I'm Gen X. I grew up in the 1980s and partied in the 1990s. All of the cartoons and shows I grew up to were the foundations of pop culture today.
While there have been exceptions, like Transformers, in general (please note I said IN GENERAL before everyone leaps on it with examples of the exceptions and not the rule) most of the reboots to 80s IPs have not been successful.
I watch a lot of old cartoons on YouTube out of nostalgia. And it's so obvious that they were made for one reason: to sell toys.
Today, that isn't the market. Kids and young people don't really play with toys anymore. They are on their devices and play video games. They don't play, they consume. Thus, content today is not made to sell toys, it's to sell time. They are looking for your attention, not for you to buy physical toys.
That's why I think there's a huge disconnect between 1980s content and 2020s audiences. And it just doesn't work. Again, there are exceptions to every rule. But they are exceptions. And for that reason, I think most of those classic IPs should be left alone. We can revisit them on YouTube and other platforms any time we want, and view them the way they were meant to be seen.
And I think that's where they need to stay.
EDIT: To all of the comments saying "kIds sTiLl pLaY wItH tOysSs". Please look at paragraph #2, and then look at what's inside the parentheses. I am talking IN GENERAL. I'm painting in broad strokes because I am talking to a BROAD audience.
Do kids today still play with toys? Of course they do. But once again, because this is the internet, context and nuance completely go out the window. (And reading comprehension is abysmal.). The 80s and the early 90s were a different time.
You ever see those videos where people are walking by empty parks and basketball courts and lament about "kids don't play outside anymore. When I was a kid, we stayed outside until the street lights came on."
Of course some kids still play outside. But they are talking about a specific moment in time before the internet and before we were all glued to our devices.
Context. Look closely at the second definition.
