Hey everyone!
I'm currently a freshman studying Mechanical Engineering at VCU, and I'm planning to apply to transfer to UVA Engineering for Fall 2027, hopefully majoring in Civil Engineering.
I've been trying to make sure I'm taking all the right prerequisites, but I'm a little confused about how UVA evaluates AP credits and courses from other universities.
Here's my current situation:
Fall 2026 (Currently Taking):
- VCU MATH 307 – Multivariable Calculus (VCCS MTH 265 equivalent)
- VCU PHYS 207 + PHYZ 207 – Calculus-based Physics I with Lab (VCCS PHY 241 equivalent)
- VCU HONR 230 – Introduction to Academic Writing
- Brightpoint CSC 221 – Introduction to Problem Solving and Programming
- Other VCU engineering courses
Spring 2027 (Planned):
- VCU MATH 301 – Differential Equations (VCCS MTH 267 equivalent)
- VCU CHEM 101 + CHEZ 101 – General Chemistry I with Lab (VCCS CHM 111 equivalent)
- Brightpoint PHY 242 – Calculus-based Physics II with an in-person lab
- VCU UNIV 200 – Advanced Focused Inquiry
- VCU EGMN 102 – Statics
- VCU EGMN 204 – Thermodynamics
- Other VCU engineering courses
My biggest concern is Calculus II.
I got a 4 on AP Calculus BC, and VCU awarded me credit for both Calculus I (MATH 200) and Calculus II (MATH 201).
However, I'm unsure whether UVA Engineering will recognize those credits since they're AP-based rather than courses I physically took at VCU.
If I earn strong grades in Multivariable Calculus and Differential Equations, will UVA consider my Calculus II prerequisite satisfied, or does it strictly depend on how they evaluate my AP score?
I also have a few other questions:
- Does Brightpoint's CSC 221 satisfy UVA Engineering's introductory programming requirement by itself, or would I need CSC 222?
- Would VCU HONR 230 + UNIV 200 satisfy UVA's English composition requirement?
- Has anyone transferred VCU PHYS 207/PHYZ 207 or CHEM 101/CHEZ 101 into UVA Engineering? Were they accepted without issues?
- Do UVA Engineering transfers need to complete ENGR 1010/1020 before transferring, or can those requirements be substituted or completed afterward?
- If I transfer in Fall 2027, is graduating in Spring 2029 realistic for Civil Engineering?
I've already contacted UVA Engineering, but they directed me to Undergraduate Admissions for external transfer questions. I'm planning to reach out to Admissions as well.
I'm mainly looking for advice from anyone who has transferred from VCU, another four-year university, or a Virginia community college into UVA Engineering.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
