If you've tried using Conky on modern Ubuntu (especially under Wayland or with an NVIDIA GPU), you’ve probably hit a wall: the official Ubuntu repositories still ship with the older Conky 1.22.x, which struggles on Wayland, lacks modern rendering fixes, and requires hacky external scripts just to read GPU metrics.
I've been working on modernizing the entire Conky experience for Ubuntu, and I'd like to share Conky NextGen (v1.1.0) along with a prebuilt Conky 1.25.x engine and a dedicated GNOME Wayland extension!
Ready out of the box, but built like LEGO
The philosophy behind NextGen is simple: instant usability with infinite customization.
- Ready out of the box: You don't need to spend hours configuring files. Run
conky-nextgen start default and you instantly have a cohesive, polished dark dashboard with system metrics, weather, audio, and network monitoring.
- Modular architecture: Every widget is completely independent. Under the hood, NextGen provides reusable building blocks (Lua Cairo renderers for smooth bars, rings, spectrum visualizers, icons, and text) and unified data accessors. You can easily snap modules together, tweak colors and sizes, mix and match components, or build your own completely custom widgets from scratch—either in the clean Lua configs or via the visual GTK3 editor!
Why this is different from stock Ubuntu Conky
- Conky 1.25 vs Ubuntu Repo 1.22
The stock package in Ubuntu is stuck on 1.22. We provide a prebuilt .deb package of conky-mng 1.25.2, compiled with:
- Modern Lua 5.4 and Cairo bindings
- Up-to-date Wayland drawing stability and zero-flicker double buffering
- Native GNOME Shell Wayland Integration (conky-layer)
Under GNOME Shell on Wayland, the compositor (Mutter) lacks the wlr-layer-shell protocol. As a result, vanilla Conky floats, clutters Alt+Tab, shows up in the Activities Overview, and raises over app windows when clicked.
To fix this, we developed conky-layer to pin Conky properly to the desktop layer on GNOME Shell [molnari811023/conky-layer]. Additionally, native NVIDIA NVML GPU monitoring tracks core and memory clocks, VRAM, and temperatures without high CPU overhead.
Included Features and Modules
NextGen includes 20 independent modules covering system dashboards, audio/media suites with cava visualizers, network/weather integration, a built-in GTK3 visual designer (nextgen-designer), and a CLI manager (conky-nextgen).
Installation
Prebuilt .deb packages are available for Ubuntu 26.04, allowing users to install the engine and framework without manual compilation [molnari811023/conky-nextgen]:
bash
git clone git@github.com:molnari811023/conky-nextgen.git ~/.conky
cd ~/.conky
sudo dpkg -i pkg/conky-mng_1.25.2.r7.g6628aff-1_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i pkg/conky-nextgen_1.1.0.r166.gab54e73-1_all.deb
sudo apt install -f
conky-nextgen fetch all
conky-nextgen start default
Use code with caution.
