Discussion Update on Rules and Quality Control

Hi everyone, it's been a minute since the initial discussion post about quality control issues. Let's talk about it.

The general consensus seemed to be that our ideas on what to change were good, though there could be more resources to help beginners. We actually have a subreddit wiki that anyone can contribute to, as long as you have 500+ subreddit karma and your account is 30+ days old. We also have a list of todo items for the wiki to help users find somewhere to start.

Another concern was that the stricter enforcement of the defaults rule may stop people from using existing color schemes or themes at all. This is not the case -- the intention of the rule is to remove posts which have little effort or just use premade configs, like many macOS and Windows lookalikes. It's about the spirit, not the letter of the rule.

With this in mind, we intend to go through with these rule changes. If you still have any concerns, please reply or send a modmail! We're most concerned with the quality of our community and welcome discussion.

Discussion [AeroSpace] skyland — I turned my Mac into Hyprland (dwindle, bezier animations, groups, master, cyberpunk HUD)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've been working on Skyland, a Hyprland-inspired desktop experience for macOS.

It's a fork of AeroSpace — huge thanks to nikitabobko for the foundation — with the look and workflow of 43PR's Hyprland dotfiles.

The goal was to bring that Linux tiling WM feeling to my Mac, including animations, workspace transitions, groups, dynamic theming, and a cyberpunk HUD.

Projects

What's in the video?

  • Dwindle layout with smart split (the split direction follows the cursor) and togglesplit
  • Bezier animations — windows pop in, shrink and fade on close, and workspaces use slidefadevert transitions
  • Window groups with a tabs bar, similar to Hyprland's grouping workflow
  • Master layout per workspace, with the master window centered on ultrawide screens
  • Rounded corners, active/inactive opacity, and a gradient border around the focused window
  • 18 themes from 43PR, plus wallpaper-generated colors using Matugen; light or dark mode is selected based on wallpaper brightness
  • Cyberdeck HUD — a translucent, eye-implant-inspired app launcher and a unified messages panel for macOS notifications and script messages
  • Claude Code integration — a Hermes plugin notifies me when an agent finishes or needs input
  • Workspace overview with live thumbnails and drag-and-drop between workspaces
  • Shortcut cheat sheet and a settings window that edits the TOML configuration while preserving comments

Other features

  • Named scratchpads (for example, Spotify on its own shortcut)
  • Window rules
  • Alt + mouse to move or resize windows
  • A Hyprlock-inspired screensaver
  • Floating media widget with audio-reactive bars
  • SketchyBar integration

My setup

  • WM: Skyland (AeroSpace fork, Swift)
  • Bar: SketchyBar
  • Borders: JankyBorders
  • Terminal: Ghostty + Hack Nerd Font
  • Themes: 43PR palettes + Matugen
  • Wallpapers: 43PR's Wallhaven collections

Honest caveats

A few things are worth knowing before trying it:

  • Some features require partially disabling SIP. Window corners, opacity, animations, and keeping floating windows on top rely on a scripting addition injected into Dock, similar to yabai. This also requires the -arm64e_preview_abi boot argument. Without it, the core tiling features still work, but the window effects won't.
  • Blur is limited. It only works where an application implements it itself (Ghostty, for example). I explored system-wide blur, but that would require much deeper WindowServer hacking.
  • The lock screen is a screensaver, not a security boundary. macOS still handles password authentication.
  • It's a personal setup, currently running on Apple Silicon with macOS 15. Some paths are hard-coded, so contributions and fixes are very welcome.

I'm sharing this because I wanted a more Hyprland-like workflow on macOS, and figured others might enjoy it too.

I'd love to hear your feedback, suggestions, and ideas for what to improve next!

AeroThemePlasma with some modifications:

  • Themed and renamed Konsole to resemble the Windows 7 command prompt
  • Linux Explorer is a recreation of the Windows 7 Explorer as seen on the screenshot
  • Installed a plymouth theme that resembles the Windows 7 startup animations
  • Geckium + Aero UserChrome for Firefox
  • Modified fastfetch config to resemble the output of a Windows 7 install

Be advised, many distributions have now replaced SDDM with PLM. Meaning that you need to reinstall it again in order to utilize AeroThemePlasma's SDDM theme.

Discussion | Does anyone have any good-looking Motif themes?

Odd question, but... I'm looking for some Motif themes (well, stuff I can put in .Xdefaults) which makes it look decently modern and not like my eyeballs threw up on the screen.

Context: I recently got nerd sniped by the Motif toolkit, which is actually pretty damn good technically, let down by a cumbersome API and the afore-mentioned eyeball-throwing-up-ness. I'd like to put together some demos showing some decent-looking Motif apps, but this requires more artistic sense than I actually have. Does anyone have anything I can use?

Workflow [OC] minaw: a customizable X11 wallpaper setting with smooth transitions.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

minaw (pronounced /miˈnaʊ/ (mee-now)) is a program I wrote for controlling my wallpaper in X11 environments.

The main point of minaw is to be highly customizable letting the user override certain functions. It uses already existing tools for the heavy lifting, such as xwinwrap, nxsiv and your compositor for the fade effect and ImageMagick for image processing.

Some of the features are
- Fetch wallpapers from APOD or wallhaven.
- Add a fortune message.
- Choose wallpaper based on the time of the day.
- Avoid showing the same wallpaper in short succession.

The current biggest missing feature is multi-display support. I only have one display on my workstations, so I do not know how people generally want to manage their wallpapers in this case. If anyone has any suggestions, I would gladly read them!

The code is available on git. You can also get it from the AUR. I hope it is useful to someone out there!

(also sorry for my undercooked rice in the example video, I am not really good at this)
