On this day in 1970, Leonarda Cianciulli, 'The Soap-Maker Of Correggio' died. Cianciulli grew increasingly superstitious and put her energy into murdering and turning women into soap and baked goods in the 1940s, which she then gave to her neighbours and son to consume.

An assault victim poses for the camera – 1934. Chinatown, LA. From a collection of LAPD crime photographs dating from the 1920s to the 1970s discovered in 2014. I've linked to the rest in the comments. They're quite NSFW though.

Madison Avenue and 50th Street in Manhattan, New York City, photographed during the Great Blizzard of 1888.

The Great Blizzard struck from March 11 to 14, bringing between 10 and 58 inches (25 to 147 cm) of snow to parts of New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. Sustained winds of more than 45 mph (72 km/h) created enormous snowdrifts, some exceeding 50 feet (15 m) in height, while roads, railways and telegraph lines were severely disrupted, bringing transport and communications across much of the region to a standstill.

Also called the “Children’s Blizzard” or “Schoolhouse Blizzard” because so many children were caught in the snow and frozen to death on their way to school. The children who made it to school were generally kept in the school by the teachers until they could safely travel home- days later. The official death toll is around 230, but some say the actual number of deaths could be over 1,000. (This is people in general, not just children.)

In the 1920s and 1930s, sheep were routinely introduced into London parks to keep the grass under control and reduce mowing costs. Shepherds competed for the privilege of grazing their flocks on Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Clapham Common and other pastures around the city.

Vali Myers left Melbourne at 14, slept rough in post-war Paris and got thrown out of France for vagrancy. Then she spent nearly 50 years in a ravine above Positano with 100 animals and a pet fox, tattooed Patti Smith’s knee and asked Donovan for a goat as a performance fee.

In 1979, at Comiskey Park (home of the Chicago White Sox) an event called Disco Demolition Night took place. Fans could get in for 98c if they brought a disco record to be destroyed. A crate filled with disco records in center field was then blown up, which blew a hole in the grass.

Dolly Parton and husband Carl Dean hamming it up in a photo booth, c. late 1960s. The strip sat unseen in Carl’s old National Guard trunk until 2026, when it went on show at her Nashville museum.

The strip turned up with Dolly’s long-lost 1966 wedding dress and veil. Her niece Rebecca Seaver, who runs the Dolly Parton Archive, told Vogue that Dolly hadn’t seen it since it was taken. The couple met outside a laundromat in Nashville in 1964 and married in Ringgold, Georgia, on 30 May 1966.
