PSA: start-of-semester logistics compilation

In anticipation of common Qs:

Fast track offers / worried about not meeting the guaranteed rank score

Dress code

What is the WTR course?

Back-to-back classes on timetable

  • Classes are 50 minutes in duration. They start at 5 minutes past the hour and finish 5 minutes before the hour, allowing 10 minutes changeover between classes for comfort breaks/snacks/travel. So please don't stress about back-to-back classes.
  • Classes between different campuses: this is especially common for biomed classes. Courses usually know about this and negotiate slightly earlier finish time / slightly later starting time to allow more time for inter-campus commute. If not, raise the issue with your course coordinator.

Finding rooms/class locations

  • The first 3 digits of a room number corresponds with the sector/building number; the final 3 digits indicate the floor and room number.
    • e.g. 405-422 would be building 405 (Engineering), Level 4, room (4)22.
    • Sector 1xx = Clock tower/General Library block
    • Sector 2xx = Business School block (inc. Owen G Glenn Building (OGGB), Arts/Education building)
    • Sector 3xx = Science block
    • Sector 4xx = Engineering block
    • Sector 5xx = Grafton Campus
    • Sector 7xx = [No longer applicable - old Tamaki Campus]
    • Sector 6xx = Upper Symonds St
    • Sector 8xx = Law school
    • Sector 9xx = Newmarket Campus

I built a site that puts every UoA event in one place (and course reviews too)

2nd year at UniMelb here. Info about uni is scattered everywhere, so every time I had to dig through a bunch of different sites, and Rate My Professors barely covers Australia and NZ. So I built this: auckland.talkwalll.com (also an app: TalkWall)

It’s collected 340+ events and 33,000+ reviews so far, rated course/professor on usefulness, difficulty and whether people would take it again. You can also filter events by your major or interests, so you only see the ones that matter to you.

It’s free, with no ads, and I made auto translate so international students can be part of the community as well.

Courses Japanese 130G or Chinese 100G for summer school

• Upvotes

Hey y'all, I am planning on doing summer school in 2027 and need some help deciding which language course to take! I am interested in both Japanese 130G and Chinese 100G :D However, I have little to no knowledge of the basics :'D (I am going to learn after exams finish to be more prepared for SS). I did read a few reviews online, but a lot of them are a bit older.

It'd be lovely if you guys could share your recent experiences with exams, lectures, and time management - whether you found it to be difficult or not! I'd love to hear your review.

Besides that, good luck with the exams!

Social For those students who successfully cheat and brag about it

can we admit that at least 30% of students cheat on online exams and face no consequences? What’s the point of going to college.I know it’s none of my business, and we’re not graded on a curve, but it still feels unfair.

STATS 201

How manageable is STATS 201 for someone that's not majoring in a numeracy heavy major? I did alright in STATS 220, but I'm aware the courses are pretty different.

BEd (tchg)

Alright I am at a loss on what to do with my life and am considering going and studying education to become a teacher either here or in Aus.

If anyone has done this degree or is currently doing this degree, what do/did you think? What is the work like? Is it miserable with the current state of the world?

Would love any advice! I think I’d be a good teacher but am worried it’ll be progressively more depressing with ai and attention spans and all that.

Thanks :)

Thoughts on moving? UoA vs Otago

Hi everyone!

I'm a bit stuck on what to do for uni and wanted to get some advice. I'm considering either engineering or dentistry and got an offer for HSFY at Otago, while at UoA I got a fast-track offer for Biomed but not Engineering.

The main thing is that I live in Auckland, so moving down to Otago would cost over $30k, whereas engineering at UoA would be much cheaper since I could stay at home. My parents are happy to cover the costs if I really want to go, but I'm still unsure since I don't have a huge passion for either option yet.

I'm also a bit worried about the engineering job market and pay, especially with AI becoming more common. I've heard dentistry has better job opportunities and that it's possible to earn over $100k after graduating, which is good for a fresh graduate in my opinion. The thing is, I've also heard HSFY is really competitive, and since I've mainly maintained Merit and Excellence grades throughout Year 12 onwards, I'm not sure how realistic getting into dentistry would be for me.

I guess I'm worried about spending so much to move to Otago and then not getting into dentistry, when I could've stayed in Auckland and done engineering instead.

Has anyone been in a similar situation or have any advice on what you'd do?

I'd really appreciate it :)

Entry requirement

Im a NCEA level 3 student and I currently failed my internal which is 5 credits worth, i might only have 77 credits in total for this year. I’ve calculated the rankscore with my 77 credits and its 197.
Do you guys think i can get into 2027 UOA BCom bachelor with this grade cus they have raised the bar 35 points higher this year for Bcom comparing to the rankscore from the past few years (165->200)
(I’ve met all the UE and other requirements i just dont think i will have enough 80 credits)

Can you stfu when you come to study spaces?

Genuinely, this is such a rant.

Ik we have been over this before , but people need to know not to come to library or Kate or other STUDY SPACES AND treat it like a PICNIC.

This is not a hangout place to chat loudly or talk with your friends. This is a university STUDY SPACE.

Been to the library/ Kate , and honestly feels like I’m in the student kitchen. People just eating and talking with friends ( nothing study uni related btw ) and it seems like some people can’t understand the difference ?

Study space = study , talk but be quite and respectful of others

Student kitchen = do whatever

not sure if i should borrow money through living costs

I got the Top Achievers scholarship and will obviously be living at a hall. Need some advice whether i should borrow money each week for living costs. My current take is to leave it at $0.00 and then see how my own money can stretch me (because I will want to use my own money to go out, buy things, etc). Then when money gets tight I can consider applying for living costs later in the year.

Obviously I have the 5k cash stipend from the scholarship but I would want to put it towards tuition ideally.

I accepted my offer to study in summer school and got the email confirmation as well. Just now I got another email weeks after the first one saying I declined my offer. Is this an admin issue? I never declined my offer

Looking For Musicians!!

Thumbnail drive.google.com
0 Upvotes

Hello, I am a music student looking for musicians to help with a project/create a band. I have got a rough recording of the song that I want people to add onto and use as an outline (not the final product). I'm looking for people who want to write their own parts. I'm mainly looking for a bassist, a drummer and a lead guitarist but if you have an idea that sounds cool, I would love to hear it. Email me at [basp671@aucklanduni.ac.nz](mailto:basp671@aucklanduni.ac.nz) or on Instagram @_nebag. Cheers (song's called Lust btw)

Transferring to VUW for law

Hi I am currently studying Law Part I at UOA and wanted to transfer to Victoria. I was wondering what my chances of getting into part II would be and if the law courses from uoa will be treated the same as VUW law courses. I currently have a gpa of 6.0 b+ in first sem and am expected to finish second sem with a gpa of 7.0 A-. What would my chances of getting accepted be? And does anyone who has transferred have any experiences or advice? Thanks

Where has your degree/s taken you?

Hi everyone!! Going into Uni next year, and just overall curious about where your degree/s have taken you. I've read so much about how certain majors did really bad for ppl, e.g medicinal chem, pharmacology. I'm wanting to know about people's experiences, from health related degrees or not.

I've also gathered that some individuals regretted planning so far ahead because they ended up doing different things, or found out what they were studying didn't even give them the best chance of having the career they actually wanted.

Open to hearing any and everything about this!
