing so fast? And while captured by Lee, his compulsion doesn't even make Lee think twice, which is strange because even without eye contact he should be able to have an effect on him, at least a little, especially since he was sober. Not to mention in the tattoo shop too, he could've compelled his way in, but he chose not to, and it didn't even seem to cross his mind, even though it could've helped enormously. Maybe because he didn't want Sydney to be scared? Not likely. Or it's just not his first instinct like how it is for Lissa? Basically, Adrien got considerably stronger at the start of the book while prob being intoxicated, yet weakened down by the end of it, way more than he ever was.

As for normal moroi, their magic seems amped. Jill could create an entire weapon out water and while it exploded some time after, she didn't seem all that tired afterward. And she's only 15, without the same amount of training Christian had, who still got tired often after fighting with fire, even if less so in the later books. In the first few, it was for sure difficult for him.

I know these differences in power limits and scaling are probably for the plot to develop, because they needed a powerful spirit in the absence of Lissa, yet not too powerful to get them out of everything, while also give a purpose to Jill and help the fight, it was still strange not to have any explanation about this.

What do y'all think?

Show/Book Discussion Successful Adaptation

I really think Vampire Academy could transition into tv or film but it always falls short. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the movie but since it was a box office failure they never continued the series.
But lately I’ve been thinking, couldn’t they make the show animated. I think an anime adaptation would be the best medium and most successful way for the books to be accurately portrayed but I’ve never seen anyone mention and just wondered if anyone else felt the same way??

Fan Art/Edit/Fics My only contribution to the VA fandom

Wow, I've believed the VA fandom has been dead for ages, I was surprised to find an active Reddit while doom scrolling. I found the book collection late and already as an adult, in 2014, but it became an obsession for a few years.

I quite enjoyed the comic version of the books and was gutted to learn only 3 had been made. Since I am not an artist, but I know my way around Photoshop quite well, I tried make more using the Sims 2 lol I started in 2015 and went into an ongoing hiatus before the end of chapter 6 of Blood Promise a few years back; editing was a lot of work, I tried to follow the aesthetics of the official comic. This was my only contribution to the fandom, thought to share *shrug*

You can check it all on its dedicated Tumblr

Book Discussion Unpopular Opinion: Bloodlines is better than Vampire Academy.

Post image

Richelle definitely found her footing with Bloodlines, it felt more polished and less flawed like Vampire Academy and Sydney and Adrian had a less problematic and more healthier dynamic that is easier to root for, especially these days.

I'm definitely in the minority (not the first nor the last time) but I definitely think Bloodlines is better than Vampire Academy. Still miss this series so much!

Question Graphic Audio

Can you imagine how awesome it would be?

I've been listening to mostly graphic audios these past few months and I've found them really enjoyable. There are even some books that I almost DNF'd while reading, but decided to try listening to the GA version first, and ended up enjoying simply because of the voice actors and sound effects

Does anybody know if there's a way to request a book/series to be picked up by graphic audio? I feel like vampire academy would do really well! I honestly wouldn't mind seeing hearing Khaya Fraites (as Rose) and Jessica Schly (as Lissa) work together again

Book Discussion Moroi History/Romanian Culture/Worldbuilding

Does anyone else wish we’d have gotten more worldbuilding?

I’m so curious about the history of the Moroi, and later the dhampirs and Strigoi!! I wish the books delved into how Romanian culture really influenced and was influenced by vampire culture.

For example, I thought about how the Moroi’s need for human blood would have realistically influenced their cuisine, melding with Romanian food to make new dishes and ways of consuming blood.

I’m writing a worldbuilding doc for my VA fanfic, but I know very little about Romanian history. I just saw that parts of what would become Romania were conquered by the Roman empire for a time. If Moroi are supposed to be unique to Romania, then I find it kind of hard to believe that they’d be conquered by the Romans (unless maybe Romans had witches on their side?). And I didn’t really want to go the alternate history route of making it so that Romania wasn’t conquered by the Romans, since the Roman-Thracian/Dacian and Slavic mix of cultures is cool to explore. Thoughts?

I read a bit about how the word “Strigoi” likely comes from the Greek “Strix” meaning a bird witch who fed on blood and human flesh. That kind of messed up the idea I have for the “first Strigoi”, since this info from folklore/mythology would translate to witches in VA being the first Strigoi. Thoughts?

Feel free to DM me if you want to chat!!

Question Looking for a specific Rose/Dimitri Cabin Divergence fanfic ("Choosing Us" by shadowkissed_dhampir?)

Hi everyone! I am trying to track down the exact link or archive for a specific Rose and Dimitri Vampire Academy fanfiction that I read a while ago.

I remember the author's name being shadowkissed (or shadow_kissed), and the title is likely "Choosing Us," but I'm having trouble finding the active link online.

Here are the specific plot points I remember:

The Setup: It is a Cabin Divergence story that starts and shows their night at the cabin in Shadow Kiss. The tragic book ending (Dimitri getting turned) never happens.

The Trials & Date: Rose goes to do part of her Guardian Trials in a desert setting. Alberta is supportive of their relationship. She even arranges for Dimitri to escort Rose between her trials, which allows them to sneak away for a date at an Italian restaurant. I think?

The Russia Trip: They end up travelling to Baia, Russia to see Dimitri's family.

Abe: abe, Janine, Lissa, Christian, Eddie, Adrian, Sydney, and I think Jill exist. They spend time in one of abes houses?

No Pregnancy: There is absolutely no pregnancy trope in this fic.

Does anyone have a direct link to this story, a PDF/EPUB copy, or know if the author went by a different name on FanFiction.net / AO3? Any help finding it would be amazing! Thank you!

Show/Book Discussion Sonya and Mikhail, What was the point? (Spoilers) Spoiler

Post image
27 Upvotes

What was the purpose of deviating from Sonya and Mikhail's story in the books?

Sonya's story was a forgone conclusion at first yet Mikhail still had hope for her, somehow. But the show kiIIed it completely by replacing Mason with Mikhail so even if they still followed Sonya's book route in Last Sacrifice, we never get their ending in Bloodlines.

Not to mention, as a shipper, why would you destroy a wonderful love story for nothing?

This is one of the biggest changes in the show that I think did more harm than good, honestly. And I'm still wondering what was the whole point of it.

Book Discussion Just finished a VA & Bloodlines re-read! Any questions? Spoiler

More accurately, I’ve re-read VA & Bloodlines 1-2 so I could read 3-6 for the first time! I had so much fun but the entire time l've been trying to express random things to my partner (he has said random things like ‘I’m a strigoi, wait or is it moroi?’ and feign attacking me) and it's great but not the same as someone who knows exactly what the heck I'm talking about lol so I’m glad l found this subreddit!

I read most of the books in early highschool and I always thought 'this s**ts all over twilight! Why aren't people talking about this? I mean vampires and elemental magic?? Rose would destroy Bella’ ahaha 12-14 years?? later relatively fresh off of re-reading hunger games and the infernal devices, I was craving such a specific kind of fiction and this just hit the sweet spot perfectly. I actually found an old songwriting book where a friend and I started writing a VA inspired song or two which was hilarious (I was probably 12, I also have an iconic Mortal Instruments song).

Back to this series, I've been wanting to just make a video or a mini project as a reflective exercise to encapsulate my experience through all this. What are your favourite questions you ask a friend who has just finished the series or a book in general? Does anyone have any reflective rituals for your own reading? 12 books is a long time to spend in one world, I’m feeling like this is a bittersweet little thing I’d like to do! Do you guys have any niche thoughts or curiosities? I think some comments could be fun to bounce off of 😊

Other random information! Some books I blitzed through, at other stages I had bigger gaps of breaks as I fluctuate between fiction and non-fiction books. I think I started reading late January?? I watched a movie ?? when it first came out for VA but I haven’t tried that again as I didn’t want to put pictures in my head for the characters. This is so silly but I always see Dimitri as Keanu Reeves / John Wick in my head 😂 and yes, the age gap of course is uh-oh and I agree he really didn’t have to be that old. At some points I also felt like the writing could completely change and then I’d get mad at the style or pacing and go into a spiral of ‘Richelle what’s going on? Wait did the editor change?’ and need a break or glare at the books at times ahah but I still see the value in them. I have experienced the full spectrum of emotion throughout all of this ahaha so much fun 🕺🏼✨

Looking forward to hearing any thoughts!

Show Discussion feeder clothing in the tv show

Hi all. I'm completely blind andn I watched the tv show using audio description. For those who don't know, audio description is an audio track that is added over the film or movie that is playing. In this track, a person describes what is happening on screen so a blind person can follow what's going on. The audio description, or DVS for short, can't change the movie in any way in terms of dialog. And yes, if a cuss word is spoken in a subtitle, the narrator has to say it out loud. In this case though, the person doing the audio description didn't do a good job. I've always wondered about what kind of clothing feeders wore. I'd imagine it to be something close to a uniform, like what somebody in an office might ware.

Meta My absolutely favorite thing that came from the tv show

Is that the actors still remain friends to this day. It's so common for movie or tv actors to play up friendship while promoting when in reality they were just co-workers and they dont interact anymore after that period is over. But I still follow a lot of main cast on Instagram and theyre still friends and will often hang out. It's so cute that the show brought them together. They all even attended weddings that happened in that friend group.

Every time I scroll through Instagram and I see pictures of them hanging out or their comments under each other's posts, it makes me smile. Weird post but I just love love and genuine friendships, lol
